|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
The Jas du Pontias was once a little farm on the edge of the medieval town. Today, we are part of a residential street in the heart of Nyons, a lively town with 7000 people.
Downstairs on street level, where the beasts used to live, you’ll find a garage and a cellar with washing/drying facilities. One flight up is the large terrace, the kitchen/dining room with my cookbook collection and its battery of pots hung against glowing-beige walls. Beyond, you will find the vaulted lounge alias first bedroom with an open fireplace. Adjacent to the lounge with its plastered vault, an elegant black and white bathroom was created with a generous shower and a stylish sink. There is also an independent WC on this level. Mostly authentic pieces of art, with a few reproductions, are scattered over the walls. On the next level up, where the hay used to be stacked, you’ll find the second bedroom, cozy and forest-green under the roof, with its en-suite bathroom, complete with quality gear: bath, bidet, sink and WC. The stairway and hall are brightly lit by natural light through the roof window and its stark-white walls host more of my art collection.
Our street is a quiet cul-de-sac street. Our area is called la Drôme Provençale – the south of the Drôme Department and the north of Provence, located in the South-East of France. You will bathe in the delicious microclimate of Nyons, a small, picturesque and animated town at the foot of the Drôme Mountains. The house is cool in summer and cozy in winter. In the heart of town, you will stay right next to a good choice of restaurants and shops. Meanwhile, vast nature is to be found at walking distance. (There is a good collection of detailed walking maps available to you.)
In case of a rare rainy day, you can borrow our extended collection of board games and cards and for evenings an interesting collection of auteur films on DVD is at your disposal. The spacious kitchen offers semi-professional equipment, including many cookbooks. I make sure you'll find some salt, pepper, olive oil and vinegar when you arrive. If need be, you can give me a short shopping-list for your first night's meal.
My French son Louis and I live in another old farmhouse, right next door to Le Jas, with my Scottish husband Nicholas. I am Dutch and arrived in Provence, by way of New York, in 1993. I live in Nyons since 2012. Nicholas arrived here in 2003. He is a retired British-university teacher and currently teaches private yoga lessons, paints and writes. Louis is busy at the local high-school. I write short-stories and I take care of our guests.
Whenever we can, we like to take Louis along to discover new mountain trails and wander around the castles, priories and medieval villages sprawled across nature everywhere. It is good living in Nyons because of the microclimat; without the Mistral (blowing from the north in most of Provence).
Manon van der LAAN purchased this house in 2013
Nyons is located at a two hours drive from the beautiful Vercors (to the north) and between us and the majestic mountains to the north there are green mountains, winding roads, goats, vultures, canyons, bees, underground caverns, olive trees, vines, lavender fields… To the south of Nyons, you will find extensive Roman ruins (Vaison la Romaine), a theatre festival and a pope’s palace (Avignon) and the sea (Côtes d’Azur). Our location has the advantage of being rural and quiet, as well as being close to many places of interest. A part from being heaven for walking aficionados, the area is also a popular destination with cyclists. I bought Le Jas in 2013. Here, I receive family and friends from far away and so does Nicholas. It was renovated and decorated with much care and attention to quality.
The Jas is located in the center of town, around the corner from restaurants, shops and the authentic weekly Provençal market. However, our street is very quiet. (It is a cul-de-sac street and only people who live here drive into it.) Also accessible directly by foot are the many walking trails leading into the mountains.
An advantage of Le Jas for you is that we live next door. One of us will be there to welcome you and show you around at your arrival. During your stay, please feel free to knock on our door and ask any question you might have. I supply a folder with suggestions for restaurants, wineries, day trips, practical information and contact details of the artists who’s original works are exposed around the house. Meanwhile we are on-site for any information you may need.
To amend our Aloha review, the hire car we booked was a Fiat 500 but they substituted a larger car that we could not get into the garage. It was so easy to find nearby free parking that we kept the larger car and enjoyed this really excellent property in all respects!
We stayed in this beautiful, comfortable and very clean house for a month in May/June. The house has a wonderful kitchen with everything you could possibly desire. The bathrooms were exceptionally nice, one with a tub and one with wonderful shower. The house is in the middle of the old town near shops, restaurants, the market, but it is on a very quiet street. Manon and Nicholas were very hospitable, but not intrusive and we enjoyed getting to know them. There is a lot of good walking in the area and interesting towns to discover a little further afield. The food is wonderful! Recommend Le Charette Bleu just outside town.In the spring we had no difficulty finding parking in town. We had a small Fiat500 but the street is too small to turn into the garage that was mentioned. We highly recommend both the house and the town of Nyons. Thank you Manon.
