Quirky, Spacious 'Old Angel' House In Medieval Village Square

Bedrooms 6
Space 2,000 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Sleeps 2-10. 6 bedrooms. 3 bathrooms. Nr Cheddar Gorge. Close Bristol/Bath

Once a 16th century inn, this lovely character house enjoys pride of place in a village Medieval Square. Quirky & homely with wood-burners, rambling garden and oodles of charm, this arty home is in the Mendips, Somerset, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty near renowned Cheddar Gorge & Caves.

Old Angel offers the best of both worlds:stunning countryside in easy reach of two vibrant cities - Bristol & Bath.

The Airport, Wells, Wookey Hole, Glastonbury, Weston-Super-Mare, heritage & nature sites, culture & coast all nearby.

We like to think the Old Angel in Axbridge lives up to its name: an old house with a real sense of history and a decent amount of contemporary comfort!

Artisan and eclectic in style (flagstone & wood floors, a fireplace or two, scattering of beams, stone sinks, Moroccan wet room) there's an emphasis on natural materials, up-cycled and hand built furniture & decor.

Hidden away from the house is a large rear 'secret' garden with steps leading up to various terraces and a sundeck area with lovely views.

There's ample indoor space to relax in peace or enjoy fireside

get-together's in the first floor lounge overlooking the Square.

Spread over three storeys - with three bedrooms on each of the first and top floors - the flexible accommodation happily suits either small or larger numbers of guests.

Feature hand-built kitchen with wood-burner

Adjoining cosy snug room with open fireplace

Upstairs living room with wood-burner, overlooking the Square

Spacious King size bedroom with en-suite bath & walk-in wardrobe

Double bedroom

Single bedroom

Large wet room with 'rain' shower

Generous Super King size bedroom overlooking Square

Bedroom with 'Zip & Link' bed options: as 2 singles or 1 Super King

Single bedroom

Bathroom - enjoy a candlelit bath with Mendip view!

We'd like the house to feel like home-from-home and with a fully equipped kitchen, gas hob/ oven, dishwasher, microwave, washing machine fridge & freezer it's well suited for self-catering.

Eating out is also an easy option as Axbridge itself has three good food-serving pubs and charming tearoom and there's a huge variety of restaurants, cafe's and eateries throughout the area: from great fish & chips to Michelin rated inns.

Not to mention those famous cream teas, Farmers' Markets, cider tasting farms & character rural pubs!

Entrance is directly off The Square, where you can park & unload.

The large secluded back garden is accessed by private alleyway - a throwback to Axbridge's Medieval layout.

You'll pass the Little Angel apartment en route: a small apartment at the rear of the house where a friend sometimes stays. (Accessed by it's own separate entrance via alleyway). There's enough outdoor space for privacy - the whole garden and Mediterranean style courtyard/al fresco dining area is yours to enjoy.

Axbridge offers a real 'has-it-all' location.

With a varied and landscape-rich countryside on the doorstep: Mendip hills, Somerset Levels, gorges, caves, coastline, local reservoir & national cycleway/Strawberry Line track.

Whatever the season it’s a wonderful base to explore the great outdoors for walkers, cyclists, climbers, nature lovers & photographers/painters.

And there's easy access to great cities, culture & buzz:

- Vibrant Bristol is just half an hour away

- Georgian Bath a gorgeous 20 mile drive through Cheddar Gorge and over the Mendips

- Charming Wells, the UK's smallest city with its cathedral, Bishop's Palace and twice weekly markets

- Quirky Glastonbury with its famous Tor, Abbey ruins & Chalice Well

- The natural wonders of Cheddar Gorge & Wookey Hole Caves

- Stonehenge, Exeter & Cardiff are do-able day trips

- Bristol International Airport 9 miles

Three friendly Axbridge pubs/restaurant, all serve meals

Charming tearoom: breakfast, lunch, cream teas

Co-op shop open early to 10pm

King John's Hunting Lodge (Museum)

Local Reservoir popular for walks/jogging

Monthly Saturday Farmers market in Square

Weekly Sunday Cheddar car boot/flea market

About Marianne

Marianne & Simon Garden

We first fell in love with the location - a wonderful and rich variety of landscapes from the Mendip hills, gorges & Somerset Levels - great inspiration for Simon, an exhibiting artist. And close to enjoy the buzz and culture of city life. And then Old Angel cast it's spell on us - a long labour of love. Welcome to our family home!

