About the property

Cottage in Torchamp, Nr. Domfront, Orne, Normandy, France - Deep In The Normandy Countryside On A Quiet Lane With Easy Access To Local Amenities

"10% discount for 2 people booking a week or more"

Absolutely stunning "Chocolate Box" property rated 4 star by 'Normandie Qualitie Tourism'.

Le Cottage Normand is a beautiful, traditional Colombage cottage. It is believed to date back to the late 17th Century with later additions made in the 18th Century.

The property has been sympathetically restored to a high standard by the current owners who believe that guests will love it as much as they do. Both cosy and comfortable the combination of traditional Normandy charm and the convenience of 21st century living make this a fantastic place to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of modern living.

The ground floor comprises a spacious, comfortable lounge, kitchen/dining room, cloakroom, toilet and utility room. The original goat barn has been converted into a snug that is accessed from the lounge and ideal for even quieter moments!

The first floor is accessed from the lounge and has three bedrooms. The master bedroom has a bath and en-suite WC and washbasin.

There is a separate shower room and 2 further bedrooms.

Le Cottage Normand is ideal for families who seek peace and quiet in a calm, rural setting or perhaps even a romantic location for a honeymoon couple!

It is ‘far from the madding crowd’ but provides an excellent base to visit the many attractions of the region. The village of Torchamp is 8 minutes away where there is a small shop and Bar and Restaurant. In the opposite direction, the beautiful medieval town of Domfront is a 7-minute drive. Here you will find supermarkets, chemists, restaurants and hairdressers but the real joy is the history. The castle (with dungeons!) is linked to William the Conqueror and the 100-year war and the square in the centre of town is simply beautiful, with cobbled streets and timber houses everywhere. The view from the castle is spectacular.

A short walk through the castle grounds takes you to a house built into the side of the cliff where you will find a plaque that commemorates the hiding of airmen, by the French resistance, during WW11.

20 minutes from Domfront, you find the ‘belle epoque’ spa town of Bagnoles de l’Orne and 1 hour in the other direction sees you at the Normandy coast.

Please note Check-in time is after 4.00pm and Check-out time is 10.00am, however suitcases etc can be left at the house at an agreed time.

About Lyn Brannan

My husband Mike and I moved to France 10 years ago. We love the place, the culture, the people, and you betcha, the wine! The local community welcomed us which is why we feel so at home here. Many of our neighbours take full advantage of the opportunity to practice their English on us....great fun!

Lyn Brannan purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Lyn Brannan chose Orne

We wanted a renovation project and a place in the country. The Cottage ticked both those boxes and more! We spent 3 years painstakingly renovating the house and loved every minute of it. Our neighbours are fantastic and have become good friends.

What makes this cottage unique

To sit outside on a clear night with a glass of wine and watch the Milky Way is breathtaking! It is so peaceful; it’s often possible to hear nothing other than the sounds of the birds and cows in the neighbouring field.

Whilst feeling peaceful and relaxing, The Cottage is only an 8 minute drive to the nearest village......extremely convenient when you run out of bread and milk!! The lanes around the hamlet are ideal for walking and cycling

There is a wonderful sense of history in and about the house.

All we hoped for and more. Wanted to stay forever.

The house and gardens, decor and comforts all made our stay here one of the best we have experienced. We were welcomed by Lyn and Mike and provided some basics, including wonderful French bread and butter. But our favourite was having Lyn and Mike return for a visit. Even without the pastries they brought, it was the highlight because of what fun, kind, interesting people they are. We dream of returning. Thank you, Lyn and Mike. May you prosper from all your hard work.

This wonderful cottage wraps itself around you as you arrive. The peace and quiet is tangible and feeds your feelings of well being. On our arrival Mike and Lyn made us feel very welcome, they are lots of fun, helpful and kind. We have stayed in many Owners Direct properties and none has been as well equipped and delightful as this charming cottage. The photographs on the website are not exaggerated in fact the cottage and gardens are better in real life. We strongly recommend this property to anyone who reads this review. We had a wonderful stay and hope to be back.

