About the property

5 minutes walk to beach, 8 minutes walk to town and 4 minutes walk to Waitrose.

Te Papa is a fully refurbished Victorian terraced property decorated in Farrow & Ball colours,with the intention of being a family home to be shared with visitors so every modern facility has been established to an exceptionally high standard. Prior to purchase, Te Papa was a tired but proud building that deserved love being lavished on it. As a result Te Papa("our place" in Maori) has a new lease on life and welcomes guests.

The kitchen has a 3.5m Corian island where all guests can eat dinner or breakfast or enjoy a drink while food is being prepared. Large comfortable soft leather sofas are there to chill out while having a predinner drink or watching television. This is the heart of Te Papa with Bosche appliances Induction hob and top of the range china, cutlery, glasses and utensils. Built into the Corian island is a pop up power point for laptops and two USB charging points for mobile phones, iPads, etc.

To make this area as cosy as possible in winter, underfloor heating has been provided under the porcelain tiles which keep the floor cool to the touch in the summer. This is necessary as in the summer the sun streams in through the glass roof and warms the kitchen.

Tucked away in a special cupboard is a washing machine and separate condensing dryer along with a butler's sink - should there be any washing required.

Off the kitchen is a door up to the back garden which has outside table and chairs for six. A BBQ(and utensils) and chiminea are also provided for the summer - and not so summery - evenings.

For more formal dining the ground floor with its cast iron and mable fireplaces and original ceiling features, has a separate dining room with a large table to accommodate all guests. Over Christmas and New Year a decorated Christmas tree is provided for atmosphere and to accommodate presents. The other half of the floor has seating for watching DVD's, streaming internet content and watching it projected onto the chimney breast with an effective 73 inch screen.

The first floor has the main bedroom and its ensuite bathroom. The bedroom with bay window has superking size bed and large wardobes with full length mirrors. It is large enough to acccomodate a travel cot which is provided.

The original cast iron and marble fireplace has been retained but not for its original use. There is an iMac to browse the internet as well as a table for work should the need arise.

The ensuite bath room has free standing bathtub as well as a huge shower with Grohe monsoon shower head and WC.

The top floor has two double bedrooms((both with wardrobes) and bunk room with large chest of drawers which share a bathroom with WC and double sized shower with monsoon head.

In keepng the property as carbon neutral as possible the 250L hot water tank is heated by a solar water panel and topped up by the boiler when necessary. The panel is so effective that in the summer the boiler is rarely needed.

Through out Te Papa attention has been paid to details of colour, cusions, bed runners etc to make it as welcoming as coming to your own home. Fluffy towels are provided and duvets are super light and warm while beds have reveived rave reviews for comfort. Features include WiFi in all the bedrooms and CAT5 cabling for even faster internet browsing or doing a spot of work while away. Despite work connections, you should feel at home.

There is on-street parking to the front of the house and a sun trap of a garden to the back with BBQ and chiminea.

Te Papa is only five minutes’ walk to one of many golden sandy beaches, the town centre for shops, bars and restaurants and a quaint cinema showing the latest releases at £4 a ticket! Waitrose is within walking distance as well as the only Royal Harbour in the country with its marina and plenty to see and do just eight minutes walk away. Tennis courts are 5 mknutes walk away.

Further afield, visitors can explore this interesting corner of Kent either by the excellent bus service at the end of the road which easily links Margate (Turner Gallery, Old Town, Antique Shops), Broadstairs (Viking Beach, Morelli’s ice creams, food and folk festivals) to Ramsgate, so you could leave the car behind at the house. We are about 12 minutes’ walk from the main train station so you may not need to bring the car at all!

Te Papa remains a cherished family home so "party" weekends are not envisaged. .

I was born and bred in the deep south of New Zealand and went to University at Otago University in Dunedin(the old name for Edinburgh as it was settled by the Scots).

After University I came to the UK on a two year working holiday for one of the large accounting firms. I am still working and the UK is home now after having lived over half my life here.

Why Mark Scott chose Kent

London life is great but with a small flat, I wanted a place where I could go for the weekend and invite friends to stay with all the comforts of their own home. Somewhere by the sea to remind me of my love of sailing and salty air but close enough to travel on Thursday evening and return for Monday morning.

I saw Te Papa advetised on an auction site, viewed it and fell in love with it.

Ramsgate has grown on me daily from the time I purchased Te Papa with its unique Royal Harbour, restaurants, theater and golden sandy beaches which enable walks around to another of Thanets gems - Broadstairs.

Getting it to the right standard took a long time but the effort and wait is worth it

The neighbours of Te Papa commute daily to London so feel the area is worth it.

What makes this house unique

Te Papa is convenient to rail stations, the beach and town yet not in the crowded town centre with its difficult parking.

The coal bunker has been kept and is ideal for keeping valuable bikes out of the elements as well as out of sight inside the property.

Because Owners Direct have changed their website after we booked we are unable to provide the stars that Te Papa so rightfully deserves.

Te Papa was home to our party of 6 for 1 week. 4 adults and 2 children (15 and 10 years old).

We love this part of Kent and had previously stayed in Broadstairs.

When I first came across this house on Owners Direct, it seemed too good to be true (and that included the price!). I was very pleasantly surprised to find that it was available for my birthday week.

