About Jo and John Yates
John and I fell in love with and bought Stone house 11 years ago. We love the outdoors. John trained a graphic artist and taught Art, before working as a professional international mountain guide for 12 years and finally coming indoors, providing IT resourcing and strategy for schools. I trained as an engineering geologist, working for 5 years as an outdoor instructor and then as an HR professional for 20 years. I also recently stopped to enjoy a life of busy leisure! We fill our time very easily! We enjoy it when guests have a wonderful and peaceful break. You will only see us if you need us, and are always happy to give ideas, advice on what you can do.
Jo and John Yates purchased this Barn in 2004
Why Jo and John Yates chose Middlesbrough
The NY Moors national park is a stunning and varied area to explore with so much to see and do. Visit ancient market towns with restaurants, farmers markets, inns & tea rooms lining cobbled streets. Or discover stately homes, abbeys, historic castles & splendid gardens. The coast is 45 minutes away, with fossil hunting, surfing & swimming. The walking & mountain biking is fantastic on surprisingly quiet, varied & stunning moorland trails. If you love museums, we are less than an hour to York, where you can visit the Viking and National Railway Museums and a range of theatres. Also Whitby, Beamish, Lightwater Valley, the James Cook Museum, MIMA arts are amongst a long list of other amazing days out. If food is your passion, you have from Whitby Fish & Chips to Michelin star pubs to enjoy.
What makes this Barn unique
8 miles from Helmsley, Stonehouse Barn is nestled peacefully on the moor side above the tiny hamlet of Fangdale Beck. It is surrounded by spectacular views down the valley and up towards the Cleveland Hills. There is immediate access to the moorland footpaths with a wide range of rides or cycles along the many bridleways of the N/York Moors National Park. By separate arrangement, there is land available for grazing up to 4 horses, so you don’t have to leave them behind. Dating back to 1643 this stone barn has been run as 5* accommodation with a premium holiday cottage agency. We are now going solo! Adjoining the original farmhouse, but completely private, exposed stone and oak beams add to the holiday property’s charm and character. You have your own garden & patio with BBQ to relax in.

Calming and enjoyable
A lovely warm welcome and beautiful countryside. Lots of wildlife to watch and we benefited from the peace and quiet. The barn was cosy especially on the rainy days.
Excellent location for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors and coast. Accomodation at Stonehouse Barn was very comfortable and the owners were very friendly and most helpful.
Great cottage in a great location
Remote but fantastic location. Views to die for and with great local walking from the cottage. Helmesley is a lovely local village with a good selection of shops cafes and pubs. Not as big as some cottages we have holidayed at. On suite bedroom was generous, but other two bedrooms were small but functional. That said, we were a family of 5 adults plus child and baby and it worked for us. Our host Jo was great letting us store our bikes and other kit in an adjacent secure store room. Loved the location. Great stay.
Hi there folks thanks for the review. Really glad you enjoyed your stay.
All the best, Jo and John
Superb location ideally placed for exploring the North Yorkshire Moors
A really well appointed holiday let with some phenomenal views. Close to Helmsley. Jo and John could not have been more attentive as owners. Highly recommend.
We are so, so pleased that you guys enjoyed the week and had so many lovely walks too. Thank you for leaving the barn wonderfully tidy and for your very kind review. We hope to see you all again. Warm wishes.
Peace and quite
A very restful week! In amazing countryside! In a cozy home!
We stayed in the property at the end of July and chose it due to its location. The barn had amazing views and our daughters were very impressed wth the variety of wildlife they saw everyday. They loved watching the swallows come in and out of their nest! Jo was on hand when we needed her and made some excellent suggestions for days out including Dalby forest which we all loved! The barn was perfectly located for visits to the railway and Robin's Hood Bay. The village of Helmsley was beautiful and would recommend the Feathers pub and the royal oak for meals! The barn had everything we needed and when the weather was good was a fantastic BBQ garden! Even the dog loved it! We would highly recommend this property, thank you for a lovely stay Jo!

Helmsley has fantastic deli's and butchers, also plenty of places to eat. There is a small but pretty well stocked Coop Supermarket, bakery, small Browns department store, greengrocers etc... There are a number of pubs to eat in, an Indian and Italian restaurant. The market is on Friday.
Your main shop is probably better done in Stokesley, where there is a bigger Coop, or Thirsk where there is a good size Tesco. Tesco, Sainsburys both do home delivery.
There are a number of pubs and restaurants here too, Thai, Indian, Bistro, Chinese.
There are a number of banks in Helmsley and Stokesley, with external ATMs in both towns. They also have post offices, vets, GPS
We love, Rievaulx Abbey, Dalby Forest where there is great mountain biking, bouldering and hiking, Go Ape etc, Castle Howard, Nunnington Hall, Whitby, York museums
