Apple Loft Cottage,a converted stone barn is situated down a quiet single track lane just one mile from Buckfastleigh. Set within four acres of land in a valley with the river Dart running along the back of the property, it is surrounded by rolling Devon farmland and is just minutes from Dartmoor National Park.

Apple Loft Cottage, whilst attached to the owners B&B, is very private and has its own patio area but with the added benefit of the 4 acre grounds around it. The cottage consists of a lounge/dining area with an oak beamed ceiling and three windows looking out to the patio area and gardens. The kitchen leads off of the lounge and is well equipped with everything you need to rustle up a delicious meal. The downstairs shower room, whilst compact, is of a contemporary style with shower cubicle and power shower and a wash bowl mounted on a shaker style cabinet. The characterful bedroom is located upstairs under another beamed ceiling with windows on both sides. The cottage is furnished with flair and is of a very high standard and is a mix of antique and contemporary furniture. There is off-road parking for one car in front of the cottage.

The cottage is one mile from the centre of Buckfastleigh which is an easy 10 minuted stroll to the high street. Buckfastleigh has a good selection of amenities including a supermarket that is open daily early to late, a farm shop selling local produce, several pubs, a great family run restaurant, a coffee shop and a traditional tearoom. Locally there are several other farm shops selling high quality local produce including Dean Court Farm shop and Riverford Organics.

There are many great places to eat out within the local area - including the Bakers Oven in Buckfastleigh, The Riverford Field Kitchen, The Cott Inn at Dartington, The Church House Inn at Rattery to name just a few.

Some of the attractions close to the cottage include Buckfast Abbey, the South Devon Railway, the Butterfly farm and otter sanctuary, Riverford Field Kitchen and The Ashburton Cookery School. The Elizabethan town of Totnes is just 6 miles away, and the coastal towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe just 45 minutes by car.

About Julia Blundell

We are Julia & Martin and we moved to Devon from Wiltshire in 2006 to renovate & run a B&B "Kilbury Manor" a former farm house dating from early 1700. Julia previously worked in banking and Martin still works in the electronics industry.

Having completed renovations on the house and barn, in 2009 we decided to run Apple Loft Cottage as a holiday let. We have enjoyed receiving guests throughout the year ever since.

We have two delightful dogs - Buster and Dillon who make sure we get out and about daily. We love the area - it is simply beautiful at any time of the year. It is very green and lush. The pace of life is slower and the people, very friendly. Even in the height of summer, you can find somewhere quiet to walk but the area really is stunning all year round.

We had spent many holidays in Devon, so it was a natural choice for us to move here. It is a most beautiful area with so much to see and do. Dartmoor National Park is simply stunning with acres of moorland, rivers and woodland. It offers peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Then there are the historic towns to visit - Totnes, Ashburton and Dartmouth offer unique shops, galleries and restaurants. Within 45 minutes by car you will find the beautiful coastal resorts of the South Hams - Salcombe, Bantham & Bigbury to the south, Teignmouth & Shaldon to the east.

The pace of life is really so much more relaxed here and the countryside is just stunning at any time of year.

What makes this cottage unique

Apple Loft Cottage is located down a quiet lane, a mile from the centre of Buckfastleigh. Set in four acres of gardens and grounds, with the River Dart and South Devon Railway running behind the property, it offers peace and tranquility. Whilst attached to the house, the cottage is very private with its own front door, walled patio area and car parking space. We will not intrude on your stay but are here to offer assistance if needed. We can also ensure that the cottage is maintained to a high standard for each stay.

The location of the cottage is ideal to explore the South Devon countryside with the moors, coast, towns and cities all within easy travelling distance.

Notes on accommodation: There is free WiFi in the cottage, TV & DVD player. The cottage is heated by gas central heating, with radiators in all rooms. In addition, in the lounge there is an electric wood burner effect stove which quickly heats up the room on chillier evenings. There is insufficient space for a travel cot or fold-up bed, so the maximum number of guests allowed in the cottage is two, with a minimum age of eight if a child is included in the couple. There is a strict no smoking policy and pets are not allowed. Outside: Parking for the cottage is right outside the cottage on a cobbled area by the front door. To the side of the cottage, there is a patio area enclosed by a stone wall with garden table and chairs. This looks down towards a pond and the orchard beyond. The main house sits in about 4 acres of grounds, and guests are welcome to use the main garden belonging to the B&B which consists of a large lawned area with sun loungers and seats, flowers beds, trees and shrubs. You can walk down to the river from the meadow behind the house. The gardens are quiet and relaxing, with water running down a rill in to the pond. To the back of the house, the South Devon Railway (a tourist attraction) runs from April to October, with steam trains tooting as they pass. Utility Room: There is no utility room but should guests require any items to be laundered, we are happy to do this usually free of charge. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Quality towels and bed linen are provided, together with bathrobes. These are changed once a week and the cottage is also cleaned on a weekly basis.

Perfect Weekend Getaway

A wonderful welcome from Martin and Julia began our lovely weekend, they showed us all the facilities of the cottage and offered up a few recommendations for food as we had a long journey. The cottage was spotless, everything was there to make us feel at home and the interior was stunning, we absolutely loved it! The bedroom was also gorgeous and the bed itself superbly comfortable. In the morning we were invited to breakfast at one of a range of times,whichever suited our needs which was great as It meant we could really spend our time as we liked due to the flexibility. The assorted breakfast menu was delightful, we tried something new every morning from the cooked breakfast options and the continental spread was wonderful. Our hosts offered us local knowledge of beaches and cultural spots, allowing to plan our day more! They were delightful throughout and were more than happy to answer any questions we had. The whole stay was absolutely perfect! We left feeling totally refreshed and can't wait to visit again!

