About Mark Henderson
Margy and I are from Sydney, Australia and have visited France regularly over the years. When the opportunity arose for both of us to change our careers, we decided to come to France and combine our love of all things French with being able to offer the perfect setting for others to enjoy a wonderful holiday. There is nothing we love more than seeing the expressions on guests' faces when they arrive at Les Capucines as it really is very difficult to convey the luxury and spaciousness of the property with only limited website photos! "The photos and website don't do it justice" is a phrase we so often hear. We certainly aim to over deliver, which we believe is the best way not only to ensure guests return but also have them tell their friends about their great holiday experience.

Why Mark Henderson chose Moragne
When my wife and I were looking for a gite property in 2013 we visited over 25 different complexes all over France. Les Capucines was by far the most luxurious, well equipped and most centrally located property that we visited. The Charente Maritime area of France is the second sunniest (after the Cote d'Azur) as well as being extremely attractive, relatively undiscovered and unspoilt. The range of activities are many and varied and there are so many things to see and do whether you are young or old, active or more relaxed. There are a number of fabulous places to visit - ranging from sandy beaches, to historical towns, to rolling countryside and vineyards. The Charente Maritime is also home to some great local produce - in particular, oysters and shellfish, mussels, Cognac, Pineau Charente, cheese and wine. Les Capucines, is a beautiful old 18th century Charentaise farmhouse which has been lovingly restored and converted into our summer home & luxury holiday property.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Les Capucines is easy to reach by air, sea or road, with most of the budget airlines now flying to La Rochelle from just about everywhere in the UK and Europe and is centrally located to so many places and activities. From the golden beaches of the Atlantic 20 minutes to the west, the historic old towns and villages along the Charente river to the east, to the Chateaux of the Loire to the north as well as the rolling countryside of the Dordogne and the vineyards of Bordeaux to the south ... plus everywhere in between! There is just so much to do for the whole family when you holiday at Les Capucines. Everything is provided for that perfect relaxing holiday, including in-room massage and 'starter supplies' for your cottage when you first really only need to bring your clothes and good company! Les Capucines has continually built a strong following of guests who have come back year after year, some of whom are now seen more as friends than guests.

Perfect venue for our 19-person multi-generational family holiday. Superb weather meant we hardly left the property, except for food shopping! Swimming pool is large and with enough sunbeds and umbrellas for all. Extensive grounds allow scope for games, quiet times under trees and family al fresco eating. The gîtes themselves are all very well equipped and spacious, with enough room in the largest (Le Manoir) for everyone to congregate in the evenings for indoor activities. The hosts, Mark & Margy, couldn't have been more helpful - attentive to our needs without ever being intrusive. We wouldn't hesitate to return if the opportunity arises. Fantastic value for money and a holiday which will last long in the memory.
Looking after your lovely extended family and their wonderful video production was one of the highlights of the season...you are certainly welcome back ANYTIME!

Large family holiday for wedding in region
Wonderful family holiday for wedding in Saintes. We had 25 in our group ranging from 4 to 76! All the houses have great facilities, making it feel like home from home. Mark and Margy go out of their way to make sure that you have everything you need and are full of local knowledge to make your holiday as active as you wish. They were especially helpful when one of the children in our group became ill and needed to visit a doctor. The pool and the well kept gardens were enjoyed by young and old alike and we even managed to bbq and eat together which was lovely. Thanks for a wonderful family holiday, Bernice
Thanks Bernice, I’m glad we could accomodate your special family reunion and that you all enjoyed yourselves.
Thank you also for the box of champagne!

Wonderful farmhouse in a great central location!
Our family, travelling from Boston for a wedding to meet 20 other family members, had such a great experience on our first trip to France. This was mainly due to the accommodation and owners at Les Capucines.
Les Capucines was in a perfect location for seeing many of the regions top destinations. Bordeaux, Cognac, Rochefort, La Rochelle and the stunning island Ile De Re were all short drives away. We were able to see so much more than we anticipated during our two week stay!
When not travelling, we had the pristine Les Capucines to spend our time. The apartments were spotless and had all the comforts of home in a property full of so much character. All of the apartments were much bigger than we had anticipated and we never felt a lack of space. It truly felt like our home for the two weeks. The owners, Mark and Margy, keep the grounds spotless as well as the pool which was always sparkling. Being from the U.S. and knowing only a little French it was SO helpful having the owners help us with our planning even before our arrival. Mark and Margy were always available for questions and their suggestions for scenic destinations and local restaurants (including booking for us) was invaluable and was a significant reason for the great time we had.
Thanks Chris, I’m glad we could be a part of your celebrations and help add to your enjoyment of your first time in France!

