This is a major wine region and a 20 minute ferry ride from Royan takes you down the side of the Gironde through the Medoc region where many famous brands of wines are produced. About Steve Winkel
Loraine and I moved to France in October 2013 when I decided to take early retirement and enjoy a new and relaxing change in lifestyle. Loraine also finished work in the family business running a beautiful four star English hotel. Since arriving in France we have bought, renovated and now run this beautiful gite which has proven very popular and have just completed our fourth year welcoming guests from far and wide. Holidays are for 7 or 14 nights and must commence on a Saturday.
Steve Winkel purchased this Cottage in 2013
Why Steve Winkel chose Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon
We bought this beautiful Maison de Maitre close to Jonzac for its stunning views across the vineyards and sunflower fields and the Gironde Estuary. We particularly liked the fact that it is only 10 minutes from the A10 making it accessible to all the attractions, beaches and wonderful towns and Cities in the location. When driving from England it is very straightforward. Bordeaux airport is less than 60 minutes away and serviced from many UK airports. Car hire is excellent value in France and all the usual car hire companies are located just outside the arrival gates. Holidays are for 7 or 14 nights and must commence on a Saturday.

A Memorable French Pied a Terre
A friend and myself stayed at this pretty Gite in the lovely quiet Bordeaux area for a week in late September. It was truly delightful and very well equipped. The rooms were light and airy, the beds were exceptionally comfortable and the linen was of the finest quality. If you are looking for somewhere with character and comfort you could not do better. Situated centrally to so many fabulous holiday destinations we were able to cover both coastal and inland attractions very easily. Our hosts, Lorraine and Steve were charming and very helpful in every conceivable way without in any way being obtrusive. I would go back there tomorrow given half a chance!
Dear Liz and Emma. It was a delight to have you stay in our gite and we would like to thank you for your review knowing that you both enjoyed your stay here. If you do consider returning in the future let me know and I will start stocking up with chateaux guerry wine. Hope you enjoyed it and it brought back many happy memories. Very best wishes, Steve and Loraine.
Lovely gite that ticks all the boxes
Property is just as described & the photos give a true likeness, what can't be shown is the welcome & care and attention from Steve & Lorraine.
Couldn't have asked for better hosts - nothing too much trouble & they have set up the gite perfectly,
Thank you to them & trust me for a couple this is a perfect little gite to relax in
Perfect getaway in a beautiful part of France
Whilst we have made many trips to France, this was the first time we have stayed in this area and this property provided a perfect base for both exploring and unwinding.
Steve and Loraine are great hosts, with nothing being too much trouble. They were on hand with advice about the local area, from local cognac producers to where to park when we ventured into Bordeaux.
The gite immediately felt like home. It is furnished to a high standard and is very well equipped. The garden is large, beautifully landscaped and has wonderful views out across the nearby vineyards. The main feature, of course, is the fabulous swimming pool which formed the focus of our lazy days basking in the August sunshine.
All in all, a great holiday in a great location - absolutely recommended!
Thank you for your wonderful review and Loraine and I were delighted to welcome you to our home and this part of France. We are thrilled you liked our place and hopefully we will see you in the future for more exploring and relaxing.
A perfect place to relax.
The Gite is very well equipped - the best we've come across in all our years visiting France. Steve and Lorraine are fantastic hosts - informative but not intrusive and obviously wanted us to have the best time. The pool and garden area is beautifully maintained and ideal for spending sunny days relaxing in the peace and quiet. Both Thomas De Conac and Saint Ciers de Taillon are lovely villages with all the amenities you need.
We will definitely return and we can't wait.
Thank you for a wonderful review and we both enjoyed you staying here with us. We very much look forward to you returning next year. Best wishes, Steve and Loraine.
We were contemplating squatters rights at the end of our stay! We travel a lot in France and have stayed in many places - this was one of our favourites. Within easy reach of the A10 but feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, it felt accessible but remote at the same time. While we enjoyed lovely quiet days by the pool, we were able to go the Côte Sauvage, Bordeaux, Saintes amphitheatre, markets - and the huge thermal water park/spa just 20 minutes away in Jonzac was fantastic fun for the family too (especially in cooler weather).
Steve and Lorraine were so welcoming, we never felt as if we made too much noise (we have 12 & 13 year old boys) or imposed on their beautiful garden. The heated pool was fabulous - a godsend as it was a bit cool.
The actual gîte was very well equipped, beautifully decorated, beds were comfortable and it was spotless.
We would return in a heartbeat. Thanks Steve and Lorraine for wonderful memories.
Hello to you all,
Thank you so much for your kind review and Loraine and I were delighted you enjoyed your stay here with us. I agree that there is so much to do here but like you, most people just want to spend time around the pool and chill. Anyway, keep well and we hope to see you again one day. Best wishes, Steve and Loraine. x
