The Great House is a genuine romantic location filled with antiques, yet has independent air conditioning in each bedroom and over head fans in the formal rooms. A large swimming pool sits in tropical gardens, walk in the 26 acres and find the the sugar mill, plantation managers house and the creek itself. The location means that the Great House is cooled by the sea breezes and has the added benefit of thick walls to keep you cool in the tropical afternoons.
Our friendly house staff will show you the wonders of living in the Caribbean and ensure your stay is historic in every way
lucky to have lived in such a beautiful home on such an amazing island and happy to share with others who can enjoy it as much as my family and I have
JANEY HOWELL purchased this villa in 1969
The Great House is historic, romantic and the most wonderful place to have a truely original holiday you will never forget. It is the only Plantation that has remained as a family home throughout its history and is still our home. This is a step into a living history
If you want to see Antigua from a completely different perspective then stay in our historic plantation full of original antiques brought over by the Planters over the last 400 years. The Great House was built in 1660 and has remained virtually untouched except for the recent addition of electricity (and air conditioning in the bedrooms) and a swimming pool. You are mentally as far away from tourists and all inclusive hotels as you want to be and yet near enough geographically to 365 white sandy beaches and beach bars
How does one start to describe what was almost a dream. The Great House is unique. Spacious grounds to explore. Fresh limes to pick from the trees. The whole place just oozed history. The Great House it self is just stepping back in time. I thought i should be wearing a dress out of Gone with the Wind. The very beautiful house is like staying on a film set. The view from the drawing room down a mahogany line of trees to the Bay. The dinning room, especially candle lit, was the most breathtaking experience. The fabulous four poster beds, in every bed room, well wow, true glamour. The beautiful swimming pool with its pool cabin with fridges reminded us the we were in the 21st century. Although a very very orivate property we could easily pop out to see other parts of the island. Shirley Heights especially on a Sunday with the steel band. Any one of the 365 marvellous sandy beaches. The unique capital, St. Johns. The market place with the fresh fish catch, or buying the nutmeg with the mace still on it. Or just out of town a fabulous sushi restaurant. Lots of opportunity for water sports, water skiing, diving, banana fun, or a cruise around the island with lots of rum punch served.
But The Great House is the biggest draw and i was hard pressed to leave. The owner ensures that you are well looked after and in a very professional but personal way by the full time staff at the house. At all times you were beautifully cared for but never intruded upon. The beauty of the property and the wonderful views across the bay and out to sea were just yours to enjoy. No chattering fellow tourists to impinge on your privacy. The house is more that big enough for you to each do your own thing with several reception rooms and fabulous outside areas for sitting, sun bathing or outdoor dining.
A very special place that we felt privileged to have called our home for three glorious weeks.
What a fabulous week!
This is an experience of the real Antigua, whilst living in beautiful surroundings with wonderful staff to look after you.
The views from the terrace every morning whilst you sip your tea and coffee in the morning are second only to the views from the swimming pool terrace.
The house and estate are a reminder of the history of plantation life, and just opposite you can visit a similar plantation open to the public to learn the history and function of each building.
Nothing is far away in Antigua... beautiful beaches, the Capital St. John's, supermarkets, and so forth. But a car is absolutely essential, and a 4x4/jeep probably sensible.
The staff of Vivienne, Joe and Felix are so obliging and helpful.
All in all, a memorable, restful experience where we returned really feeling that we had visited Antigua, with all its history and culture, whilst enjoying a special time in a beautiful property.
If you would like to stay in a resort where you could be anywhere in the world.... this is not for you!

Antigua is famous for having 365 white sand beaches - there is a beach within a ten minute drive of where ever you are on the island. There is shoreline to the bay that you can walk to through the grounds, however swimming is not great - there are fab white sandy beaches and crystal clear seas just 10 -15 minutes by car or local bus
Antigua only has the one International Airport - car hire is essential
The island is 108 square miles so everything is close. The village of Pares has a local grocery shop and is a few minutes away. The capital St Johns has great supermarkets and local market for wonderful fruit and vegetables. Historic sites include Bettys Hope Plantation and sugar mill museum -10 minute walk and Nelsons Dockyard at English Harbour, 20 minutes drive. StingRay City is across the creek where you can swim or walk among Sting Rays
Antigua has many restaurants and beach cafes - explore the island and then come back to your own secret location ! If you are interested in sailing come and join us in April for the Regatta, or in August for Carnival.