The perfect family holiday
Dear Mark and Margy
Thank you both so much for making our holiday so special. We have had the perfect hosts, superb accommodation, a lovely pool and wonderful weather. You always go the extra mile to make our stay so memorable and we really do appreciate it. This annual holiday is so special for us - a chance for grandparents to spend time with children and grandchildren, for siblings to catch up and for cousins to get to know each other. We didn’t want to leave but we are already looking forward to next year.
With very best wishes
Gillian, Peter and family
Thanks Gillian, it was a real pleasure to be able to look after you and your lovely extended family again and we really appreciate your lovely feedback...see you next year!

Les Capucines; a home from home!
This was our second visit to Les Capucines - a homely Charentaise farmhouse (divided into three properties) which accommodated 15 of us with ease. The properties are comfortably furnished, clean and well equipped and Mark and Margy are exceptionally welcoming. Given the extreme heat this year, we spent a lot of our time either in the pool or relaxing beside it - although we still managed a couple of visits to the beach to surf, a trip to Saintes for some retail therapy, a trip to the river at Taillebourg and (for some of us) an afternoon canoeing at Jarnac. Our family party ranged in age from seven to seventy-something and everyone enjoyed themselves; so much so, in fact, that we'll be returning next summer. Les Capucines is a fantastic holiday home-from-home and a great base from which to explore the Charente region.
Thanks Dom, you and your family are always delightful guests and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
Les Capucines is surrounded by lush countryside, fields of sunflowers and is a short distance to local shops and facilities, including 2 fabulous restaurants, one for the whole family (with a kids menu) and one amazing 'silver service' catering for more adult tastes.
Only 10 minutes drive away, there is a very large supermarket where virtually everything is available ... even on a Sunday morning during the summer season!
For those that prefer buying their produce direct and enjoy the colour and buzz of the 'market experience', there are markets on virtually every day somewhere in the area where you can purchase great quality fresh vegetables, fruit, seafood and many other local delicacies.
Also, with Les Capucines being so centrally located, there is an enormous variety of activities and places to visit within easy reach...
To the west, the golden sandy Atlantic beaches are only 20 minutes away, as well as the historic old seaport of La Rochelle and the glamorous islands of Ile de Re, Oleron and Aix.
To the east are the beautiful towns along the Charente river, including the historic old towns of Saintes and Cognac.
A short drive to the north, is the Loire Valley with its magnificent Chateaux
To the south, there are the beautiful rolling countryside of the Dordogne as well as the vineyards of Bordeaux.
So whether you go north, south, east or west - and everywhere in between - there is just so much for the whole family to do and see whilst on holiday at Les Capucines!
Special interest holidays...
The Charente Maritime area is particularly suited to cycling for all ages and ability. There are a number of very scenic cycle tracks available not only locally but also further afield in idyllic settings such as the unique island of Ile de Re, which caters specifically for family cyclists.
Some standard bikes are available for usage in the local area, free of charge. More professional bicycles are also available for hire which can be booked in advance and delivered straight to your door!
The local marshlands are the perfect place for naturalists and birdwatchers alike to spot an amazing variety of flora and fauna, right on the door step.
The scenic countryside all around Les Capucines is also fantastic for long and short walks or more serious hiking.
So there is no excuse not to take in the fresh countryside air and perhaps enjoy a soothing in-room massage, from a fully trained masseuse, on your return?
Being located in such a diverse and interesting area as the Charente Maritime, Les Capucines is the perfect location for family and friends to enjoy an active or more relaxed holiday together, without the crowds and expense that have spoiled the more 'touristy' areas of France!
