About the property

Cottage at Silverdale, Nr. Arnside & Kendal on Cumbria / Lake District border - A haven for wildlife, beautiful woodland walks from the door, 1 mile from coast.

**** Please visit www.silverdale-cottage.co.uk for more detailed description and photos ****

Nestling at the end of a quiet country lane, 200-year old Lake Cottage is located at the centre of the Arnside & Silverdale AONB next to Gait Barrows Nature Reserve. As its name suggests, it has a quite unique location bordering Hawes Water, a natural lake lined with reeds and water lilies and a haven for wildlife. This characterful gamekeeper's cottage offers 2-bedroomed accommodation for 4 with courtyard, sunny garden and boardwalk through reeds to private jetty on lake. Lake Cottage is 1 mile from Silverdale village with shops and pubs and 4 miles to the larger coastal villages of Arnside and nearby Carnforth with pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. The cottage offers doorstep access to many miles of waymarked paths, woodlands, nature reserves and coastline. This limestone area on the edge of Morecambe Bay is a paradise for walkers and nature lovers amidst streams, hazel woods and stone-walled meadows. The Arnside and Silverdale AONB encloses large tracts of National Trust land, nature reserves and bird sanctuaries edging the salt marshes and coves of Morecambe Bay. It is a place of beauty and tranquility that has changed little in decades and offers a welcome respite from the busier, more congested tourism of neighbouring Lakeland. Silverdale sits on the border of Lancashire and Cumbria with the fells of the southern Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland are all within a 30 minute drive.

About Andy M

We bought Lake Cottage in 2011, it had great charm but was in need of complete refurbishment. We have restored the cottage using traditional materials and building methods, replacing the 1960's windows with hardwood sash windows, new septic tank, landscaped the garden and built new limestone walls, created a courtyard and totally refurbished the interior. This has been a painstaking 3 year task, retaining many of the original features that were 'rediscovered' during the building work - inglenooks, beams, etc. It is primarily our own weekend retreat, which we also rent out lightly to new guests as well as an inherited network of existing guests, many of whom have been visiting for over 30 years and treat it as their own!

What makes this cottage unique

Lake Cottage is located at the very centre of the Silverdale & Arnside Area of Natural Beauty, sitting at the end of a quiet lane at the entrance to Gait Barrows Nature reserve. The perfect place for birdwatchers - it's just a short walk to the famous RSPB bird reserve at Leighton Moss, with many rare birds to be seen from our own private hide at the lake edge. For walkers the woodland walks of the Silverdale area are a delight. With our own boardwalk through the reeds to a private jetty on lily-fringed Haweswater lake there can be few more tranquil places for those wanting to simply relax in beautiful surroundings. Quiet, but not secluded, the cottage is within a short drive to the Southern Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Trough of Bowland with many attractions, recreational and sports activities close by. Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Lake Cottage was totally refurbished in 2013-14 with sash windows reinstated, rewired, re-plumbed and re plastered throughout using traditional lime plaster. Many original features have been left exposed including inglenook fireplaces, and beamed ceilings. The cottage is traditionally furnished to restore its character and charm. Situated on the edge of Gait Barrows nature reserve, at the end of a quiet lane next to a working farm with horses, geese, chickens and rare breed pigs. For those looking for a quiet retreat with glorious walks, wildlife and scenery Lake Cottage is the perfect location - 1 mile from the bustling village of Silverdale, on the edge of the Southern Lakes, Yorkshire Dales and Trough of Bowland yet only a mile from the coastal village of Arnside with walks along the limestone cliff coastline. Leighton Moss bird reserve a short walk away and our own garden onto Hawes Water lake is a SSSI with marsh harriers, otters, warblers... it is a quite unique place. Outside: Our South West facing, lawned garden is in the sun from late morning to early sunset with a 'suntrap' courtyard. A seated bench at the front of the cottage onto the lane is our choice for sunny breakfast and morning coffee - the road ends within 10m of the door so there is no passing traffic on the lane, which overlooks a meadow with friendly horses and pigs! There is a BBQ in the courtyard, garden chairs and picnic benches, boardwalk to lakeside jetty with bird hide/nature room. Freshwater swimming in the lake, excellent fishing for specimen tench, roach, rudd and pike. Incredible 180 degree views from the jetty over lake to fields and woods beyond. Amazing wildlife in the garden including marsh harriers, owls, bats, ravens, marsh tits, woodpeckers, buzzards, water rail, warblers, kingfishers... deer not uncommon in the early morning. The cottage is semi-detached but very private and not overlooked by the adjoining property. Utility Room: Open stairs off kitchen to basement garden room with open beams, sofa, dressers, fridge/freezer, sash windows, stable door onto sunny, walled courtyard with planters, BBQ, bench/table. Boiler room off for boots / storage. Note: min. ceiling height 6 ft. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Guests are requested to leave the cottage clean and tidy on departure. This is our own weekend retreat and store cupboards are stocked with all day to day items which you are welcome to use. Linen and towels provided. Other: Lockable garage for bikes / kit; garden shed with loungers, etc. BBQ / table in courtyard, bird feeders and bird hide / nature room on lakeside with veranda. 80m boardwalk through reeds and willows to jetty with magnificent views over lake.

