2 Bedroom Cottage Situated in the Yorkshire Dales yet just 6 miles from the Lake District!
About Chloe Hibberd
My name is Chloe Hibberd and for the past eight years or so, I have developed a real passion for the Lake District and the surrounding Cumbrian countryside. So much so that two years ago I got married to my husband on the banks of Lake Ullswater Having stayed at numerous other holiday cottages, I know what's really important when you are staying - and how important the little touches are! I really try and make sure guests have the best holiday - I have one guest who has just booked their fourth stay! I'm always happy to help if you have any queries whatsoever about the house, the area - or if you just simply want some ideas of things to do throughout your visit. Please do get in touch! :) Chloe x

Why Chloe Hibberd chose Orton
I bought this little cottage because I absolutely fell in love with it! It was the first property I had ever owned and I felt the most immense pride and excitement that I was lucky enough to own a property so close to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. I loved the fact that there is a village pub and lots of walks from the door, but also the ease of access to so many beautiful locations. I also loved the peace and tranquility of the village - you feel like you are stepping back in time. It's such a charming, beautiful village - a little slice of heaven!
What makes this House unique
I am a little biased, of course, but I really feel that South Cottage offers so much more than many cottages. It is a real home from home and has everything you would need to make your holiday special. It is very cosy and welcoming - and the open fire is a real focal point.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Lovely little cottage in a beautiful village.
This Cottage met all our expectations. It was well-equipped, comfortable and cosy, close to amenities. Lovely chocolate shop cafe in village, nearby pub and very well-stocked village store. Easy access to lakes and North Yorkshire, so we had some great days out. The cottage itself is compact, but ideal for two or a couple with a child, we took our granddaughter and it suited our needs perfectly. We hope to return one day.
Thank you so much for your lovely review - you were a pleasure to host and you will be welcome back anytime you wish to stay in the cottage! Chloe x

Cosy little cottage
Small but perfectly formed, a very cosy well equipped cottage, we enjoyed just relaxing and walking round the village. The cottage is perfect for just chilling, Chloe the owner is very friendly and happy to help. The only tiny little nuisance is the fridge being under the stairs- not really a problem unless you drink as much tea as my hubby - forever back and forward for the milk lol, we used our little thermos flask to keep some milk to hand in the kitchen.
The cottage is kept lovely and warm by storage heaters and extra wall heaters so we never used the fire but there was logs and coal available if we wanted to.
We would definitely return and recommend if it's a nice quiet, cosy holiday with a nice pub a couple of cafes and lovely walks on your doorstep
Thank you so much for your review - so glad you enjoyed the cosiness of the cottage! Glad you loved the walks on the doorstep too :) Yes, the fridge is under the stairs, I guess I'm used to it :)) Unfortunately the kitchen doesn't have room for one - it's a bit of a knack trying to get everything to fit and making sure we still stay really well-equipped! So pleased you had fun during your stay though and you'd be welcome back if you want to stay again! Many thanks again, Chloe x
Very quaint and quirky cottage.
Very comfortable cottage. The cottage was immaculate on arrival. We had a hire car and the cottage was a great base to explore the lake district and the dales. Would return in a heart beat. An excellent stay.
Thank you so much for your lovely review - so pleased you enjoyed your stay so much! You will be welcome back anytime, hope you get the chance to come again! Many thanks again, Chloe x

All the very best,
Cosy cottage in beautiful setting
Orton is a great base for exploring the southern lakes and Yorkshire dales and has great charm itself. South cottage is cosy, well equipped and well maintained. The open fire provides entertainment but the storage heaters provide plenty of warmth on the coldest days.
Thank you so much for your review - so pleased you find it such a good spot for visiting the Lakes and Dales!
I'm glad you enjoy the warmth of the cottage - we do have storage heaters but I'm not a fan of them myself, so I have installed ordinary radiators upstairs and downstairs too for extra comfort :))
Hope you manage to come and stay again soon - you're welcome anytime!
All the very best,
Special interest holidays:
The Cumbria/Lake District
Orton is situated just six miles away from the Lake District border and is officially in the Yorkshire Dales.
The area is famous for lakes and mountains and stunning scenery, and Orton is certainly no exception. Even Scotland's only a half an hour away!
There is so much to do in the area, that we're only scratching the surface, but the cottage has a large pack of leaflets for numerous things to do - from walking, horse-riding, golf, cycling, watersports, art galleries, boat cruises, historical houses, family days out. You won't have enough time to do it all!
From the M6, take the turn off at Junction 38. At the roundabout, turn left towards Orton and follow the B6260. After a couple of miles you enter Orton village. Keeping The George Hotel on your left, proceed slowly down the road, past two small turnings on your left and the cottage is in front of you on the left hand side.
There are nearby stations of Oxenholme (Kendal) and Appleby. Taxi services available and good bus links to the village.
WALKING - Orton Scar and Great Asby Scar can be reached from the village, and the countryside surrounding the village has numerous footpaths and pretty lanes to discover.
The Howgills are a popular days walking, with approximately 40 summits - several over 2,000 feet and were favoured by Wainwright. You shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the village of Sedburgh while you're there. A drive from Orton to Sedburgh provides you with stunning mountain views and Dales charm, and a further excursion to Dentdale and the pretty (and popular) village of Dent is well worth it. While in Sedburgh, do visit the Howgills bakery (after you've done your walk of course!) and sample one of their scones - they really are the best we've ever tasted!
RAILWAY TRIP - A trip on the Settle to Carlisle train line gives you one of the most stunning railway trips in Britain. A must do for all the family - try to stop off on the way to visit the villages it stops at for a perfect day out.
GOLF - Riverside Golf Club in Ravenstondale (8 miles) is set in absolutely stunning countryside and new visitors are welcome.
FISHING - available at the River Lune (2 miles) and the Bessy Beck Trout Fishery at Newbiggin-on-Lune.
CYCLING - this is particularly popular in the area - you can plan your own routes using an OS map and meander around the Eden Valley and the Lake District, and venture towards the Dales. The Howgills have mountain bike tracks and Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale offer mountain bike hire, guided trips and refreshments.
HORSE RIDING - Stonetrail Holidays in Ravenstonedale also provide guided horse trekking in the Howgills. Larkrigg Riding School in Kendal offers tuition and hacking in the surrounding countryside.
TENNIS - there is a tennis court in Tebay (2 miles), and another in Ravenstonedale.
BOWLING - a bowling green in Shap (7 miles) and also in Appleby (10 miles)
