Luxury romantic retreat for 2 people. Awarded SPECIAL PLACE TO STAY BY ALASTAIR SAWDAY'S Visit us at www.crumblecottage.co.uk. for availability and prices. Situated one mile from the ancient market town of Cartmel – home to the racecourse and a few Michelin stars – and on a quiet no-through lane used mostly by walkers and horses, sits a lovely 500-year-old Cumbrian long house and your cottage attached. Lovingly restored by owners, oak beams, shutters, log stove. Smart TV, secure bicycle storage and private parking. Lots of varied quiet walks right from the door. Follow us on Facebook for news and offers and details of our second cottage with hot tub.
Crumble Cottage was a cow shed that we have transformed into a cosy romantic hideaway, full of character with many of the original features such as the oak beams and stonework. We undertook most of the work ourselves and have the scars and stories to prove it. Ask us to tell you the story of the carved stone mantelpiece!
The cottage is set in seven acres of mixed farmland, ancient woodland, water gardens and productive areas where we grow our own fruit and vegetables. In the summer and autumn we ask guests if they would like a complimentary basket of our excess produce. (Please note not always available.)
Sarah is a horticulturalist and garden designer (CHort MCIHort) running her own landscape business from home and when she can escape loves taking people around the gardens.
Stewart works with technology and dementia and spends his spare time restoring vintage cars and bikes and is always delighted to show you his tool box.
Both of us are keen nature lovers and much of the work we do externally encourages wildlife, and our reward has been a huge increase in the diversity of creatures visiting and living here. Including hedgehogs, dragon flies, otters, toads, kingfishers, newts, house martins, swallows, buzzards, bats and owls to name but a few.
Not content with surviving building Crumble Cottage ourselves, this last year we started building Upper Crumble, a similar offer with hot tub in private courtyard, hopefully opening March 2017. Follow us on Facebook for news and special offers.
Sarah Byrne purchased this cottage in 2014
Beautiful quiet and sheltered location being only 3 miles from the sea. The bustling medieval village of Cartmel is only a ten minute walk away. It’s hard to believe sometimes that we are so close to the village when it is so quiet here. We get very little light pollution so star gazing has become another great attraction. We love going to restaurants and are spoilt for choice as we are surrounded by many award winning places to eat. Simon Rogan’s L ’Enclume best restaurant in the UK for the third year is possibly the most well-known. The village also has many other specialist food shops, pubs and cafes.
Luxury peaceful location with lots of walks right from the door and only a mile from sophisticated civilisation.
Very romantic cosy cottage, with log stove, oak beams, crystal chandeliers and shutters at the tiny windows. Secure car park, old bikes to borrow. Owners on site but out of sight.
Our first taste of Crumble - perfectly delicious! We look forward to returning for another helping or two......very soon. Aug 2014 Christina and Terry Dorset.
A perfect place to stay in - the cottage, the village, the hosts were all amazing. Thank you September 2014 Neil and Laria West Midlands.
Fab location, lovely walks from the cottage. Cartmel is a foodies heaven, L'Enclume and Rogan and Co were outstanding. We had a lovely relaxing break. October 2014 Julie and Barry Cheshire.
A quintessentially beautiful white painted cottage for two in Cartmel a short distance- (we walked but taxis are easily available) from the main village and restaurants. A log fire fully stocked for cosy evenings in and a superbly modern bathroom offer the perfect retreat. Sarah and Stewart have prepared a comprehensive guide for local amenities and attractions for days out. We couldn't recommend this cottage highly enough and fully intend to return on our next visit to the Lakes.
Having had a wonderfully relaxing stay over a (very wet!) Christmas, we couldn’t resist returning for another visit to this cosy and charming cottage!
Owners Stewart and Sarah have managed to combine many features of the original character, whilst skillfully incorporating modern conveniences, such as under-floor heating in the bathroom.
Going for a long ramble, even in the rain, in the beautiful rolling countryside was no problem, knowing we could easily use the compact washer/tumble-dryer to dry wet clothes, whilst we basked in the glow of the log stove, enjoying our hot toddies!
Whether using as a base for exploring the south Lakes peninsular, or staying indoors to unwind in the warm, romantic atmosphere, Crumble Cottage is the perfect choice.
We will definatey be returning!
Wow, lovely wee place for two to cosy up and rekindle romance by the log burning stove! We stayed midwinter, but had some glorious days for exploring the super countryside. You can nip over to the Lakes, but really, why bother with the crowds and inevitable traffic congestion? You've lanes and walks to yourself here...plus fabulous Cartmel's just a short stride away. The Priory makes a super visit and then it's an epicurean paradise, from L'Enclume to gastropubs, plus a handful of select shops to browse.
Horsey flutterers will love the racecourse meets (book the cottage EARLY, apparently) and I believe they're now doing a few summer concerts - I saw ads for Jools Holland and Simply Red.
The cottage interior is just gorgeous. Really tasteful and well appointed. Lovely shower. Sweet touches from owners Sarah and Stewart. They made us feel right at home, but then left us to our privacy.
Altogether a gem in the northwest quality self-catering firmament that needs to be discovered!
Wonderful cottage - extremely comfortable, very clean and tidy with a very relaxed feeling about it. All that you need for your stay, oh, lovely and warm too with the wood burning stove!
We had a lovely stay perfect place to come following a busy Christmas and New Year!
Situated in a very quiet and peaceful location the cottage was only a short 5 minutes drive from the centre of Cartmel, as a result we found it perfectly located to explore Cumbria and the Lake District.
Sarah and Stewart were wonderful hosts and the directions given to the cottage were spot on and communication throughout the stay and before was greatly appreciated.
Overall a truly lovely place to stay when needing a little time out.
