My husband and I lived in Jakarta Indonesia for 25 years and bought this ruin as a 'project' which we worked on during our vacations. We enjoyed the rural retreat as a stark contrast to Jakarta's teeming millions. The house has been host to many family and friends and some wonderful memories.
If you discount the Channel :-) The houses are in effect incredibly close to England! Just 25 miles to the port of Dieppe. You could cycle there along the flat Avenue Verte cycle path.
The ferry leaves from the port of Newhaven (10 miles from Brighton) and takes 4 hours to Dieppe - or take the ferry from Dover to Calais (90 minutes and then it's a two hour drive.)
It serves as either a Celebration House or a retreat.
The Big House ! Sleeps 14 !
There are in fact two houses side by side under one roof in that ''long house'') suitable for expats who are on 'home leave.' A time where you want and need to see 'everybody' - i.e. friends and family but it is physically exhausting to 'make the rounds'. This way the family can all group together and share wonderful French memories at an affordable price.
Our four families celebrated New Years 2017 at The Big House Normandy - it was great. The house coped well with our requirements, was in a beautiful location and the owner was a pleasure to deal with.
The only slight issue was the power - as it was very cold when we were there we had to use all the electric heaters available which, while using other normal appliances too, kept forcing the main electricity switch to cut out. Not a problem once we found out what was going on and I wouldn't have thought this would be a issue unless the outside temperature is -3 degrees all day (which it was while we were there).
Overall - thoroughly recommended especially for larger family groups.
We stayed with a family of 11 and had a wonderful time. The house is very well equipped and nothing is missing. And what is even more important, really everything works! Nothing out of order. Nice and quiet location with large garden. A house of hearts.
We rented the house for one week for a family holiday of 10 people, ranging from an 18 month year old toddler to a 94 year old. We needed 7 bedrooms in total and found that this house worked well - in particular the disabled room on the ground floor for the 94 year old. The large garden kept the children happy and the gazebo was a popular feature. It was even hot enough for the children to go in the paddling pool! The large dining table in the conservatory was perfect for long lunches and the kitchen table perfect for late night games of scrabble.
The area is rural and we really liked how peaceful and relaxing the setting was - however it is still close to supermarkets and local A routes allowing easy access to pretty villages and the coast.
The variety of things to do in Normandy really impressed us and we would definitely come again to see/do things we weren't able to do this week.
Arrived a little (15 minutes early) and the greeter (serin) was there 5 minutes after us. The house was lovely and clean, superbly equipped and nice and comfortable. It is situated down a quiet lane and one day during our stay a pair of horses and a racing gig came down the lane, driven by the friendliest gentlemen who encouraged us onto the gig and to pet the beautiful horses.
We had some wonderful days out, a glass museum in Blagny, a chateaux with the most amazing sculptures in the garden, I think it was called Vascoil, a chateau stuffed full of the most fascinating examples of traditional furniture and home wares, I think that was one was at Martainville, some of our large party went to the beach and when not exploring we made great use of the covered outside seating area. We had two or three barbecues and also ate out sometimes.
A lovely holiday.
I highly recommend it.
A really nice area of France.
However, the holiday was affected quite significantly by the exceptionally poor weather in France in that week.
The property helped a great deal in that respect. The rooms were warm and airy and there was good light when required.
I stayed here New Year 2016 with my family and some close friends. The farmhouse is wonderfully spacious - set around an open plan living area with very toasty log fire. The weather wasn't great so we didn't sit outside that much but I imagine the garden is delightful in the summer. Table tennis was a welcome addition to keep us entertained (and keep the children off their iPads). The kitchen was well enough equipped to cook some fabulous feasts. I recommend this house to anyone who wants to relax in a comfortable home, and who enjoys the quiet of the countryside with the benefit of a good local town for shopping six kilometres away.
