We are an American family - originally from San Francisco and Boston - now based in Manhattan. We fell in love with this area when our youngest daughter was one year old and our children have grown up in this house and regard it as a 'home'; as do our grandchildren. After selling our large Boston home, we moved much of the art, antiques & books to the villa and we now spend about a third of the year living at the villa.
Jonathan Cohen purchased this villa in 1989
The countryside around the villa still maintains the character and feel of 'old Tuscany' with chestnut forests with porcini mushrooms and wild boar; wonderful hill-towns, pristine air and water and local residents preparing traditional foods. Bagni di Lucca - sited on the banks of the Serchio river - has been a place of retreat for a variety of European writers and artists such as Byron, Goethe & the Shelleys... as well as being a fashionable spa town for Russian and English nobility in the 18th & 19th centuries and so has retained a wonderful mixture of architectural styles. Bagni di Lucca is located at the edge of the famous Garfagnana valley (and close to the foothills of the Apuan Alps) with its renowned production of artisanal cheeses, chestnut-flour & mushroom products, fruits & vegetables.
The villa is on a hill about 3km from and 400 metres above - the village. The location adds summer evening breezes to the already pure air, and has panoramic views in all directions --- looking out on forested hillsides, and unique hilltop villages and paved medieval footpaths.
The building's history reflects the love of place from the generations who have lived on - and worked - this land for many hundreds of years. . We've now added our lives and love for this place - along with our art, furniture and books - giving the villa a unique character...a classic Italian country villa, now with all modern conveniences, set in a place of unparalleled peace, beauty and tranquility.
The sense of privacy and quiet - along with spectacular panoramic views - is extraordinary and yet the villa is minutes away from a beautiful local village and only 40 minutes from Lucca itself... with all that that city has to offer. Besides the comfort of the house, the quality of the furnishings, its library and art, the layout of the villa is such that it feels comfortable with just a couple of people, or with a large group as there are numerous indoor and outdoor living areas allowing for both privacy or companionship. From its gymnasium, library, extensive film collection, gourmet kitchen, bocce court, music system, wireless internet, hot-tub and ping-pong table , the villa provides entertainment for every taste --- while the mechanical systems, laundry and kitchens are all completely modern. The pizza oven has been in constant use since 1737 and we like to think imparts a special quality to foods cooked in it. The pool - with its pergolas and dining area - sits on a terrace above the villa and, while totally private, has astonishing views in all directions. The villa produces its own olive oil, honey and - in season - vegetables.
We are 8 adult women who spent an incredible week at Villa Fronzola. The villa is so much more than one would expect from a rental - it is a home, lovingly appointed and with exquisite taste. It includes everything one could want, and more. Alex and Ellen, our own culinarians, were so impressed with the kitchen, the pizza oven, and the gardens that provided many fruits, vegetables and herbs, we thought they would never leave to come back to the states.
Others will praise the villa and its environs, and we would concur. Our greatest praise, however, will be of Alyssia and Simonella, who were more than helpful. Alyssia readily assisted us with a late arrival in the rain, and always responded to our questions. Simonella not only kept us neat and organized, she was a delight to have around, a lovely woman.
We cannot think of anything that was not perfect! Thank you Jonathan and Ellie for providing such a classy environment!
My wife and I stayed in this incredible villa two times. We loved our first stay so much [we were guests in a group with five other couples celebrating a wedding anniversary] that we recruited a different group of six other couples and returned the following year. Both stays left us raving to friends and encouraging them to rent the villa. The villa has so many special features is it difficult to decide which should be at the top of the list.
1. A beautiful salt-water swimming pool, perfectly situated to view the surrounding countryside and cool off on hot days.
2. A huge kitchen with an abundance of utensils and supplies that is perfect for preparing meals with all guests participating without feeling crowded.
3. A brick pizza oven next to the outdoor dining area, making it so convenient to pop the pizzas out of the oven and onto the plates of the diners.
4. A wonderful herb garden right outside the kitchen door.
5. Grape arbors, fruit trees, and berry bushes to pick and enjoy in season [we were there late August].
6. A dining area in front of a huge arching window overlooking the countryside.
7. Available chefs who prepare dinners that are incredible.
8. Beautiful rooms adorned with art and precious objects to admire.
9. Great bedrooms, some with bath ensuite, making for privacy and quietness.
10. Solitude and isolation from the bustle of the world, yet not far away from interesting towns with restaurants, shops, markets.
11. Lots of advice from the caretaker/manager/housekeeper crew.
This place is special and unique. You will enjoy it thoroughly and have many joyous memories to cherish.
My family (10 people total) stayed in magnificent Villa Fronzola for a week this spring, and I cannot possibly put into words how gorgeous Fronzola is. The villa itself is perfectly laid out for a large group - lots of private nooks and areas to give everyone some space, combined with a few huge rooms to gather together for meals and relaxation. The villa is beautifully decorated with stunning art in various media and styles, and the property surrounding the Villa is perfection. The pool is clean and refreshing and you can enjoy beautiful views of the tuscan mountains while you take a dip. And the hot tub is a perfect way to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Fronzola is within a 2 hour drive of many of the wonderful Tuscan attractions (Florence, Lucca, Chianti, etc.), and the village of Bagni di Lucca (above which the villa sits) is absolutely charming.
The villa and the property are beautifully maintained. A cleaning woman came every other day to clean. The property manager was very easy to reach and extremely helpful with recommendations and reservations, etc. We took advantage of some of the recommended services (we had local chefs come in to cook us amazing Tuscan dinners 2 nights, and we had a pizzaiolo come one evening who made delicious homemade pizza in the pizza oven in the courtyard). The love and care with which Fronzola is maintained is obvious, and the privacy and tranquil setting are unmatched.
I highly recommend renting Villa Fronzola. I am counting the months until I can return to the villa for my next vacation!
Outstanding in everyway. We had 12 adults and 3 children under 3 and never felt crowded. The house, grounds, pool, hot tub are all first class. We have 2 chefs and 3 cooks in the group and made use of the terrific kitchen (and outdoor pizza oven) for wonderful meals of garden produce and local meats, seafood, cheese and specalities served in one of 3 dining areas. The manager of the property went out of her way to do everything possible to make the week a great one. If I can ever get the 15 people or others togather again I would love to go back.

The area is renowned for the production of artisinal food and as an outdoor recreational area - particularly for hiking, walking, paragliding, and numerous other outdoor activities. The beginning of the Garfagnana Valley, with numerous famous hill-towns and villages --- which produces some of the best sausage, cheese, wild boar prosciutto, chestnut flour baked goods, honey and other local specialties is just minutes from the villa. Bagni di Lucca is close to the marble quarries of Carrara and the villages of the Cinque Terre. Florence with its art treasures can be reached within 90 minutes. Lucca itself is a unique walled town - essentially closed to traffic - with wonderful architecture, lovely shops and restaurants. One can walk - or bicycle - around the walls, visit Romanesque churches and museums. Surrounding the town are wineries and classic villas and gardens many of which may be visited. Pisa - with its leaning tower is one hour away. The towns of the Cinque Terre - visited by walking along the cliffs or a dedicated small railway must be experienced and the fashionable beaches and restaurants of Forte di Marmi are easily accessible. The marble quarries of Carrara are also well worth a visit. The area is a particularly un-spoilt, traditional part of Tuscany; hunting wild-boar (in season) still occurs in the woods, along with harvesting porcini and chestnuts. It's Tuscany before the advent of mass tourism and agribusiness.
