Mill Barn is a splendid detached stone barn conversion on the edge of Hebden village. The open plan living area has under floor heating and a wood burning stove set in a Yorkshire Stone fireplace, with french doors leading to the patio, perfect for enjoying the peace and tranquillity or for alfresco dining on warmer days. Mill Barn is complemented with a blend of quality furnishings to a high standard creating a warm and welcoming country retreat. Surrounded by spectacular countryside it is a haven for exploring the delights of this stunning and tranquil area of the Dales with a footpath down to the River Wharfe just a few minutes walk away. Hebden has a country inn serving meals, shop, tea rooms and there is a regular bus service to Grassington just 1 ½ miles away where the quaint cobbled square has an array of quality shops, inns and restaurants. Grassington is host to various cultural events throughout the year including the Grassington Festival in late June and the popular annual Dickensian weekends in December. Situated midway between Skipton and Pateley Bridge in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, the pretty villages of Burnsall and Bolton Abbey are just a few minutes drive away. Malham Cove and Tarn, Kilnsey Crag, Parceval Hall Gardens and Stump Cross Caverns are all within easy driving distance.

About Helen & Gavin Herd

The Mill Barn is owned and run by the Herd family, with day to day running undertaken by myself and my wife Helen.

I work and live on the family dairy farm situated in Hebden village alongside my parents whilst Helen works full time in Skipton as well as taking care of our two young children.

Why Helen & Gavin Herd chose North Yorkshire

Up until 2009 this outlying barn was used to store hay for feeding the sheep and cattle on the family farm but was increasingly redundant given its distance from the main farmstead. Given its proximity to the River Wharfe and its accessibility to the many footpaths, the decision was taken to diversify and convert the barn into a holiday let. After a very busy 9 months (much of the internal work was undertaken by the family) the barn was ‘up and running’ for Christmas 2009 – just!

What makes this barn unique

The Barn is always warm and cosy and its peaceful position means it’s a perfect place to relax. The original beams, large stone fireplace and ‘forking hole’ windows all add character to what is a clean and clutter free property. Every season has its own attractions but Summer is our favourite. The abundance of wildlife on the river (a Kingfisher is regularly spotted), the dairy cows grazing in fields locally (often commented upon by children) and the farmers locally gathering in silage and hay from local meadows.

We were delighted with our stay. The location is perfect, right in the heart of the Dales and the cottage didn't disappoint. Cosy, clean and with everything you could wish for. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and I am sure we will book again.

Cosy and peaceful

I came to the cottage with 2 5 year olds, they loved the place, very homely, quiet and cosy. This place has everything you need including games to entertain. Would definitely come back

Perfect little hide away

The property was dirty had not been cleaned.we only stayed 1 night then found somewhere else

We had no heating and the property was dirty. We only stayed 1 night and had to find somewhere else to stay resulting in extra cost. We have asked for a full refund as we had to pay to stay somewhere else. We have had no reply from the owners which I find is extremely unprofessional

Owner's Response: In response to your review, Heating – the thermostats were turned up the night before but unfortunately this tripped the boiler. We came to the Barn on your return and resolved the issue within 10 minutes, as evidenced by the warmth from the upstairs radiators. Cleaning – the property had been cleaned ahead of your visit and we ask that any prospective guests look at other reviews and make up their own minds if this is justified. Our property is listed with another agent too, and scores 9.8 via the Reevoo rating for cleanliness. Communication – we answered all communications despite the barrage of verbal abuse you gave on the phone and face to face whilst we were fixing the boiler. We immediately emailed to offer you a full refund after your decision to leave and have replied to text messages that were sent. A full refund was processed prior to you writing the review.

Welcoming and well appointed in all respects. We had a very good week.

This is a very nice property in a great location for exploring the Dales. A very nice welcome pack was left for us and was very much appreciated. The kitchen is really well equipped which is especially useful at Christmas. The house was lovely and warm, too. Loads to see and do in the area. We were partly in the area for my mum's birthday and to be with them on Christmas Day so we did not have much time for walking but there are a lot of very nice walks close by. We had a lovely stay and wholeheartedly recommend this cottage.

Peaceful seclusion but very convenient

We would recommend use of a car but several guests have visited using public transport.

Nearest Station - Skipton 9 miles

Bus Service - Hebden to Grassington and onwards to Skipton


Nearest pub, shop and cafe in Hebden is a few minutes walk.

Nearest shopping in Grassington (pubs, restaurants, butchers, deli). Skipton (9 miles) large popular market town with major supermarkets.

Mill Barn is situated in Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The landscape is a mixture of rugged hills, open moorland and beautiful lower valleys and hay meadows. Walkers are spoilt for choice! From the barn you can walk to Grassington along the river side - a charming large village with a cobbled square and many fine pubs and cafes, or head down the river Wharfe to Burnsall and Bolton Abbey.

Children can be kept entertained at our steam railways: Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Hesketh Farm Park is popular with little ones and the exploring the show caves at Stump Cross Caverns and at Ingleton and Clapham can keep the older ones happy. Brimham Rocks keeps children entertained for hours and for something different how about The Forbidden Corner at Middleham, Nr Leyburn.