Absolutely fantastic. House so pretty, clean, spacious, great character, great location, well equipped, well kept by its fantastic owners Lyn and Mike, so friendly, a lot of hard work was put into this house to make it what it is today.

Lots of brochures in the house about locality and surrounding areas, great information of what the house was before tremendous work carried out to maintain its natural look.

No hesitation in recommending this 17th Century Normandy Farmhouse for holiday breaks, may even return myself someday.

Lovely local pubs, shops, church and walks. Fantastic customer service.

What a delight! In 14 or more years of travelling through Europe and beyond we have never stayed at a holiday home which had such interesting history and been restored, presented and equipped to be extremely comfortable for any number from 2 to 8 or even 10!

We were towards the end of a three week holiday starting in north west Spain and had already had three holiday homes (the second a replacement for the first which had no hot water, nor anyone to fix it on a bank holiday weekend!). The third was a big improvement and in the lovely Dordogne area. La Flaudiere was very well described on the Owners Direct website but nothing could have prepared us for the reality.

If the cottage itself wasn’t enough we arrived to see the owners running into the road, apparently so glad to see us, not because we had been lost or were late, but because they had just been accosted by two cars full of French people whom they mistook for us. What the French wanted we never discovered, but suffice it to say that after a 300 mile drive we were delighted not only to have such a welcome but to find the property after only one wrong turn! And what a property! We live in a 1780 thatched cottage but it is nothing compared with a genuine French wood framed cottage. Of course, the cottage alone is not the full story.

What Lyn and Mike have created is such a perfect example of style and comfort that you would not believe that is could also contain so many examples of technical and artistic flair that there is always something new to discover. it would be enough if the simple requisites of holiday living were catered for in impeccable style, but there are extras! Without giving away any secrets, a feature in the snug (converted goat shed!) could only be described as un-neccessary, unusual, unexpected, but is in fact inspired and so perfectly executed that it could be the most attractive feature of any holiday home anywhere!

The history of the property is a story in itself, indeed relatives of the very first owners still live very close and have passed on most if not all the house’s past, including occupation by the Germans in WW2. We wish we knew even something about what has happened to our house before 1982 when the previous owners bought it.

Especially after a busy three weeks we could perhaps have been forgiven for staying in, however we did venture out to Domfront and Bagnoles-Mayenne. There is all you could want in this area from the Normandy beaches southward.

This cottage is just a dream come true !

  • 5 of 5

pack your stuff now and count on Lyn and Mike to put you at ease !

They restaured and decorate an old charming cottage in the english taste with care and love. The story begun around 10 years before with a cute but a bit creepy old french normandy's house, they put 6 years of love and care in it to make it a little jewel to live in !

the garden is cute, made of dwarf trees (magnolia, camellia) plenty of tables to dine or play on, with bycicles ready to ride and games of wood like french boules and skittles... a barn with an open bar to drink beer or wine as you like and play darts when it's rainning or sun shining like hell all in a very british spirit... For little ones there's a swing on a branch (perfect for my 3 yers old boy !). They are many benches to seat and look at the sky or the green horizon in front of the house. not a lot of cars passing in the street nearby... some beautifull feet of wisteria ornate the front of the cottage and makes it lovely !

Then you pass the door ! and enter a cosy home plenty of confortable sofa and armchair, great wood furnitures, plenty of things very usefull, great beds and gigantic kitchen to make our meals, plenty of dishes to present them lovely, and all the machines to facilitate the living (washy mashins and dryer. Be aware of the shower :) needs explaination to use but when we know, it's super cool ! then bath is so charming in the better chamber, with sun entering on the morning... We simply loved our staying there... Be the next :)

Beautiful Property in a lovely location

  • 5 of 5

As a family we had a lovely week in this house. From the moment we were met by the Mike and Lynn, who couldn't have been more hospitable, the holiday was one of relaxation. The children enjoyed both the size of the house and the grounds in which to play. Cannot recommend this house enough and I have no doubts I shall return here in the future.