Stunning quirky house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Old Angel, a gorgeous old townhouse with 3 stories, lots of rooms and a secret garden!!! Decor is so individual and every detail is considered. Fully stocked pantry and kitchen adds to the delightful experience. I would recommend the Old Angel and the quaint village of Axbridge to anyone. Local beaches and Weston Super Mare are all about 1/2 drive. We would quite happily have moved in!!

Beautiful, quirky house

  • 5 of 5

We (a group of 6 on a girly trip) stayed here over the weekend and really enjoyed our stay. Marianne was great communicating with me regarding arrival and departure and Lou who lives at the back of the house met us beforehand. She was very friendly and showed us around. We had a lovely bottle off prosecco waiting for us, which was a welcome surprise! Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind to us, but the garden would have been lovely to sit in with a glass of wine. It was a lot bigger than you expect as it goes really far back. If you have children they would love it too as there is lots of little hidden parts to it for them to explore and a trampoline! The house was very clean and plenty of towels available. Steve, who I believe owns the house with Marianne is an artist and you can really see his influence through the house. It really was a beautiful house and large enough to sleep a big group of you. We mainly stayed in the kitchen and sat around the large table in there playing games, but there was a lovely lounge area on the first floor and snug area next to the kitchen. The kitchen had lots of available crockery/glasses etc and all the necessities including a decent coffee machine. We would really recommend and would love to go again. Thank you Marianne.

Beautiful Edwardian house, full of character, plenty of space and delightful host.

  • 5 of 5

We booked Old Angel House as a venue to leave from for our daughters wedding because of its unique character. It hosted our large family for a week and extra Bridesmaids the night before the big day. The house provided everything you could need for a self catering break with a very well equipped large dining kitchen. There were plenty of towels and bedding and the rooms are spacious with each having its own character. There was more than enough hot water for 10 showers straight after each other on the wedding day.

The photographer found it wonderful for photographing the wedding party get ready in the morning & the Bride leaving from the village square.

The master bedroom complete with dressing room was a fantastic space.

Marianne couldn't have done more to ensure our stay was special including contacting the farmers market the day before to make sure we could park the wedding cars outside on market day. We would definitely use this house again.

Fantastic house, fantastic host and fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful house had everything we were looking for. We were a group of ladies on a mini break away from the husband and kids, so it was a great escape with fantastic pubs on our doorstep and a beautiful garden for sunbathing, as we hit the jackpot with the weather too! The house was exceptionally clean, had everything we could possibly need especially in the kitchen. The beds were super comfy and there was plenty of space for all of us in the living room.

We would definitely book a return trip!

Fantastic, quirky house

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Old Angel over bank holiday weekend. The house is very big and has loads of character. Marianne has provided just about everything you could ever need for your stay. The kids loved exploring the garden and the trampoline was an unexpected bonus!

We had a lovely Sunday lunch at the Oak House in the square and it's also worth checking out the pub quiz at the Lamb on a Sunday!

There's a good walk around the reservoir which is only a few minutes from the house. The kids very much enjoyed falling in :)

I'd highly recommend a stay at the Old Angel.

Fantastic stay.

  • 5 of 5

We were a family group staying a the Old Angel, and we all loved the house which was beautiful, spacious, and quirky. All the rooms were tastefully decorated with lovely pictures and objects. There was something interesting in every corner! Sofas and beds were all comfortable and everything we needed was to be found in the kitchen and other rooms.Everything was clean and of good quality. We were blessed with lovely weather and were able to sit out and eat and drink in the garden area. Everyone commented on how "continental' it felt. Axbridge is a lovely small town with 3 good pubs and also tea shops and good local walks. The walk around the reservoir is especially nice and the surrounding area such as Cheddar Gorge is very attractive with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activity. All the information we needed was provided by Marianne and Lou and we felt well looked after. We had a fantastic weekend stay and hope we shall have the opportunity to return in the future.

The Old Angel is located in the middle of a village Square. Car parking is either in the Square itself or one of two village-owned car parks literally around the corner. All are free, some with a daytime restriction .

To unload/receive supermarket deliveries etc: you can literally pull up directly outside the front door of the house.

The terraced and secluded back garden to the Old Angel is yours to enjoy. You'll pass the Little Angel en route: a garden apartment at the rear of the Old Angel house where friends of ours sometimes stay (own separate entrance via alleyway).

The whole garden is yours to enjoy - it is large enough for privacy. You can also share the courtyard/outdoor dining area near the apartment.

The uphill sloping garden is informal in style with terraces and steps - so do watch yours!
