We rented out the entire complex for multiple families with varying ages, ranging from 13 - 75. The accommodation satisfied all. For the immobile, it allows a picturesque view, peaceful surrounding scenery and flat surfaces to walk on. For the teenagers, there were plenty of activities from cycling and swimming to a separate tv room for them to 'hangout' in the evenings, without disturbing the overall ambiance. For the average agers, we were surrounded by wineries, daily markets, beautiful scenery, historical locations and engaging architecture.

The accommodation itself is immaculately clean with three functional and more than adequately supplied kitchens. Attention to detail was observed through Nespresso coffee makers in each space, individual washing machines and dishwashers for those who require them.

Each cottage comes with an additional garden, complete with outdoor furniture for alfresco dining creating space for all. Management was friendly, helpful and competent.

I would highly recommend this accommodation, as it is genuinely idyllic.

*Advisable to rent a car for easy mobility.

The barn is fantastic

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful property and so well equipped. My only very minor point is that it would be nice to have a downstairs loo but otherwise wonderful. The garden and pool are beautiful and I enjoyed many pre-breakfast swims. We liked to salt water pool and the water was always warm. The kitchen is the best I have ever used in a self-catering property, and fantastic to have two refridgerators when catering for 8 people. The en suite bathrooms were very nice and the bedrooms huge. You really have thought of everything!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your kind words. I'm delighted to hear you had such a lovely time. Your comment regarding the downstairs toilet is a valid one. We do have one but I'm afraid it was behind door the storage room which we had to lock during guests visits. We will look to use another space next year for our storage items. We hope you will come and visit us again soon. Kind regards Melanie

St Emilion is a truly beautiful village set into a hillside on the north side of the river Dordogne and is approximately 25 minutes drive. Castillion la Bataille is approximately 10-15 minutes drive from the property and offers a fantastic re-enactment of the famous last battle of the 100 year war each year in late Jul - early Aug.

Further Details:

On our doorstep, Montcaret, or 'Moncaret la Romaine' as some call it, boasts an 11th Century church. Also a Roman Villa, only partly excavated and said to be one of the best in all of France sits in the centre of the village. The mosaics are superb and these alone are well worth a visit. The cruciform gallery is said to have been the largest in the entire 5th century Roman Empire. Guided tours are available.

In 1453, Castillion la Bataille was where the last major battle of the Hundred Years war was fought. It is here also that every summer in late July and early August, a spectacular floodlit re-enactment of that battle takes place. Spread over 16 acres and involving some 800 participants, this is a magnificently organised and executed show. The highlight is an intense two hour battle incorporating amazing stunts and pyrotechnics.

Spend the day wandering through everyday life of the middle ages, between the farms and inns, see the puller of teeth and the hawkers before enjoying the battle. Finally, finish your day with dinner in the Medieval Inn. The festival runs for two weeks with the battles being re-enacted daily. Booking is essential for this exceptionally well organised event. After hostilities have ceased, Castillon la bataille returns to being a peaceful little town with an excellent market each Monday morning.

St Emilion is a twelfth century town consists predominantly of old stone houses with shuttered windows and cobbled streets. Hidden beneath the town is Europe's largest underground church, a magnificent place hewn out of the soft rock by Benedictine monks in the ninth century. Louis XIV described the wines of St Emilion as the 'nectar of the gods'. The first weekend in May sees about 20 of the local Chateaux open their doors and numerous concerts and wine tastings are held throughout the year - Fete de Printemps (Jun) and the Harvest (Sept). Recently added to UNESCO's World heritage list it would be a pity to come so near and not visit.
