Comfortable accommodation in French countryside on permaculture smallholding.

Bedrooms 1
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Newly converted barn in St Maden, near Dinan, Cotes D'Armor, Brittany - Calm and peaceful with private garden, short walk to village, exclusive access to private woodland.

We have recently completed the renovation of a cob and stone barn into comfortable accommodation for two, using original techniques and materials sympathetic to the original building, such as earth plaster, locally made kitchen tiles and solid wood floors. For the best night’s sleep, the orthopaedic, pocket-sprung, zip link bed can be configured as a king-size or two singles. A Jøtul stove will keep you cosy, all the logs you need are supplied for free from our 11 acre woodland, to which you will have exclusive access. Guests can wander around our 3-acre smallholding with its free-range chickens, runner ducks in the veg patch, small flock of Breton sheep, bee hives and, during the summer, a pair of pigs. Our produce is available to buy, for example, fresh eggs, homemade sausages, freshly-picked salads. We offer short courses: sausage-making and handmade soap being the most popular. We’re just a short walk from the village with its bar and shop. Please note that the cottage is not suitable for children or pets, and smoking is not permitted inside the gite.

About Gabrielle Anderson

We met in Brighton and moved to Brittany, buying our house in 2006. We’ve made great efforts to learn French and integrate into our local community, making good friends along the way.

Ex-townies, we’ve had lots to learn as we establish our permaculture smallholding growing herbs, vegetables, fruit and nuts, variously accompanied by chickens, ducks, rabbits, sheep, pigs during the summer and, more recently, bees. In the winter months, we work in our 11 acres of woodland.

We enjoy running the holiday cottage and have recently finished converting the barn into another comfortable gite for two which is separate from the cottage and will have its own private garden.

We're always happy to stop work and chat; that said, we'll leave you to enjoy the privacy of your own gite and garden.

Very comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time for us staying in a Gite (usually stay in a mobile home when doing self catering) and didn't know what to expect. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole holiday.

The Gite was very comfortable and had everything you needed. The location was ideal for touring and the garden was a great place to relax if you didn't go out. Gabrielle and Stuart are excellent hosts. Their homemade sausages are superb. Wished we'd bought more!!

We certainly recommend a stay and would go back again.Thank you for everything.

Perfect Christmas get away

We really enjoyed our stay at Stuart and Gabrielle's gite. It was warm and cosy and the big double bed is very comfortable. Stuart and Gabrielle made us feel very welcome and their farm is lovely. A very easy place to relax and feel at home.

Wonderful Accommodation in the French Countryside

  • 5 of 5

Gabrielle and Stuart are very thoughtful, welcoming hosts, and their renovated barn is extremely comfortable. Situated in a peaceful, quiet location not far from Dinan, the barn is one of the most beautifully designed and finished homes I have ever stayed in; warm and cosy, light and airy, and equipped with everything you could need. Truly a home away from home. Stuart and Gabrielle have done and are doing remarkable things on their shareholding and I was delighted to learn from them. Look forward to returning soon!

enjoyable week in france

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week in September 2015. Our hosts, Gabrielle and Stuart, were very welcoming and knowledgeable regarding the 'French' way of life.

The Barn had been beautifully converted and was an absolute joy to stay in.

We took them up on the offer of making our own sausages which were lovely.

We would recommend the barn to any couple wanting a quite stay in the French countryside.

A thoroughly relaxing week!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a fantastic week in this beautifully converted and very comfortable barn in a wonderfully, peaceful area within reach of some lovely towns and beaches.

Having decided to fly rather than drive, we booked a hire car; unfortunately, due to our own fault, there was an issue with the booking and we were left stranded at the airport some 40 minutes away from the accommodation. Thankfully, Gabrielle and Stuart very kindly came to our rescue and saved the day (nay, week!) Fortunately we were able to sort a car out quite quickly, which is definitely needed in this rural area.

As mentioned before, the barn is very comfortable (particularly the bed!) and had all the facilities one might need to self-cater. There was also a lovely arbour in the garden which we sat in of an evening. I sampled some of Gabrielle’s home-made sausages, which were delicious, sadly we didn’t get to try the pesto as we over-ate every day and couldn’t fit in anymore, come evening!

I’d highly recommend the cliff top walk around Cap d’Erquy which brings you to a beautiful beach. Saint Malo and Rennes are wonderful towns, but for me, Dinan was the most picturesque of them all. You feel like you’ve been transported to either medieval France or Diagon Alley (Harry Potter fans will appreciate the latter!)

All in all, a splendid week was had. Many thanks again to both Gabrielle and Stuart :)