Cosy cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

A week of turning off from the world of wifi distractions and tuning into the beautiful sanctuary of Lake Cottage. Amazing access to the lake. Our kids 7 and 9 loved their dip in Hawes Water with their Dad. Chilly but glorious fun! Such a thrill to walk down the jetty through the reedbeds to the lakeside. So many highlights. Great walks on your doorstep. Feeding the garden birds, sipping G&T by the lake at sunset. Leighton Moss RSPB - great cafe and lovely staff helped us spot the marsh harriers and our first wild otter. Very homely cottage with a fabulous logburner. Shower is superb too - just the ticket after a wet walk! Such a great place to spend a week with my nature loving family. We were all very sad to leave and hope to be back soon.

A fantastic magical place

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at this lovely place for a week and were totally blown away by this beautiful and tranquil location. The house is well equipped and has that "home from home" feel. The lake is amazing and the whole family had fun swimming in it. There are numerous walks and excursions that can be done from the house and it is only about 30 minutes drive from the lakes. I will certainly be going back!

A lovely cottage in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is well equipped, clean and very comfortable. We especially loved the garden which leads to a jetty which gives access to the bird hide and lake. We were lucky to have good weather on our visit and spent the evenings relaxing at the picnic table by the lake. It's a great area for birdwatching with plenty of birds on the feeders in the garden. It is also only a short walk from RSPB Leighton Moss. We spent most of the week around the cottage as there were plenty of lovely walks from the doorstep, including Gait Barrow nature reserve. Andy was extremely helpful and provided lots of information about the area. This was our first visit to Lake Cottage but we definitely hope to visit again.

A charming, well situated cottage

  • 5 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Lake cottage. The location was excellent as was the local environment. Facilities generally good and comfortable. My primary reason for visiting was easy access to the Lake District as ill health prevented me from taking advantage of the many local walks and nature reserves. Would be happy to stay there again.

beautiful, peaceful, perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at lake cottage. It was the exact holiday we had hoped for. The cottage is so rural, quiet, quaint, clean, tidy and surrounded by beautiful wildlife. The owner had recommended some fantastic walks and local pubs. We tried out most of them and loved them! The surrounding villages are so pretty and Lake Windermere is so close we travelled there a few times.

I would definitely recommend staying here and we hope to be back again soon!!

Such a cosy cottage with everything you need. Lake cottage is tucked away down a quiet lane with private access the the lake at the bottom of the garden. The cottage itself has a modern bathroom, cosy beds and a real home feel. We had the most relaxing holiday that I can remember.
