Villa Azzurra is a renovated but modern property. It sleeps 8 persons in 4 bedrooms and up to 4 more people on 2 kingsize sofa beds.It is 250 sq. meters in size and has a very airy spacious feel. The independent villa is set in a lovely walled garden on an acre of land. It is approached through electric gates with audio screening inside the villa. It is situated about 3kms from the delightful medieval town of Oria and very close to the Sanctuary of San Cosimo, both can be seen clearly from the villa. Al fresco living is really the Pugliese way of life especially in the summer months. The villa has a large covered verandah to the front with plenty of seating and dining facilities. There is a further terrace a couple of steps down from the pool terrace adjacent to one of the olive groves. On this terrace there is a very large wooden gazebo 7mtrs x 5mtrs. This provides shelter for numerous very comfortable lounging areas, another dining area and an outdoor kitchen. There is a wood burning pizza oven and an open barbecue along with a marble surfaced preparation area and sink. All this area is well lit for cooking and eating under the stars. The very large saline pool is 13x5 meters and entered from the Roman steps, which are also great for sitting/lying on. The depth is 1mtr 40cms throughout, perfect for a decent swim and teaching your children to swim. There are 8 luxury white resin rattan sun beds and 4 grey with extra -soft cushions; these are dotted around the paved patio surrounding the pool. There are also 7 turquoise sun beds, which can be taken to the beach or used as extras for guests. The pool and surrounding area can be lit for evening swimming. Close to the pool there is an outdoor shower, which can also be used when returning from the beach as well as a full 4th bathroom in the outhouse. At night the pool area provides a fabulous spot to enjoy a Prosecco or local Primitivo - pre or post dinner -whilst watching the spectacular sunsets!

About Gaynor Geraghty
Ray and I live in a country area outside the market town of Selby, N. Yorks. We have one child who is a musician. We have been holidaying in Puglia over the past 18 years and really love the area. We enjoy the ancient inland towns and cities and beautiful seaside towns and villages. We particularly like Oria as a centre to visit for restaurants, markets and history. The people are helpful and friendly. We bought our villa as a shell and have lovingly had it developed into a beautiful 4 bed property with a pool. We have made friends with local people and would hope that anybody staying in the villa would enjoy their stay and holiday as much as we always do.
Gaynor Geraghty purchased this Villa in 2013
Why Gaynor Geraghty chose Oria
The property is in a charming location in the countryside 3 kilometres S.W. of Oria. We recognised the potential of the property as a holiday home close to the city and with good access to motorway routes to other centres and seaside areas. The airport at Brindisi is less than half an hour away whilst the airport at Bari is one hour and a half's drive to the property. The food and wine are excellent and are cheaper than many other areas in Italy. We love this area because of the wonderful Medieval and historic towns, fabulous beaches and nowhere is too far away to visit. The Villa has been transformed from a basic shell to what we now feel is a beautiful property that has exceeded our wildest dreams. Staying at Villa Azzurra will provide an experience that will give you a true taste of the "Dolce Vita".
What makes this Villa unique
The villa is in its own grounds of one acre containing 100 olive trees and other trees and plants. It is in a quiet and peaceful location so that everyone staying there can relax and chill out by the pool enjoying the lovely climate. The outdoor kitchen and dining areas provide further options to enhance your holiday and this includes a full sized pizza oven and built in barbecue next to a huge wooden gazebo. The drive into Oria takes about five minutes. The villa is equipped to a high standard with all new facilities to enjoy. It also has a very large lounge dinner plus a second large lounge downstairs allowing guests to have their own space when required. This makes it and ideal property for a number of families and or guests of varying ages. There are many things to do on our doorstep, including visiting ancient towns and cities both inland and at the seaside. There is safe off road parking for up to 4 cars inside the grounds of the villa. The local Primitivo red wine is manufactured just 7 kilometres from our villa and local white wines are grown and readily available at very cheap prices! The property provides a very tranquil and restful experience for its guests. We have enjoyed many fabulous sunsets from the terraces and verandah at night.

Absolutely Stunning Villa!
