About Clare Edwards

We have been coming to Barbados for over 40 years now and love coming out to our second home. We never tire of our time spent in Barbados. We hope you feel the same.

Clare Edwards purchased this house in 2014

Why Clare Edwards chose St. James

Our cottage is close to the famous Lone Star Hotel and Restaurant where you can eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. The cocktails are great if you just want a refresher on the beach too. On the same beach and only 5 minutes from the property is JuJu's, a fun beach restaurant that does the best cheese and bacon sandwiches for breakfast or the most amazing fresh fish with hand cut chips for lunch. Plenty of beer, rose or rum punches too, that really pack a punch. We consider this to be the best beach on the west coast. If you want to waterski try Tony the Tiger (Tony has taught all our children to mono ski) who operates from next to JuJu's. He does Mables too. You have the most amazing beach walks from here where you can get around the coastline to Sandpipers depending on the tides or north towards Cobblers Cove. A great way to burn off the rum. There are people who rent paddle boards too and turtles that come into feed so you really won't get bored spending your whole day/holiday here. On the other side of Lone Star there is another beach bar called Santi's. Great fish wraps on the beach, sun beds for hire and cold beers. We are well positioned for bus routes if you haven't hired a car and Holetown is only a short ride away with great shops, bars and restaurants. all in all, a great place to holiday. You can be as busy or as quiet as you want.

We had high hopes from looking at this property on the site and the relevant photos. Our friends are regular visitors to the island and have family there. To begin the way that payment was made meant that we picked up all the banking charges which cost an extra $45. On arrival on Island we called to arrange access and there was confusion and people not aware of our arrival and we had two different stories versions of events. There was not a full set of keys available. This did get resolved to some extent but we never received a key to the safe. The fan was not working in one of the bedrooms and got replaced the next day. The toilet immediately backed up and we had to plunge and clear up the mess. The water was also not flowing from the shower as it should and we identified that the plug hole was blocked with hair. The property smelt very musty and not aired. The kettle was not working but this did get replaced later that day. A number of bulbs were also blown on the premises. We were told that two americans had stayed recently and that the house had been in use! We have booked many villas around the world and we would have expected there to be some basics such as condiments, toilet roll and hand soap but this was not the case. In regards to a quiet location on the whole this is correct but just outside the gate a mechanic carries out repairs from home so on some evenings there was some late night noise from this. He is a very pleasant man and very accommodating.

Overall the property is showing its age and requires some investment. The wicker furniture on the veranda is tired as are the sun loungers to the side of the property with rust and damaged furniture that is unsafe. Internally is a similar situation with items needing to be refreshed. There was no cable TV but not an issue for us, however the Internet was not working which did get resolved the next day when we highlighted that we operated our own businesses in the UK and hence was paramount for us.

The real star of the show is the cleaner who was very hospitable and friendly and did an excellent job. Unfortunately she was not aware of us coming to the property and would have cleaned before our arrival which leads me back to the poor communication between parties highlighted at the start of this review. The location of the property was great the short walk to the beach and a twenty minute walk into town proved excellent and the recommended local hire car worked fantastically.

Two minutes walk from the beach; St James is located on the West Coast of Barbados. Quiet peaceful beaches with no waves and calm crystal clear blue water.

Nearest airport is Grantley Adams International Airport which is 45 minutes by car. Car hire is recommended as the local supermarket is ten minutes by car from the house in Holetown. Although car is not needed to get to the beach.

Nearest town is Holetown which is ten minutes by car. Here you will find a variety of restaurants and bars and a supermarket. Holetown is known for its evening entertainment in first and second street with various lively bars and restaurants. Lime Grove shopping centre has just been built where you will find exclusive shops such as Hugo Boss. Speightstown is the other town following the road along the sea front which is twenty minutes by car. Bridgetown the main town is half an hour by car.

Further Details:

There are many places to visit in Barbados apart from the beach. These include the Barbados Animal Santuary, the East Coast which is stunning and 45 minutes by car, this really is the old Barbados and you can enjoy breathtaking views and deserted hidden beaches along with Bathsheba beach known for surfing with huge waves. Other places to visit are St Nicholas Abbey known for its rum making and the Abbey is an old plantation house to visit where you can learn the history, take a tour and also have some lunch and rum tasting of Barbados. The Harrison caves are in the middle of the island half an hour by car which are amazing for tourists to go and see. Barbados has a lot to offer alongside its beautiful white beaches and many attractions and places of interest.
