Sarah and I have been farming here for 18 years. A Dorset man, I have taught in local secondary schools for 30 years , retiring to concentrate on the farm and our holiday business 10 years ago , somehow finding time for sailing , motorsport , countryside pursuits and conservation , and travel as well.
Sarah started, and continues to run our sheep flock that she established 30 years ago alongside her passion for riding and competing Western Style , tango and art.
We have 2 grown up children , 2 horses, 5 dogs , 1 pig (Trinny) , 7 chickens and up to 400 sheep on the farm .
We both love sharing this beautiful part of Dorset with our visitors .
David and Sarah Solly purchased this barn in 1997
Needing to increase the size of our previous farm , and to have a house with the land we were incredibly lucky to find Fern Down in a beautiful part of Dorset. Close to the Jurassic coast, and within easy reach of Bridport , a lovely market town of Broadchuch fame, we enjoy peace, tranquility and night time darkness at the end of our 1km farm drive . We are a low input sheep farm so there is very little machinery activity to disturb you. We take pride in encouraging wildlife and improving the ecological balance of our small , yet geologically diverse farm.
Special interest holidays:
Unwind in the peaceful surroundings of wide open spaces and long distance rural views. Join us in an environment where children can play in 132 acres of grassland, woodland and streams.
If you want a bit more activity, why not see what's happening on our working farm? David ( a retired teacher) and Sarah love people to get involved .
Beautiful beaches of the Dorset World Heritage Jurassic coastline, amazing sea views and lots of other attractions are a short drive from the farm.
Bridport with West Bay, our local town of TV fame, has much of interest - markets, restaurants, live music , junk shops galore and a great feel about it.