My family and I were in Puglia for a Wedding at Castello Monaci and booked to stay there for a week. The Villa had all the amenities you could have wished for and easy access to surrounding areas of the region. Every attention to detail has been paid inside and out. The only problem was that a week was not long enough!
The owner Gaynor was extremely helpful in the lead up to going out to Puglia and during our stay Mike was always on hand if we had need of anything. I would thoroughly recommend this villa to anyone heading to Puglia for a holiday.
Thank you so much for such a warm and generous review. It is most rewarding when guests recognise the attention to detail and the amenities we provide. We love the area ourselves and agree the villa is conveniently situated to visit many interesting, historical and cultural places and events as well as only being a short drive away from stunning beaches.
We look forward to welcoming any of your friends or family in the future.
Expectations let down by bags of refuse and blame for bad maintenance
Beware of this rental! It gives us no pleasure in posting a negative review here. It is the first time we have done so in 23 years of renting villas across the Mediterranean from owners who possess a real duty of care towards people who rent from them in good faith. We were charged for damage to a shutter which blew off its hinges during a fierce storm. The owners said we'd left it unfastened, the truth was it was held on by a makeshift piece of thin wire (photo evidence sent to HomeAway HQ). It was no coincidence that all other shutters which had proper clasps (dogs) holding them fast were unaffected. Thankfully neither I, my wife or children were hit by the shutter or the flying glass from a wall light it shattered. Instead of thanking us for clearing up the mess, they billed us. We also feel obliged in the public interest to alert others to what we were faced with on arrival -- bins full of stinking rubbish from previous renters which we were told to empty when the council trucks passed. In every villa in the past 23 years, bins have always been empty and clean when we arrived. Like most reasonable people, we always dispose of our own refuse, but would never expect to handle waste left by others! To make matters worse, black plastic rubbish bags and other litter were scattered across the scrubland approaches to the villa, which the owners blamed on "local Italians". We would suggest trying to resolve the problem with local authorities instead of pointing the finger at citizens in an area from which you seek to profit. We would not recommend this villa. Truly, a great shame.
In response to Mr. Pagani’s complaints against us, our villa and the whole of Puglia: Mr P and all his party were happy when they arrived, as they were one week later when they left. They were complimentary about the Villa and facilities and said that they had had “a very enjoyable holiday.” Mr P had a CHANGE OF HEART when he received our email deducting part of the deposit for the damage, NINE DAYS after he left the Villa. Mr P must take responsibility for his actions as renters also have a duty of care to take appropriate action including responding to deteriorating weather conditions to protect themselves and the property. Instead he is vitriolic in his attack about our property exaggerating other issues to try and build a case. The shutters had NOT been secured by ANYTHING! They were allowed to swing in the high winds until they smashed a light, broke and fell off their hinges. This was corroborated by a worker, who came to remove the shutter for repair and commented that the “wire clasp was unbroken and undamaged.” No damage to the external shutters has ever happened in 4 years of guests’ use. Thankfully, he nor the other 6 adults in his party were hit by the shutter or the flying glass. Probably because the shutter and the wall lamp are situated on the poolside of the villa at a 90% right angle and 8-9 metres away from where the family were sitting, eating their meal under the open fronted verandah of the villa. In response to the hyperbole used by Mr. P concerning the rubbish: There was NO rubbish inside the villa when they arrived! Our representative showed them the rubbish collection timetable and where the bins were outside in the grounds and he explained the system to them. There were no negative comments. The bins were not all full of ‘stinking rubbish’ as described! The fly tipping of rubbish in the countryside can be a problem in southern Italy. It is unreasonable of Mr P to imply we are responsible for this. Neither do we blame ALL local Italians for any rubbish discarded in the area. We will, however, take on board Mr P’s observations.
We would like to invite prospective clients to read the THIRTY 5 STAR reviews we have earned in 4 years, to make up their own minds whether they wish to book our beautiful villa or not!
Villa Azzurra is simply stunning. We had the pleasure of holding our wedding ceremony in the olive grove on the villa grounds so it will always hold a special place in our hearts!
