About Anita Fenton

My husband and I lived in Jakarta Indonesia for 25 years and bought this ruin as a 'project' which we worked on during our vacations. We enjoyed the rural retreat as a stark contrast to Jakarta's teeming millions. The house has been host to many family and friends and some wonderful memories.

Why Anita Fenton chose Seine-Maritime

If you discount the Channel :-) The houses are in effect incredibly close to England! Just 25 miles to the port of Dieppe. You could cycle there along the flat Avenue Verte cycle path.

The ferry leaves from the port of Newhaven (10 miles from Brighton) and takes 4 hours to Dieppe - or take the ferry from Dover to Calais (90 minutes and then it's a two hour drive.)

It serves as either a Celebration House or a retreat.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The Big House !

There are in fact two houses side by side under one roof in that ''long house'') suitable for expats who are on 'home leave.' A time where you want and need to see 'everybody' - i.e. friends and family but it is physically exhausting to 'make the rounds'. This way the family can all group together and share wonderful French memories at an affordable price.

We stayed with a family of 11 and had a wonderful time. The house is very well equipped and nothing is missing. And what is even more important, really everything works! Nothing out of order. Nice and quiet location with large garden. A house of hearts.

A family holiday in France

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for one week for a family holiday of 10 people, ranging from an 18 month year old toddler to a 94 year old. We needed 7 bedrooms in total and found that this house worked well - in particular the disabled room on the ground floor for the 94 year old. The large garden kept the children happy and the gazebo was a popular feature. It was even hot enough for the children to go in the paddling pool! The large dining table in the conservatory was perfect for long lunches and the kitchen table perfect for late night games of scrabble.

The area is rural and we really liked how peaceful and relaxing the setting was - however it is still close to supermarkets and local A routes allowing easy access to pretty villages and the coast.

The variety of things to do in Normandy really impressed us and we would definitely come again to see/do things we weren't able to do this week.

Delightful, well equipped, comfortable, wonderful location.

  • 5 of 5

Arrived a little (15 minutes early) and the greeter (serin) was there 5 minutes after us. The house was lovely and clean, superbly equipped and nice and comfortable. It is situated down a quiet lane and one day during our stay a pair of horses and a racing gig came down the lane, driven by the friendliest gentlemen who encouraged us onto the gig and to pet the beautiful horses.

We had some wonderful days out, a glass museum in Blagny, a chateaux with the most amazing sculptures in the garden, I think it was called Vascoil, a chateau stuffed full of the most fascinating examples of traditional furniture and home wares, I think that was one was at Martainville, some of our large party went to the beach and when not exploring we made great use of the covered outside seating area. We had two or three barbecues and also ate out sometimes.

A lovely holiday.

I highly recommend it.

Excellent property in a lovely location.

  • 5 of 5

A really nice area of France.

However, the holiday was affected quite significantly by the exceptionally poor weather in France in that week.

The property helped a great deal in that respect. The rooms were warm and airy and there was good light when required.

Beautiful farmhouse to relax with friends and family

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here New Year 2016 with my family and some close friends. The farmhouse is wonderfully spacious - set around an open plan living area with very toasty log fire. The weather wasn't great so we didn't sit outside that much but I imagine the garden is delightful in the summer. Table tennis was a welcome addition to keep us entertained (and keep the children off their iPads). The kitchen was well enough equipped to cook some fabulous feasts. I recommend this house to anyone who wants to relax in a comfortable home, and who enjoys the quiet of the countryside with the benefit of a good local town for shopping six kilometres away.

Lovely, cosy haven in rural France

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful farmhouse set in the French countryside. It has a lovely blend of a traditional cottage feel with a modern twist. We were 9 adults and 3 children and had plenty of space. The bedrooms are roomy, virtually each one with their own bathroom. We loved exploring the area in the day, and warming up by the log fire in the evenings with wine and cheese! The kitchen had all the mod cons you need and the spice drawer/baking cupboard was a great find! Thank you also for providing the delicious welcome pack, it was well received!! We visited Rouen and Dieppe both within easy reach, and we also went to Disneyland for a day, which took about 2.5 hours with traffic. Although it was October, it was still warm enough to sit out in the sunshine in the garden, taking in the lovely view. The children loved the stream nearby and meeting the neighbouring animals, a brown horse was a particular favourite!

Owner's Response: I have been delighted with the positive feedback from all my renters so far. All that effort is finally paying back! We have now purchased a fire pit for the outside patio. Cue : BarBQ - Mulled wine and sausages around the bonfire under the stars ! Magical !

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: ‘’On the road to Rouen’’ is situated in typically picturesque Normandy’s lush green, undulating countryside. 1787 is etched in the lintel above the front door. It was purchased as a complete ruin – no gas, mains water, no electricity, phone nor bathrooms now it has been transformed into 2 (side by side) stunning houses. The ancient and the modern. The magnificent exposed beams have been lovingly restored and now revealed in all their glory. There are 6 double bedrooms and a small study room with 2 bunks. The houses are light, bright, airy and warm ! Conservatory, kitchen diner and lounge make it truly spacious. It is suitable for the elderly and has wheelchair access. The kitchen is fitted out with two dishwashers and two fridge freezers. The house serves as either a Retreat or a Celebration house. The house is not like most gites. We like to provide almost everything that you could need for a self catering holiday. There is even a bread maker. Outside: Large (football field size) lawn /orchard area. Gazebo. Secluded and wind sheltered patio which seats 16 outside the conservatory. ''The Other End'' house has a raised decking patio with pub table.) Bedding is provided and a fee is charged for laundry/cleaning and changeover. A fee of £60 is charged for our caretaker to Meet and Greet and explain how things work. They will also be there for key hand over/change over when you leave