My husband and I spend a week in this lovely cottage. It was everything we could have hoped for and more. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed to feel at home. It was warm, cozy, comfortable. Julia and her husband are wonderful hosts and made us feel welcome immediately and helped us with our plans both before and during our visit. The location is perfect for exploring the beautiful towns of Devon and Dartmoor. We hope to return someday. Just wonderful!

Our wonderful September week at Apple Loft Cottage

We arrived on 17th Sept. in the afternoon to a warm welcome from Julia, who gave us a tour of the cottage and its facilities. The cottage is charming, tastefully furnished and spotlessly clean. You can park your car right outside your front door! For a couple on a break it makes a great place to stay, and time is your own, unlike B&B where you have to fit in with breakfast times. It is a very relaxing place and luckily we were blessed with lovely weather the whole week.

We did so much in the week that we were there, we had to write it all down whilst in the pub on the Friday evening before we left for home on Saturday 24th. We had three pub visits to Buckfastleigh (BFL) which is within walking distance, all to the same Pub (The Globe) as I couldn't resist the Jail Ale! Also two superb meals in The Bakers Oven.

Excursions included Plymouth Hoe and a trip up to the top of Smeaton's Tower (the old Eddystone Lighthouse), two riverside walks, one from Fingle Bridge and one from Ivybridge, The Otter and Butterfly farm is really good (remember to wipe your misted-up camera lens) which again you can walk to, which is by the side of BFL Station where you can get the Steam Train to Totnes.

We also went to Buckfast Abbey (very nice cafeteria) and had a great time in Dartmouth, with a posh lunch in The Royal Castle Hotel - glorious sunshine on the day!

All in all a great week. Apple Loft Cottage makes a great base and is comfortable and warm. Julia and Martin make great hosts and become good friends over the course of the week. Nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for a great stay. Very highly recommended. Mick and Lorna Ponsford, Portsmouth.

cute, idyllic and really recreative

Nearly "last minute" I decided to travel to south-west England from Germany. On the internet I found that really cute Apple Loft Cottage and thought that this would be the place for me. And it was, indeed! The cottage was just like on the pictures on the internet and is located in such a beautiful landscape with a very nice and well-trimmed garden around it. Everything is looked after, clean und well-maintained - you really feel that Julia and Martin care for it and for their guests. All these cute details in and around the cottage!

We had nice contact via email before my arrival and I felt very comfortable and well taken care of.

Settled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, you can do lots of things there. I was hiking at Dartmoor, sight seeing at Exeter, Plymouth, Lost Gardens of Haligan, seaside, and one day even took a trip to Land´s End. So it´s really central ;-) I also stayed two days just in the cottage to relax. There´s a separated terrace with chairs and a table.

I sure would (and already have) recommend Apple Loft Cottage and want to say thanks again to Julia and Martin, who did everything to let me keep my trip in best memory! Thanks a lot! Hope to come back for another tremendous time in Apple Loft Cottage!

Well located, clean with comfy bed and well equipped kitchen.

Our stay was very pleasant, although we were surprised on our arrival to find a message on the door

to say that the owners had gone away, leaving a local phone number for emergencies. When they returned

from their trip, no attempt was made to communicate with us, even though they lived next door. The owner

spoke briefly to my wife outside, to ask her to move the car, as four other guests were arriving on the Saturday,

and that was all. This did not make us feel especially welcome as paying guests. The final indignity was that their dog messed right outside the door of our cottage, close to our car, on the morning we left, which was unfortunately trodden in.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that you felt so unwelcome when you stayed at the cottage in October. We tried to contact you prior to your arrival by e-mail and phone but had no response, hence the only way to communicate with you was to leave a message in the cottage. We even communicated with you whilst away as we wanted to ensure everything was satisfactory. We only returned a day before you left and Martin did speak with you other than to ask for the car to be moved. Most cottages do not have the owner right next door and we do try to respect guests privacy and perhaps if we had been able to speak directly with you before your arrival you may not have felt so neglected. This was not a deliberate act and we are sorry that it affected your stay. I am disappointed to have received such a low score when you say that you enjoyed your stay and that it was our lack of interest that you found unsatisfactory. Obviously we are really sorry that one of the dogs left a mess right outside cottage but this must have happened last thing at night as we always clean up right away.

Apple Loft Cottage

This was the second time we have stayed at Apple Loft Cottage and we hope to visit again soon. The property offers excellent accommodation for two people and is well equipped,well furnished, very clean and maintained to a high standard. The cottage is well located for visiting and spending time on Dartmoor. The owners, Julia and Martin live at the Manor House, to which the cottage is attached and run a a Bed & Breakfast business. They maintain a very high standard of customer service. We would highly recommend this property, without hesitation.

The coastal areas of the South Hams are a 40 minute drive from the cottage. These include the picturesque towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth, taking in the unspoilt beaches of Bantham and Bigbury. Going east, the seaside resorts of Teignmouth and Shaldon are about 45 minutes away. The nearest beach can be found at Broadsands, offering a small sandy beach and good headland walks to the fishing town of Brixham.


The nearest railway station is Totnes (6 miles away) where a bus or taxi can be taken. Exeter airport is the nearest airport at 24 miles away. A car is highly recommended for a weeks stay at the cottage as most of Dartmoor is not accessible by public transport. Plymouth has a ferry port and is 23 miles from Buckfastleigh.

Changeover Day:
Our change over day is Saturday. We try to be flexible with shorter breaks but would prefer the stay to start or finish on a Saturday if at all possible.