We stayed for 2 weeks in this beautiful villa. It is spacious, clean & well maintained and a credit to the owners. Mike the property manager was very helpful and friendly.
The stunning villa grounds are also well maintained and spacious. We spent hours in the swimming pool cooling off from Puglian sunshine! We loved the outside gazebo, all lit up at night and perfect for a family BBQ.
We loved the location too.. Oria has some lovely restaurants. Our favourite trip was to Porto Cesareo, a quaint little port with a lovely seafood restaurant.
We loved our stay at Villa Azzurra and will definitely be back soon!!!
Thanks so much. Jonny & Kate
Thank you so much for your kind review.
This was the first wedding that we have ever hosted so we are delighted that everything met your expectations.
We are especially pleased that you found that the villa provided plenty of space both internally an dxternally for the larger than average number of guests staying at the villa!
We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
Kind regards and congratulations.
Gaynor and Ray.
A lovely location for a family holiday
All three generations of our family recently stayed at the Villa Azzura, this was something of an experiment as we had never all been away together at the same time and in the same place!
The holiday was a great success and in no small part this was due to the villa and the location itself.
There were 7 adults and three small children and the Villa was plenty big enough for us all and, when it was needed, one could always find a quiet space to read a book or have a crafty 40 winks!
Of course having the pool was a major plus as the children, and some adults were never out of it. Children can easily be kept an eye on while they are in the pool.
The villa is very well equipped with a good kitchen, we didn’t find it necessary to go out in the evenings to eat although there are some very good restaurants in the local town which is about a 10 minute drive away. The barbecue and the pizza oven (a great success) made sure “competitive cooking” took place during the week.
The TV and wi-fi made sure we kept up to date with the World cup.
Some great beaches are only a 40 minute drive away and at Porto Cesareo we hired a boat to do some swimming off the islands and also visited underwater ruins.
If you are a wine drinker you will enjoy visiting some of the best wine producers in Italy, Manduria the centre of Primitivo production, is only a 15 minute drive away.
There are enough bathrooms and showers in the villa to keep everyone happy and the villa comes with a high spec throughout.
Mike, the owners representative in Puglia was really helpful and made us feel welcome and at home straight away.
At some time we hope to go back, we have very fond family memories of the Villa Azzura
Thanks for such a great review. We are delighted that you and your family enjoyed and appreciated the space, facilities and high spec that we try to offer to our guests.
The pizza oven and barbecue are always a hit with guests and these plus our fully fitted kitchen give opportunities for cooking both inside and outside of the villa.
The pool is always appreciated and especially enjoyed by swimmers and guests just wanting to relax and have a cool paddle!
We are pleased that our meet and greet service was so helpful and that Mike was so supportive to you.
We note that you may wish to return in the future so thank you for that!
We visited villa Azzurra with our family of two daughters their spouses and two grandchildren. The intention was to have a good base to tour Puglia from and return to comfort. Villa Azzurra did not disappoint, what an amazing villa! There was plenty of room for all of us with good sized bedrooms and at no point did we feel on top of one another. The fittings are furniture are of good quality and there was probably every electrical convenience item you would ever need. Pot, pans and cutlery a plenty. The outside space was fabulous with a large pool and more than enough space and seating areas. Later in the evening we would sit on the front terrace and watch the sunsets and the amazing red sky's as we enjoyed a glass of wine, or two. We barbecued on a couple of occasions but the pizza oven was a big hit, perfect pizzas and a must do.
The nearby Oria is a lovely hill top town with some great coffee bars and restaurants with very friendly Italians more than willing to put up with our lack of Italian and it was like going back to the seventies, hardly anyone spoke English and it was as cheap as chips. Puglia must be one of the cheapest places in Europe. In the local supermarket Eurospin a decent bottle of wine was about two Euros, a bottle of London gin 4.89 euro, vodka 5.39 euro and prosecco 2.80 euro I kid you not!
Also I must finish this review with a mention to Mike and Annette who welcomed us to the villa, visited us mid week and nothing was too much trouble, also the communication from the owners, Gaynor and Ray with the pre holiday information and welcome pack really helped get the most out of our holiday, thanks.
