About Michael O'Mahony

We first visited Rye about 5 years ago and have been back regularly ever since as it is a firm family holiday favourite. When the chance to acquire Hall House Cottage came up we were very keen as we knew it was somewhere guests liked to return to.

Michael O'Mahony purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Michael O'Mahony chose East Sussex

Rye is a hidden jewel of a town on the south coast. Historic and picturesque, it offers so much, restaurants, pubs, places to visit and also serves as an excellent base for exploring the Sussex and Kent countryside.

What makes this cottage unique

Hall House Cottage is indeed a property steeped in history and merits its own page in the book "Rye Rebuilt" (by David Martin and others).

With kitchen and bathroom equipped to modern standards, it's main attraction is the cosy and comfortable cottage feel, especially when the wood-burner in the dining room is roaring away.

It's a short walk to excellent restaurants like the George, The Union Steakhouse and pubs like the Standard and the Ship Inn. Not to mention the excellent fish and chips at Marinos.

Notes on accommodation: Hall House Cottage is one of a number of former medieval Hall Houses in Rye, so called because it’s 14th century construction predated chimneys. The inhabitants lived in an open hall with sleeping platforms, using the centrally located fire on the ground floor for cooking and heating, venting the smoke through a hole in the thatched roof. Utility Room: The downstairs utility room houses a washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: An initial supply of logs is provided for the wood burning stove. Linen and towels are provided, electricity included. Bedding and towels are changed on weekly basis. Other: The downstairs lounge provides a cosy and comfortable space, with sofas (one of which converts to a double bed). A large screen TV (with freeview), and dvd player to keep the whole family amused.

Fabulous 15th Century House

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property with lots of character, the rooms are of a good size, beds are very comfortable. Well equipped with everyday essentials, clean and tidy. Nice welcome gift on arrival, which went down very well. Plenty of games along with games console to keep the children entertained in the evening. Prime location. We had a great stay and will definitely be back.

I'm sorry, I have already sent a review, perhaps you didn't receive it. The cottage was lovely and the weather was HOT. Love the village and surrounds and loved watching a young seagull learn to fly and his first take-off flight. Would happily recommend the holiday and cottage to friends and family. Mary Hales

We had a wonderful holiday. The cottage was well fitted out & brilliantly situated for visiting all the attractions of Rye. It is a charming cottage & its modern refurbishments have been very sympathetically achieved.

Part of Ryes history.

  • 4 of 5

Plenty of room, in a historic building, set in a beautiful town.

Room for improvement in the cottage. No shower in bathroom (fitting broken), no shelving in shower room, nowhere to hang clothes in one bedroom. No light in bathroom. Could do with chair in each bedroom.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at Hall House Rye and we certainly appreciate your comments as we are always striving to make our guest’s time in the cottage a good experience. We’re glad you found the property had plenty of room and enjoyed the building’s historic character. Regarding your comments for possible improvements, the walk in shower room does have shelving although perhaps an extra shelf in the shower area would improve things. Regarding the guest bathroom, the layout does not suit having a shower and we are clear in our description that the only shower is in the ensuite to the master bedroom. I recall that we drove down from Surrey to adjust the tv so that you could enjoy the snooker and regarding lighting we try to keep a stock of light bulbs in the kitchen drawer. The master bedroom does not have space for a wardrobe so we have put a small stand there on which a few shirts, trousers and a jacket can be hung. Mostly with families staying they are happy to use the wardrobe in the guest bedroom. I think it’s a good idea to put a chair in each bedroom and we will take care of that. Thank you again for your comments and for staying at Hall House Cottage. Best regards Mike