This was my second holiday in this lovely house. I was not disappointed. The house is perfect, my hosts were more than helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I will definitely return next year!
Manon has created a beautiful, comfortable home away from home that wants for nothing. The apartment is spotless and is beautifully designed with a kitchen equipped to meet the need of every cook or chef.
My mom, sister-in-law and I spent a week here in September and found it very hard to leave the charms of Nyons and our lovely apartment. We would return in a heart beat and certainly on a Thursday morning in time to enjoy the town's fabulous market.
A bien tot!
The online photographs probably don't do justice to this lovely apartment. Beautifully well equipped with top of the range kitchen items including dishwasher! The apartment has been designed and specified by the owner and everything has been carefully thought about and it was sparklingly clean when we arrived.
Manon greeted us on arrival and was just next door if we needed anything but was not at all intrusive. An invitation for a glass of wine was gratefully accepted and it was lovely to get to know both Manon and Nick a little.
Just a two minute walk gets you to morning croissants or lunchtime ice creams and a selection of good restaurants only another couple of minutes.
There is great walking in the area but mostly, it being very hot while we were there, we relaxed on the terrace and played lots of games of Yanif! There is swimming in local rivers and also at the towns new Water Centre but it has strange opening hours and we missed it! There is a lavender still in the centre of town so the whole town has a wonderful aroma!
I would definitely recommend this for a couple or two couples. We came with my daughter and husband and, as we were paying, we got the good bed and they got the sofa bed! (they said it was comfortable though!) Two bathrooms ensures privacy and no waiting around for the shower.
Recently renovated property in a great setting just off the main eating and browsing streets of this pedestrian old walled town.
Special interest holidays:
If you are interested in taking a few private Ashtanga Yoga classes or if you would like to brush up on your use of the French language, please call us to discuss.
For day trips, you can drive to the Côte d'Azur from Nyons in 2 hours. We recommend the Saintes Maries de la Mer in the Camargue (closest) or Cassis with its Calanques, next to Marseille.
The close airports include Nîmes, Marseille, Montpellier and Béziers. You can also fly into Lyon or Grenoble, a bit further away. We recommend train travel; the TGV to Valence or Avignon, with connecting local trains and even a bus, which will take you to the center of Nyons. It is not essential to have a car here, as you can do shopping and walking directly from the house. However, with many sites to visit we do recommend wheels.
Nyons is a 45 minute drive from the A7 motorway at Montélimar Sud and about the same distance to Orange Sud. It is a 1 hour and 15 minute drive from Avignon. We are at 20 minutes from Vaison la Romaine. Many places of interest can be found at less than 1 hour's drive from Le Jas.
A big Provençal market takes place every Thursday morning in Nyons throughout the year. In season, a smaller market is added every Sunday morning.
On a pedestrian street parallel to our street, you will find a collection of restaurants with their terraces for different tastes and budgets. A few more are to be found on the beautiful Place des Arcades, classified historic monument, at 2 minutes from the house. The town has several supermarkets, banks, and pharmacies, wine stores and cooperatives selling local produce, such as olives and olive oil.
Nyons is quaint and great for an evening stroll, with its mediaeval quarters and Romanesque bridge. Our street is located right in the middle of these.
You can also visit Dieulefit (pottery), Grignan (Château de Mme de Sévigné) and Taulignan (silk museum).
You can do wine tastings and savor the fruitier local wines or prefer the strong and tannic Côtes du Rhône Villages, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, only 30 minutes away. Châteauneuf du Pape is at a 50 minute drive.
The area offers many festivals, mostly in season, with music (everywhere), dance (Vaison) and theatre (Avignon, Grignan) and our mayor organises a series of free concerts around town during July and August.
There’s a choice of walking trails in the mountains surrounding town and several natural ponds where you can spend the day and swim. Nyons has a massive swimming pool with slides and other fun for kids, including a restaurant.
The microclimate is gentle; we are protected from the Mistral (strong Provençal wind). This friendly climate allows for hiking all year. It does get hot in summer, but in the middle of the night the Pontias, a very local wind from the north, often comes to cool the air off for good sleep.
