Farmhouse near Matha, Charente Maritime, Poitou Charentes, France - Countryside Location, Walled Garden
About Chris Plews
My name is Chris Plews and I live and work in Oxfordshire. I am the FD of a company in Witney but enjoy visiting France whenever I can with my family.
Chris Plews purchased this Farmhouse in 2002
Why Chris Plews chose Gibourne
We bought in Charente-Maritime following several years of family holidays in the area. As well as enjoying the French language and culture we found the area to be unspoilt and combining the best of the countryside with easy access to beaches. When our children were small, the region was within half a day's drive from the ferries yet far enough south to get better weather.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Having owned one half of the house for ten years, we purchased the rest when it became available in 2012. Since the it has been extensively renovated and modernised including the installation of a private heated swimming pool in 2014.

Amazing accommodation, amazing location
Extremely well presented, beautiful house in Gibourne. Well equipped kitchen with almost everything you need to cook and bake, lovely homely feeling comfy living room, 4 bedrooms with comfy beds, 2 en-suites, 2 further bathrooms, loads of outdoor seating, barbecue, use of table tennis table , use of loads of bikes, the list is endless, brilliant value for money but the icing on the cake, it has a private heated swimming pool. Can’t recommend this place enough, would definitely go again.
Home from home-great place to stay
We had a great holiday -the house is lovely and feels like 'home from home ' it has all you need and more to have an enjoyable holiday. It is well equipped with very comfortable beds.
Outside there is a lovely heated pool and plenty of place to relax in plus there is a BBQ and eating area too. The village is quiet and very well placed to explore the local area.
We would highly recommend
We’re so pleased you had a good holiday. Thank you for your lovely review.

Super Séjour en Charente Maritime - Repos - Visites - Soleil - Mer
Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Plews for their vacation home. The pool was very popular with the whole family. The house is very large and lovely decorated. The place is very quiet and we enjoyed the breakfasts in the morning and dinners at night outside.
Thanks also to M and Mrs Keys for their welcome, their advice and their availability.
Our vacation was great. The main centers of interest are 1 hour driving from the rental (La Rochelle, Ile d'Oleron, Royan, La Palmyre, Marais Poitevin, Angouleme, Rochefort).
We strongly recommend this rental for a nice holiday in this region. Many thanks.
There are a range of beaches including Fouras (45mins), Royan (1hr), Ile de Re (1hr 15mins). All times are by car.
The nearest ferry ports are St Malo (4.5hrs), Caen (5hrs), and Cherbourg (5.5hrs). Calais is approx 8hrs drive so an overnight stop is recommended.
The house is about an hour from La Rochelle airport, 1hr 20 mins from Poitiers and Bordeaux 2hrs.
The use of a car is essential.
Matha 5km, Aulnay 10km, St Jean D'Angeley 20km, Cognac 30km, Saintes 30km.
This is a region which is known as 'Entre terre et mer' as it encompasses both the delights of the French rural countryside and the Atlantic coast. There are numerous resorts along the coast which cater to the taste of all from the cosmopolitan La Rochelle and Ile de Re to Fouras, Palais sur Mer and Royan. There are many markets and spectacles during June to September but particularly in July and August and a visit to the local Tourist Information will fill you in on that season's events.Inland you have the delights of Saintes, St Jean d'Angely and Cognac. In addition there are the historic towns of Roquefort and Brouage. Each town, and many of the villages, have festivals during the summer season and Cognac has festivals dedicated to jazz, performing arts and, of course, cognac! There are municipal parks and 'Plan d'eau' for younger children and the pleasure boats at Saint Savinien are a must for the under 10 years. There is a local shop 2km away at Loire-sur-nie. Food shopping can be done at Aulnay, Matha and at any of the big supermarkets and markets at Saintes and St Jean d'Angeley. All of these have lovely weekly markets. For bigger items of shopping and clothes there is Angouleme and Bordeaux, the latter being a launchpad for visiting the wine chateaux of the Medoc. The nearest bars and restaurants are at Nere, Matha, and Aulnay.
