About James Gush

Hi I am James, married to Sally, we have three grown up children. We bought Island House in 2012 and then spent the next nine months renovating it, it had been in the same family ownership for over 100 years. We have tried to blend old with new, retaining character features such as the beamed ceilings and the granite lintle above the fire place, but adding all the 'creature comforts' you would expect in the 21st century. We have decorated and renewed many items and soft furnishings for 2017 season. We live in Devon, but I was brought up in Cornwall and went to school in Helston. Knowing the area fairly well Porthleven was where we wanted to be and when Island House came up for auction we were there, not for one minute expecting the hammer to go down on my bid! We love going to Island House, visiting as often as possible, and we hope you will like it as much we do.

James Gush purchased this cottage in 2012

Why James Gush chose Porthleven

Porthleven has everything, you can eat out somewhere different every night, and you will not be disappointed. Loe Bar and The Penrose estate are fantastic places to walk or cycle, or go in the other direction towards Penzance, the dramatic cliffs and abandoned engine houses remind you of the regions rich history and mining past.

What makes this cottage unique

Island House is close to the centre of Porthleven, so everything is within a five minute walk, it is virtually detached (just joined to the neighbouring property by it's utility room which is a later addition) this is unusual as the vast majority of the cottages in the conservation area are terraced, with unusal rights of way, shared rear yards and fronting the street. This is not the case with Island House where you open the gate onto your own sunny garden, which is made up of a terrace with table, chairs and parasol, and raised beds with a variety of flowering and sub tropical plants, there are also glimpses of the inner harbour, a path leads to the front door and around the corner to the utility room.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Pringle Family, Hong Kong

"We stayed at Island House in Porthleven this summer and we cannot praise it enough. We were two adults and three children and we had a wonderful time. The location is ideal being so close to the harbour and even though it was peak season parking was no problem. The house has been tastefully decorated, is clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We are already planning our return stay."

Jess, Cecelia and Paddy (From Devon)

We've just spent a long weekend at Island House. The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and furnished, very crisp and clean, fully equipped and there's even an ipod dock! The village and harbour are very picturesque with individual shops and plenty of places to eat out. We will certainly return later in the season. A lovely stay - thank you.

Mr & Mrs Perry, Deal Kent. My wife and I chose Island House as we lived in Porthleven and knew the property, we have stayed in a few properties in the village, your property was perfect in every way and could not fault it; we very much enjoyed our stay and would be glad to visit again'

Carlo and Daniela, Rome, Italy,

'We were happy in your cottage! It is nicely furnished and has everything you need to live comfortably in a house.

Also, we loved the small garden and the laundry was big enough to shelter our bicycles. We think Porthleven is a wonderful place! Much much better than all other places better known or much more promoted in Cornwall.'

Mr Gullis, London. 'Many thanks, I hope very much to return in 2015 having had a marvellous holiday at your lovely property.'

Cosy Island House ideally situated in Porthleven

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our second stay at Island House. As soon as you open the door you feel welcome it’s so well presented, with everything you need.

Island House is ideally located just a few minutes, walk from The Harbour, Beach, Shops and Restaurants its all there without needing to get in the car.

Cornwall offers plenty more to explore just a short drive away. We would love to visit again.

Charming cottage minutes from harbour

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Island House for the October half term. The cottage is beautifully decorated with a lovely sea theme and artwork. It is well equipped and was a good size for us and our two children (aged 5 and 7). They were very happy in the second bedroom where there is a double and a single bed. The location is fantastic – just a couple of minutes’ walk from the picturesque harbour. We ate out at Kota Kai (delicious food and great for kids) and the Ship Inn is exactly the kind of pub you hope to find by the sea in Cornwall. There is also a brilliant fishmonger just down the road so you can rustle up your own tasty dishes too if you please!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review Roy & Irene, and so pleased you enjoyed your stay. I am sorry about the parking issue and have spoken to the neighbour, who said if you stayed again just knock on their door and they would be happy for your son to park on their drive. Best wishes, James

Lovely cottage, well appointed and spotlessly clean despite its age.

  • 4 of 5

The cottage is short walk to the very pretty harbour which has a marvellous selection of shops and eateries. It is a great base for South Cornwall.

Lovely little cottage with smart recent refurb

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week in this recently refurbished cottage. All rooms including bathroom and kitchen are a very high standard. Beds all very comfy and living room just right for 4-5 people. Just a few mins walk into the the main harbour where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants etc. Nice little courtyard garden to sit out. Both pubs around the harbour are OK for drinks and basic pub food, but what makes Porthleven stand out to me is the amount of stunning restaurants on offer. We ate in Kota, Kota-Kai, Amerlies, Sea Drift, Rick Stein - All absolutely stunning, with Kota and Sea Drift coming out as favourites. They all become very busy, so advanced booking is a must. James was very informative and attentive throughout the booking process, so I would recommend to anyone, and would go back and stay again. Finally, go and visit Kynance Cove on the Lizard, one of the worlds amazing beaches that you shouldn't miss.

Perfect house and location for exploring Cornwall

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I had an amazing few days down in Porthleven at Island House. It is set right in the heart of the town, seconds from the harbour, which makes it easy to explore the selection of shops, pubs and restaurants on offer. Try Nauti But Ice for lunches and Kota Kai for dinner! The house itself has got everything you need for a holiday and more. It's facilities were all clean and modern, and the kitchen was very well equipped. There is also a lovely garden that is perfect for sitting out in the morning sun. There are some brilliant coastal walks either side of Porthleven, and the beach around the corner is ideal to have a barbecue in the evening. The owner, James, was very helpful throughout and ensured we had a seamless stay. Would 100% recommend this house to anyone thinking of visiting Cornwall, will definitely be visiting Island House again!