Thank you so much for your glowing review. We were so pleased to hear that you loved everything about the villa and that you found our representative so helpful. The pizza oven is always a hit as is the large pool!
We agree that Puglia is a lovely traditional region of Italy and very good value for money.
We hope you will return in the future.
Everything you could possibly want!
We had a great 2-week break at Villa Azzurra. We are a family of five adults and we were accompanied by a couple with two small children. The layout of the villa was ideal as the downstairs bedroom and living area provided privacy (and sound proofing!) for the young family. There’s plenty of room both inside and out. We were surprised at just how spacious it was. We would echo the previous comments about how well equipped the kitchen is. If you enjoy cooking you’ll find pretty much everything you’ll need. The wood-fired barbeque and pizza oven were well used, with an enormous supply of dried olive wood on hand. Although there are a great number of lighting options outside, we particularly enjoyed switching out all of the lights and lying back on the pool loungers to view the stars in almost complete darkness! There are beautiful beaches on both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts within easy reach. For the fit (and the brave) we would recommend a visit to Grotta della Poesia, which is on the other side of Lecce. There you can dive from a rock arch (not too high) into a pool of crystal clear water, and swim back under the arch into the open sea. Overall, a holiday not to be forgotten!
Thank you so much for your glowing review. The outside facilities are often enjoyed by guests and you were no exception!
The space is another feature which guests appreciate along with the well equipped kitchen.
The villa's position allows easy access to both coastlines for beach and sea activities which is a good thing to point out.
Thank you for the tip about the diving area;we will pass this information on to future guests.
Thanks again. Please do come back and visit the villa in the future.
Gaynor and Ray
Conveniently located between the Adriatic coast 25 mins drive and Ionian 30. Both have fabulous white sandy beaches some with full facilities. The beaches are safe for children. Torre Guaceto on the Adriatic coast is a blue flag nature reserve. The Ionian beaches at Punto Proscutto and San Pietra in Bevana are very special and two of our favourites. We often go to the seaside town of Porto Cesareo with its fantastic water front gelateria and our favourite restaurant "Al Gambero" excellent seafood
The property is 30 minutes 43kms from Brindisi airport and about 95 minutes 140kms from Bari airport. There are daily flights provided by Ryanair, Easyjet, BA and Alitalia. There is also a port at Brindisi that offers ferries over to Greece. Although there are train stations nearby, which will give you some great day trips, car hire is really essential in order to explore this rich, un-spoilt and varied region of Italy.

Puglia is best known for its fresh Mediterranean produce, amazing olive oil, fruit, vegetables and pasta as well as incredible meat inland and stunning seafood on the coast. The wine is gorgeous, from the excellent Primitivo di Manduria (red) to the superbly quaffable Prosecco (fizzy) and one of our favourites, Leverano (Vecchia Torre white). Villa Azzurra is 3 klms (5 minutes in the car) from the delightful historic town of Oria with its cobbled streets, wonderful restaurants and bars and vibrant market. This stunning medieval town has history around every corner. Puglia is famous for its unique tiny conical trulli buildings and the magnificent Masserias – fortified farmhouses. However, it is largely undiscovered by the rest of the world. If you want to experience true Italy at its best (and eat some of the most delicious food of your life) then you are in the right place! We provide a detailed information pack to our guests, full of recommendations of our favourite local restaurants, local market days, the best local beaches and lots of activities for children like the fabulous safari theme park in Fasanoland (great for adults and children alike). The property is the perfect place to relax and do nothing but if you are interested in seeing Puglia we leave top tips in our file. You will need two days to explore Oria alone with its Frederic 2nd (13th century) castle and palace, extraordinary Jewish quarter dating back to 500AD and exquisite churches. Oria is less 'discovered' than many other parts and as such remains more 'Italian' and much cheaper than many other areas. The restaurants are really fantastic and very reasonable.Beyond Oria are towns and cities galore to explore. In the summer months there is nightly entertainment in both the Medieval town of Oria and the Baroque town of Francavilla Fontana. Entertainment takes the various forms of music and dance, as well as Medieval games in Oria in August with plenty of fireworks!
