Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom Cottage - Peaceful rural location with great access to airport, beaches and all amenities

The Casita El Refugio is an authentic stone-built cottage, in the grounds of a much larger finca dating back to the 16th century. It is nestled in the countryside 5km from the typically Mallorcan town of Llucmajor where you can enjoy the market three times a week with an abundance of fresh, local products. In addition, Llucmajor offers a good choice of supermarkets, restaurants and bars such as Cafe Colon on the market place which is one of the oldest tapas bars on the island.

It is the ideal holiday cottage for two people (double bed) and is perfect for a young family with the possibility of a cot for a child up to the age of two. Romantic and traditional, it is remarkably secluded and peaceful, yet only five minutes drive from excellent transport links to the airport (15 mins) and Palma (20 mins). The famous, unspoilt beach of Es Trenc with its 2km of fine-grained sand and crystal clear water is just 10 minutes down the road, and the beaches of Sa Rapita and the Playa de Palma are also close-by.

Beautiful, well-stocked, Mediterranean gardens surround the casita, which has total privacy and is on its own plot, at a distance from the main house. You can enjoy breakfast on one terrace, lunch on another and dinner or a BBQ on a third, as you follow sun or shade the whole day through depending on your preference. There are lovely views of surrounding countryside and distant mountains, and you might even enjoy the almond blossom in the orchard and the sheep in the surrounding fields depending on the time of year you visit. As well as almond, there are olive, lemon, apricot, fig and carob trees in the garden surrounding a lovely 11.5m pool in which you can swim laps or just cool down depending on your mood; again there is ample seating in both shade and sun.

The casita has an open plan living and dining area, a separate kitchen with quality appliances and a large bathroom. The house is decorated with a luxurious and characterful blend of antique and modern furniture and oozes country house comfort and charm. The accommodation is spacious (89m2) but cosy, with a wood burning stove and a separate fireplace. There is a private parking area next to the casita.

About Nicola Hall

We live in England with our 2 teenage children. We love travelling and exploring new things; we like good food and wine and enjoy being outdoors, be it on a beach or on a bike. These are a few of the many reasons why we plan to relocate to Mallorca at some point in the future. At the moment, to make our lives easier when we get there, we are desperately trying to learn Spanish!

Nicola Hall purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Nicola Hall chose Migjorn Region

We live a busy life in the UK and had been searching high and low for somewhere that offers the quality of life and sunshine that we truly crave. The property was love at first sight. To us, it says 'rural Mallorca' - pretty and peaceful with charm and character in bucketfuls! We can get from the airport to the door in 15 minutes and can feel ourselves unwind the moment we arrive.

What makes this cottage unique

Casita El Refugio is on its own plot surrounded by trees and a beautiful Mediterranean garden and enjoys great privacy overlooking the almond orchard. The 150 year old casita benefits from exposed stone walls and has been renovated with great attention to detail, preserving the traditional Mallorquin charm. Casita El Refugio is a great base to relax and from which to explore everything that Mallorca has to offer - beautiful beaches, spectacular mountains, great wines, world-class cycling, well-maintained golf courses, good quality horse-riding and of course the sights and sounds of Palma. The nearby towns and villages of Llucmajor, Campos, Santanyi and Porreres offer great local markets and all the amenities needed for a relaxed self-catering holiday. By the same token, if you crave some culture and sophistication, the magnificent cathedral city of Palma is an easy 20 minute drive with its beautiful old town, great shopping and a wide variety of restaurants, bars and cafes.

A truly memorable week at el Refugio

  • 5 of 5

El Refugio is a very special place. Owner Nicola and manager Clemens were extremely helpful in both providing information as well as preparing the cottage for our week there, even though it really was off season. The cottage is lovely, excellently appointed and equipped and one of the coziest accommodations we've ever had. The setting is wonderful and the gardens beautiful, a real treat to have breakfast outside in the morning and cervezas late in the afternoon. Quaint villages, stunning coastal drives and local fiestas made the week in Mallorca memorable. Anyone looking for a special accommodation in a special place should consider El Refugio.

