Mill Barn is a splendid detached stone barn conversion on the edge of Hebden village. The open plan living area has under floor heating and a wood burning stove set in a Yorkshire Stone fireplace, with french doors leading to the patio, perfect for enjoying the peace and tranquillity or for alfresco dining on warmer days. Mill Barn is complemented with a blend of quality furnishings to a high standard creating a warm and welcoming country retreat. Surrounded by spectacular countryside it is a haven for exploring the delights of this stunning and tranquil area of the Dales with a footpath down to the River Wharfe just a few minutes walk away. Hebden has a country inn serving meals, shop, tea rooms and there is a regular bus service to Grassington just 1 ½ miles away where the quaint cobbled square has an array of quality shops, inns and restaurants. Grassington is host to various cultural events throughout the year including the Grassington Festival in late June and the popular annual Dickensian weekends in December. Situated midway between Skipton and Pateley Bridge in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, the pretty villages of Burnsall and Bolton Abbey are just a few minutes drive away. Malham Cove and Tarn, Kilnsey Crag, Parceval Hall Gardens and Stump Cross Caverns are all within easy driving distance.

About Helen & Gavin Herd

The Mill Barn is owned and run by the Herd family, with day to day running undertaken by myself and my wife Helen.

I work and live on the family dairy farm situated in Hebden village alongside my parents whilst Helen works full time in Skipton as well as taking care of our two young children.

Helen & Gavin Herd purchased this barn in 1949

Why Helen & Gavin Herd chose Lancashire

Up until 2009 this outlying barn was used to store hay for feeding the sheep and cattle on the family farm but was increasingly redundant given its distance from the main farmstead. Given its proximity to the River Wharfe and its accessibility to the many footpaths, the decision was taken to diversify and convert the barn into a holiday let. After a very busy 9 months (much of the internal work was undertaken by the family) the barn was ‘up and running’ for Christmas 2009 – just!

What makes this barn unique

The Barn is always warm and cosy and its peaceful position means it’s a perfect place to relax. The original beams, large stone fireplace and ‘forking hole’ windows all add character to what is a clean and clutter free property. Every season has its own attractions but Summer is our favourite. The abundance of wildlife on the river (a Kingfisher is regularly spotted), the dairy cows grazing in fields locally (often commented upon by children) and the farmers locally gathering in silage and hay from local meadows.

Mill Barn was very comfortable and had all we needed except Wi Fi although this is not essential it would be useful. It is in a very good location for walking, and would certainly recomend it to others It would be good to meet the owners on arrival for a chat about the property and the area

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your comments. We will continue to monitor the feedback on WiFi (we've had mixed comments - some prefer to escape whilst others would find it useful). We both work full time and lead a busy family life with young children and cannot guarantee to be available on arrival. We hope, and feel, that the extensive welcome pack and detailed information folder including leaflets for attractions in the local area make up for this.

Fabulous Home from Home

We were last minute booking our mini break and were so fortunate to have found Mill Barn. The cottage is in such a superb location and the owners have made it a real home from home.

We were provided with a fabulous welcome pack (the homemade cake was delicious) and although we arrived on a wintery day the cottage was lovely and warm, such a treat to have under floor heating. There is even a wood burner with logs provided too!

The visitors’ book is full of wonderful reviews and has many helpful suggestions of places to eat and visit. We enjoyed some of the walks in the beautiful countryside, but still have many more to explore. We have already booked our return to Mill Barn later in the year when we hope to take advantage of having breakfast on the patio enjoying the stunning views.

A perfect holiday cottage!

Another lovely week spent at Mill Barn, we have stayed here several times and find it to be a perfect cottage in a perfect location.

The welcome pack was very much appreciated, wine, flowers and even home made cake. The owners are just a phone call away and are always there to help with anything. It's warm and cosy, very clean and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped and there is a lovely outdoor seating area with great views of the beautiful countryside and River Wharfe.

Great location for walks straight from the door.

Looking forward to our next visit and we would highly recommend this cottage!!!

Basic

A disappointing stay overall. No welcome on arrival, (never saw the owners), no heating on when it was snowing outside, beds poor quality together with bedding that was old, shower dribbled out and did not drain away, kitchen saucepans old. Television is old and difficult to find any channels. Needs some money spent on it.

Arrival – we are sorry you felt the need for a personal greeting. We both work full time and have a busy family life and feel that the extensive welcome pack provided more than makes up for this. Heating – this is always turned on ahead of our guest’s arrival. The thermostats and radiators can be adjusted by our guests and we also provided a full basket of logs/kindling for use on the log burning stove. Bedding/Towels – all were new in February 2016. Pans & Crockery – all less than 18 months old and replaced when necessary. Television – 12 months old, replaced for a more user friendly, larger screen TV with over 140 channels. We pride ourselves in the presentation of our holiday cottage and spend considerable time and money to make sure it remains fresh. We have lots of wonderful, positive feedback in our guest book.

A Real Gem

We booked this cottage for a family holiday for a week and absolutely loved it (2 adults and a 15 month old).

The cottage is an ideal size, well appointed and in a superb location. With plenty of beautiful walks from the cottage, it's also well located for short drives to local villages, also beautiful!

Finally, it was very easy to book and pay for the cottage. All in all a great experience.

Spring Visit

A well equipped and cosy cottage which was spotlessly clean on arrival. It is ideally suited to couples or small families. It is situated in a rural location (albeit with the local village about half a mile away) with lovely views stretching down to the River Wharf at the rear of the property. It’s a great base for a walking holiday with many options within a short distance from the cottage. Without hesitation we would recommend the cottage.

Nearest pub, shop and cafe in Hebden is a few minutes walk.

Nearest shopping in Grassington (pubs, restaurants, butchers, deli). Skipton (9 miles) large popular market town with major supermarkets.

Mill Barn is situated in Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The landscape is a mixture of rugged hills, open moorland and beautiful lower valleys and hay meadows. Walkers are spoilt for choice! From the barn you can walk to Grassington along the river side - a charming large village with a cobbled square and many fine pubs and cafes, or head down the river Wharfe to Burnsall and Bolton Abbey.

Children can be kept entertained at our steam railways: Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Hesketh Farm Park is popular with little ones and the exploring the show caves at Stump Cross Caverns and at Ingleton and Clapham can keep the older ones happy. Brimham Rocks keeps children entertained for hours and for something different how about The Forbidden Corner at Middleham, Nr Leyburn.
