Elegant, historic Tuscan Villa. Walled garden, pool, WIFI, modern kitchen
Casa Tolomei is a lovely historic villa located in the well-known spa town of Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany, within easy walking distance of restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets and banks. The leafy walled garden with a pool, palm trees, and olives is a great place to relax, and there's a large, shady terrace adjoining the kitchen for easy al-fresco dining.
We offer exclusive rental of the main floor of the villa (the first upstairs floor), with the garden and pool. It sleeps up to 10 and includes 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms (of which two are en-suites), a modern kitchen, adjoining utility room, secluded dining terrace, snug/TV room, and the large, impressive frescoed living room.
Outside there is a private walled garden on two levels with various trees and plants including palms and olives. Here you will find a gazebo, picnic table, chairs, sun loungers and umbrellas, and the pool located below the impressive stone monument.
A few features at a glance: Wi-fi internet, private walled garden, pool, dining terrace, modern kitchen, washing machine, dishwasher, balcony, TV, DVD.
In the immediate vicinity of the house one can find nature walks (including the Poets' Walk along the river, accessed via steps across the road from the house, and a circuit through the woods which can include the thermal baths at Bagni Caldi) and all facilities such as restaurants, banks and supermarkets. Nearby there are stunning villages nestled among the hills and mountains, the Canyon Park (a well-known adventure park), and a famous ski resort - Abetone. The walled historic centre of Lucca is not to be missed.
The English poets Robert & Elizabeth Barrett-Browning were summer residents in this house during the 1850s, writing many letters and working on their poetry. Later, in the early 1900s, composer Giacomo Puccini was a regular guest as he was a close friend of the owner of the house at that time.
The front facade of the villa is famously decorated with Liberty (Art Nouveau) period frescoes, while the garden facade has the classical period design dating from the 1700-1800s. Inside, several rooms exhibit original antique frescoes, including the stunning grand sala which is entirely covered in frescoes.
Where are we located
We're in the historic centre of Bagni di Lucca, a few steps from all shops and services. A very good cafe is a few doors away and the nearest restaurant is virtually next door. A pleasant park with selection of specimen trees, a fountain and children's play area is across the street. Across the park you will find the entrance to the villa Ada which has a huge outdoor public pool in summer and a heated indoor pool for winter. Across the road, directly in front of the house, is a lane that leads to the riverside walk known as the poets walk, as it was here that English poets Robert and Elizabeth Barrett-Browning used to stroll while staying at the villa.
Thermal and other wellness activities are available at the historic spa establishments in the vicinity. A famous tennis club is a short walk away down the main street. All around you can admire the elegant architecture of this town which was frequented by the aristocracy and celebrities of years gone by.
The well-known and popular Canyon Park (adventure park) is a short drive away.
It's also a perfect starting point for trips to nearby cities such as Lucca, Pisa, Florence, or Viareggio and its beaches.

About Laura & Andy at Casa Tolomei
We live in an independent apartment on the ground floor, together with our three young children, and we're usually available if you need help or advice. Andy is English and Laura is an Italian language teacher who can give private lessons. We speak Italian, English, German, and Spanish.
Why Laura & Andy at Casa Tolomei chose Bagni di Lucca
Casa Tolomei is a very special villa, known to everyone in the area, all of whom seem to have grown up playing inside the house or in the garden. We found the house in a woeful condition and have spent almost 4 years performing a sympathetic restoration, retaining all historic features including ancient tile floors, frescoes, doors and windows, etc. The house is internationally known because the English poets Robert & Elizabeth Barret-Browning were summer residents here in the 1850's and wrote many surviving letters from this address, while working on their poetry. The house contains much reference material concerning the visits of the poets. Furthermore, the world renowned composer Giacomo Puccini was a regular guest as he was the lifelong best friend of the villa's owner Adriano Bastiani. Puccini is known to have slept here in one of guest bedrooms, played piano in the frescoed sala (now known as the Puccini Sala), and played with the children of the family in the garden after arriving in his motor car, of which he was one of the earliest proponents.
What makes this Villa unique
Staying here is an experience in itself. This is an original noble Tuscan villa which allows guests to experience the Dolce Vita lifestyle, thanks to the careful preservation of the original features. Wonderful frescoes adorn the inside and outside of the house - the main facade of the house has had its early Liberty-period frescoes uncovered and retouched during the recent restoration, and several rooms have frescoes on walls and/or ceilngs. The house is located in the historic town centre of Bagni di Lucca, a few steps from the Tourist office, with a lovely cafe a few doors away on one side (serving their freshly made pastries and other treats) and a well-known restaurant virtually next door on the other side. Banks, the bookshop, the newsagent, bars, all the well-known restaurants, the Irish Pub, and supermarkets are all within a few metres. Despite the convenient location, guests will find the split-level garden to be a tranquil and private spot, and from here one can admire the impressive garden monument, the mature palm trees and the neo-classical facade of this side of the Villa which incorporates the original window decorations. In summer there is a pool (5.5 m x 3 m, depth 1.2m) plus tables, chairs and umbrellas. In the immediate vicinity of the house one can find nature walks (including the Poets Walk along the river, accessed via steps across the road from the house) and all services such as restaurants, banks and supermarkets. In the locality there are adventure opportunities such as kayaking, horse-riding and the Canyon Adventure Park.

Thank you so much for your review. We truly enjoyed having your group at Casa Tolomei and we do hope that you will be coming back!
Beautiful villa full of history providing perfect mix of traditional culture & modern convenience.
Casa Tolomei is amazing! A beautiful villa, with amazing frescos both inside and out, and a rich history to match! It is perfectly located in the town so walking to shops, restaurants, bars, gelateria etc. is easy and convenient and it also has a lovely garden so you still feel that you are in the countryside. Although it is a historical building, the rooms are comfortable and the kitchen and bathrooms are modern and very nice. We stayed with 2 families- 4 adults and 5 kids ages 6-14, and had plenty of space and found it super liveable and comfortable.
Laura and Andy are great hosts and made registration and check-in/check-out super easy, even though we had a few complications on our side during the booking process. They were very understanding and accommodating and made booking the holiday as enjoyable as the actual holiday itself.
Everything was fantastic. Highly recommend it.
Thank you for your excellent review - we enjoyed having you as guests and are glad that you enjoyed the villa. We appreciate all your kind comments and hope to welcome you back in the future!
Bagni di Lucca sits at the southern point of the spectacular Garfagnana area with its valleys, hills, mountains, and pretty towns. It's one of the least discovered and yet most wonderful parts of Tuscany. The lovely, quaint hilltop town of Barga is a few kilometers away. The centre of Lucca (a beautiful, historic walled city) is approx 20-25 minutes by car. (there are also direct trains and buses). Mediterranean beaches are 1 hour away. Close by there is a famous adventure park, the "Canyon Park".
