Overview

About the property

House in Beaumesnil, Vire, Calvados, Normandy, France - Lovely Location - Secluded But Not Isolated

Set at the end of its own lane and in quiet and peaceful countryside, La Maison du Meunier is attached to a 16th Century watermill and is perfectly positioned for a relaxing retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Originally the dairy and accommodation for the mill owner, the house sits in approximately one acre of private land bordered by a river. The land is teeming with wildlife and there are regular sightings of red squirrels, deer, hares and ragondins (coypu). Kingfishers, herons and buzzards are among the many birds you will see. Situated three kilometres from the nearest village where you'll find a boulangerie, boucherie and a small village store. The town of Vire is 15 minutes' drive and has all the facilities you would expect to find - supermarkets, restaurants, bars and a cinema.

About Karen Hetherington

I live in England with my husband Gareth, our ten year old cat and our 14 year old labrador. Although we both work we escape to Normandy as often as possible. We've made some good friends over the years and each time we return it feels like coming home.

Karen Hetherington purchased this house in 2001

Why Karen Hetherington chose Calvados

It took three years of searching before we finally found our perfect property. I think we looked at everything from barns with four walls and no roof to houses that were supposed to have one but invariably didn't! The first time we drove down the lane we knew it was ours.

The surrounding countryside is truly lovely and, although it feels like you're miles from anywhere, civilisation is easily and quickly accessible. You can do as much or as little as you please.

Excellent location & lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

This holiday home is completely tranquil approached via a wooded driveway from the road. It has to be the most relaxing places I have ever stayed with a wealth of wildlife and land surrounding the cottage itself is completely self-contained with everything catered for. The cottage has an abundance of rural French charm and still has the wheel in situ, nestled in beautiful gardens with only the cows for neighbours.

The cottage is within easy access to all major tourist destinations of Mont St Michel, Normandy beaches and Granville all within an hour’s drive. (for the more adventurous there is also Bungee Jumping and a Luge a short distance away!)

Will definitely be returning next year.

Perfect French Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fantastic week here this summer with our young daughter aged 10. The property is decorated in a beautiful french style, with the main bedroom being the highlight as you wake up to wonderful views across the countryside. The property has a lot of land, surrounded by a shallow stream, which we paddled in on hot days and watched the wildlife. It was the perfect place to chill out with a good book, and bottle of local wine (or calvados if you're feeling brave).

Whilst the property feels like the middle of nowhere, the lovely town of Vire is only 10 mins away, where there are supermarkets in addition to typical french shops, all set around a square where you can have a coffee and people watch. Within an hour are the d-day beaches and museums which kept my nerdy boyfriend entertained, and there is even a theme park near Caen, which our 10 year old enjoyed.

This is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful break in rural France, and I would recommend this to anyone wanting somewhere beautiful to relax."