Darauf freuen wir uns das ganze Jahr

  • 5 of 5

Tranquility in the Countryside

  • 5 of 5

When looking for a place to stay for our summer holidays we 'stumbled' upon El Refugio not by design, but purely by accident. Unlike most internet 'accidents' this was one accident with no regrets attached and we are thankful it happened. The pictures included do not do this hideaway justice as the peace and tranquility can't accurately be brought to light with two dimensional pictures.

We spend two fabulous weeks in brilliant sunshine suntanning, swimming, star gazing the stresses and strains of everyday life away (chuck in many BBQ's and evening beers into the mix). Close enough to all the amenities you need (5 minutes drive) but far enough away to feel you have escaped from the hustle and bustle of the crowds.

Nicola provided extensive and useful information prior to our arrival, and a warm welcome from Clemens eased us nicely into our stay. We explored many places on the island and maps and guides in the Casita made planning a breeze.

We will have no hesitation booking El Refugio again the next time we visit.

Peaceful, beautiful home away from home

  • 5 of 5

El Refugio is a delightful casita with absolutely everything you could need! Weather you want to relax by the pool, BBQ under the stars or swing in the hammock, it's covered! The location is excellent! We were concerned about not staying in the 'cool' parts of the island (northern towns), but actually feel lucky we stayed here as absolutely everywhere is in easy reach, it's less touristy and you're close to all the eateries of Palma (and easy access to the airport). Perfect to be honest :)

Nicola is a lovely host. She respects your privacy, but we also had great chats around the pool :) we felt very lucky to have found this place and will be back when we're next in Mallorca xx

Amazing Amazing Amazing

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic time we had. From the moment we arrived I was spellbound. Private, quiet, peaceful such a delightful place. The casita was lovely with everything we needed. It was wonderful sitting outside every day having breakfast and chilling at night under the stars. The gardens were beautiful and so well kept and we used the pool as often as we could as the weather was great. Loved being able to sunbathe then just in the pool when it got too hot. Definitely a highlight of the place. Llucmajor the nearest town was only a 5/10 minute drive from the casita and had great supermarkets and restaurants and the airport was only 20 minutes away.

Nicola the owner was fantastic. She made our booking so easy to do and kept in touch with us along the way. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Will definitely book to go again. Wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. Absolutely loved it 😍

A relaxing gem

  • 5 of 5

We found the Casita easily from owner Nicola's directions...the hire car satnav proved to be sulky at times. We rolled into the coutyard where gardeners were working on the stunning gardens and were met by Clemens a lovely German guy who looks after the Casita with his partner for its guests. He was very welcomng and told us all we needed to know to make our stay easy and enjoyable. Once on our own we explored the gardens..there are several 'rooms' with different plantings and the abundance of roses was lovely to see considering ours in Scotland had barely re-emerged after winter. The pool area is lovely and sun loungers lurk in twos all over the outside so that sun can becaught from any angle throughout the day...the garden out of the side of the casi.ta is particularly private overlooking the almond orchard and fields beyond. The Casita itself is tastefully appointed and the ambiance is refreshing.

Nowhere in Mallorca is too far away to be reached, explored and returned form in a day which makes El Refugio a great place to be based.... away from the hustle of resort towns. Clemens is a mine of information on the local area and an informative folder tells you all about the markets to visit for local artisan work ( we liked Santanyi) and fresh food. Inca market is the place to haggle for bargain leather goods.

We only had a week so packed a lot in including swimming in the pool in May which was possibe but bracing....and at Cala Pi a sheltered beach a short drive away. There is a beach bar so everything is catered for if you don't want to take a picnic.

We returned home refreshed and relaxed...a longer stay would only have increased these feelings. HIghly recommended.
