About Helen Price
I am a mother of 2 children, and live with my husband in a converted barn next door to the holiday cottage. I grew up at Hagg End, and moved back to live here in 2005. We converted the barn in 2007-8 and moved in, in 2008. We now holiday let the old farm house where I lived as a child. One of the reasons we moved back was to give our children the life style that I had as a child, the sense of freedom and openness which you don't get in a town or city. Surrounded by countryside, we are very lucky to see lots of wild animals as well as the farm animals you would expect. We have a family of deer who are never far away, and see very regularly, daily at certain times of the year. A barn owl who lives at the next property and all the birds who like to wake us with a chorus of happy sounds, including our resident Woodpecker.
Helen Price purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Helen Price chose South Lakeland District
It was the home of my childhood. It was built around 1699, (we have deeds to go back this far, but she could be a few years older), and has retained most of its original character. The setting is ideal for raising children, surrounded by farmland, and footpaths in all directions. There is no shortage of places to go and see. We have the most beautiful skies at night when there are no clouds. The stars are amazing to see, and one of the reasons I love the place so much. Although peaceful and having a sense of remoteness, we are only 30 mins from the M6 and 10 mins from Lake Windermere, so ideal for exploring the Lakes. A great location to live or work or holiday. We also welcome pets, and allow up to 3 dogs as standard, if you wish to bring more, just ask, we try to accommodate our guests when we can.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage comes fully equipped, with everything you can think of. If there is something you need just let us know and we will do our best to get it for you. The large kitchen diner is a big hit with our guests, and it is true, especially here, that the kitchen is the heart of the home. The lounge with its wood burner is cosy and welcoming especially after a long walk, and everyone can relax together, watching the fire, or if that isn't enough the TV too. Hagg End can be a place for parties (no one to hear the noise so be a loud as you like), or to just sit and unwind, and enjoy the peace and quiet. A great location if you have children or pets. There are lots of walks with no cars to worry about, and the views are spectacular on the walk to Lake Windermere just 2.5 miles away.

Just a fabulous weekend in a fabulous place with a fabulous host!
I can't thank Helen enough for her hospitality. Before our stay she was so helpful and communicative. On arrival she was there to show us around, make sure we knew where everything was and how to work everything, on hand if anything was needed, her house is very close but at no point did we feel intruded on, lovely outside space (although the gravel did hurt the dogs paws after a couple of days playing on it, I would recommend using the car parking and grassy area's for exercising/playing with the dogs). House was lovely and warm, beds really comfortable, kitchen was better equipped than my own, basically I cant rave about it more and it was perfect for a gentle walk in beautiful surroundings. I can't recommend this place enough.. We will be back, if you'll have us! :-)
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We would love to have you all back. I like to cook, and feel anyone coming to stay should be able to do so too, and hence the well equipped kitchen. Of course there are lots of great places locally to eat, so all options catered for. We have been wondering about having part of the field for guests to exercise their dogs, where they can be shut off from the rest of the field, I will look in to it now after your comments. Thank you again, and come back any time, you are all always welcome.
Very friendly hosts.
Perfect weather, the house is a real retreat, at the end of a long days outing.
Fabulous house for a family to stay in
We had a wonderful time at Hagg End in the Easter holidays. We were a family group of 9 with two daughters and their teenage boys, myself and my husband and my sister in law. The house was perfect for us as there was plenty of space in the huge kitchen/diner and a large lounge with loads of comfy sofas and chairs. There are great walks straight from the front door and with Windermere only a couple of miles away we were well served for shops, cafes and restaurants. The weather was variable but coming back to this lovely house was a treat each day which we very much looked forward to as it was always so warm. The drying room is lovely and spacious and there was plenty of room to dry all our coats and waterproofs. Helen was so helpful when we arrived and showed us around, telling us where everything was and had even ensured we had towels for the dog (who managed to come home muddy most days!) which were invaluable. The slate floor of the kitchen meant we didn't have to worry about coming in through the kitchen as we had also been given mats for the back door which were easily washable. The bedrooms were very comfortable and we all slept well each night. We had a fabulous holiday together and it was great to get together round the large dining table in the kitchen at the end of each day to enjoy a meal and a chat and plan the next day's adventure. I can't recommend this house highly enough as a perfect place which is slightly isolated and has wonderful views to the surrounding countryside but still within easy reach of all the amenities anyone might need. The teenage boys found the trampoline in the front garden great fun to use from time to time and even they couldn't wait to explore the Dales Way which is, literally, outside the door!! There is also a large outdoor area with a table and chairs which we were too busy to use but we did use the little area outside the front door which has an enclosed garden and comfy seats - a treat on a sunny day. Thanks for our lovely holiday, hopefully we'll come back one day soon.
Lovely old cottage
Prior to our arrival Helen was very helpful with local activities we could consider be it wet or dry and she was extremely accommodating on the arrival and departure times which took the pressure off with children.
As soon as we arrived Helen was on site to show us round and went above and beyond with unexpectedly going to town to get us some essentials which we had forgotten which I am very thankful for. Knowing she was there for any little bits was very reassuring, however we thankfully didn’t need anything further and she left us completely to our own devices.
The cottage itself was lovely with large dinning table for entertaining, everything we needed in the kitchen (bar children’s crockery and cutlery which we took) for cooking each night, a large utility room to hang and dry wet muddy clothes and a separate lounge to chill in.
The only downside with young children was no fire guard and very creaky floors, however this was only an issue as our children kept getting up in the night, otherwise it wouldn’t really bother you.
Overall it had everything you needed for a peaceful getaway, with great views and a lovely walk to bowness on Windermere.
Beautiful House and Location
Throughout the run up to our stay Helen answered all my questions promptly and was very helpful and friendly. We booked the house for a special birthday for 4 couples. We wanted somewhere characterful, spacious and in a good easily accessed area in the Lakes, this house ticked all the boxes. We were not disappointed. Helen met us on arrival and gave us all essential info then pretty much left us to it, but being next door we knew where to find her if needed.
You will find the house spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and rooms with lovely fresh towels. The log burner was very welcome in January. We had planned to cook a special Birthday meal whilst there and the kitchen was great for this and for gathering and eating around the large, spacious table together. The house also has a big drying room which again was very useful for wellies and boots and running shoes!
The house is sited right on the Dales Way which we walked one day into Bowness and another to Staveley to the Hawkshead Brewery where we had booked on the tour, this is also recommended.
If you like running the house is in a great spot and we all ventured out for varying lengths of run which did include hills!!
We would definitely stay again. Thank you Helen & Petros.
Clean and roomy in a beautiful setting.
Cottage is remotely located in a beautiful setting and the views were particularly stunning one morning when we opened the curtains to find a sprinkling of snow on the ground.
The farmhouse had plenty of room for the 7 of us and was exceptionally clean. Kitchen was well equipped and had a large table that could easily sit 10 people.
Helen was extremely welcoming and was on hand, in the converted barn next door, if we needed anything but very much left us alone unless we asked.
All in all a great family place to stay. Would definitely consider the property again when staying in the Lake District.