It is clear to see that the owners have extremely high standards. No expense has been spared in the renovation of this period property. This is shown in the top appliances installed, the supremely comfortable bed in the master bedroom(and other bedrooms), the accessories, bathroom fittings, high tech lighting, paintwork, chef's knives in the kitchen, welcome pack (which included a bottle of good quality Prosecco, red wine and a jar full of cookies!). I could go on.

The house is conveniently located within walking distance of the beach and town centre. There is something for everyone in Ramsgate. In addition to spending a couple of days locally, we also walked to Broadstairs, went by bus to Margate, by train to Canterbury and Whitstable.

In the evenings, we would all relax in the kitchen (so thoughtfully laid out). The kids also enjoyed using the wall mounted projector to watch the family friendly films viewed via the Now TV streaming service.

I cannot think of enough superlatives to describe Te Papa. Without doubt, it is the most stylish and relaxing holiday home that we have ever stayed in. It could easily be featured in any top end interiors magazine.

Notes on accommodation: Te Papa was purchased as a run down but proud property in 2013 and a whole year was been spent on renovating it to the highest specification with Farrow & Ball colours. Many of the original features have been retained to retain the feel of a grand Victorian house. The servants bell system has been removed but parts have been kept. Te Papa is a no inside smoking property. Outside: There is also a small garden to the rear of the property for entertaining with BBQ, Chiminea, table and chairs, as well as a washing line. An ideal location to soak up the morning sun while eating croissants, sipping coffee and reading papers or BBQing in the summer evenings. Utility Room: Washing machine, condensing tumble dryer and butler's sink. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed Linen and towels provided as well as a welcome pack with basics like tea, coffee etc. Towels and linen replaced weekly for longer stays. Property also cleaned weekly with longer stays(requires three hours) Other: Disused coal store to keep bicycles inside.

Perfect house - near town centre and the beach! #Family friendly!

We spent a week at Tepapa and we loved it! The house is finished to a very high spec while remaining perfect for a family holiday!

The owner, Mark, has been very nice and helpful! We will come back!

Lovely town house in a good location.

Te Papa is well appointed and beautifully maintained, with a very impressive kitchen. Our week with our children, their partners, and our grandchildren was great fun and very relaxed. The house is comfortable with plenty of space for everyone.

There are plentiful local amenities - a very well-stocked Co-op with good pastries for breakfasts, Waitrose is just down the hill, and we found excellent take-aways (Chinese and Fish and Chips).

Ramsgate's beaches are lovely for family holidays; rock pools at the closer beach, and golden sands at the main beach - which is just a short walk through the town and past the charming harbour. There is an excellent ice-cream shop opposite the harbour.

For those interested in history, just around the corner is the hidden gem of a Pugin church - the shrine of St Augustine.

Another great stay at Te Papa

Another great stay at Te Papa. This time for a long weekend with family. Even better than last time. Ample room for the eight of us for special family birthday celebration. A very comfortable stay

The house is exactly as described. all mod cons and beautifully finished. kitchen is fabulous. lovely bedding and towels provided. Very clean throughout.

Location is great and the loop bus service meant we didn't have to get in the car once!

The owner, Mark is a very welcoming Kiwi and has some great recommendations for places to go.

We have recommended Te Papa to friends and have booked another stay for another family birthday celebration!!!! it becoming a bit of a habit!!

Lovely house close to the town and beach

We used 'Te Papa' for a 3 day weekend break with another family. The property is in beautiful condition with plenty of space for everyone. The bedrooms were fantastic, the kitchen very modern and movie projector in the lounge was a touch of magic. The seafront and beach were a very short walk away. Definitely going to return.

A stunning, well equipped and welcoming home

Mark's warm welcome was very much in-keeping with the character of this lovely home. My wife, our four children, and two in-laws, all had a wonderful stay. The home was clean, had all the mod-cons we could want, and lots of room for us to either get some personal time or be together. A few minutes walk either to the town of Ramsgate or to the sandy beach, was perfect for all of us. I hope to be back there soon. Thanks again, Mark. It was a holiday to remember... in a good way :)

Special interest holidays:

Ramsgate is on a number good cycle trails including the Viking Coastal trail of 32 miles. The trail is generally level and over 50% is off road which is suitable for beginners. Day rides to Margate and back are also enjoyable.

Broadstairs is just over 4km walk around the beach with its food and folk weeks as well as Dickens' festival.

Margate has the Turner museum which is 6kms away or a trip on "the LOOP" which passes within 150m of the front door.


3 minutes walk to the golden sandy beach at Ramsgate. Other clean sandy beaches can be found between Ramsgate and Margate.


By Car - 2 minutes drive off the end of the A299. 20 Miles from Dover and Ferries (26 Miles to Folkstone ferries and Eurotunnel)

By Rail - Ramsgate Rail station with fast service to St Pancras international is 10 minutes walk.

By air - London Gatwick 85 miles and London Heathrow 108 miles. Car essential.


Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate could be thought of as suburbs of Thanet. In passing from one to the other, there is no discernible boundary and it is only outside this small combined area are there green fields.

Broadstairs has many festivals during the year and Dicken's house and Viking Bay.

Margate has the Turner Museum.

Other seaside towns include Whitstable, Deal and Sandwich.

The cathedral city of Canterbury is only 19 Miles distant.
