About Steve Winkel

Loraine and I moved to France in October 2013 when I decided to take early retirement and enjoy a new and relaxing change of lifestyle. Loraine also finished work in the family business running a beautiful four star English hotel. Since arriving in France we have bought, renovated and now run this beautiful gite which has proven very popular and we are now in our fourth year.

In March 2016 we decided to purchase a second holiday home which is a fabulous two bedroom apartment in the old historic city of Pezenas in the South of France (situated in the town centre) and this proved to be very popular with tourist from America, Canada, New Zealand, Belgium and the UK when we rented it out. Please take a look at it on owners direct reference 1960576 and as it offers a totally different type of holiday, why not try a two centre holiday with a week in each of the properties.

Holidays are for 7 or 14 nights and must commence on a Saturday.

Steve Winkel purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Steve Winkel chose Jonzac area

We bought this beautiful Maison de Maitre close to Jonzac for its stunning views across the vineyards and sunflower fields and the Gironde Estuary. We particularly liked the fact that it is only 10 minutes from the A10 making it accessible to all the attractions, beaches and wonderful towns and Cities in the location. When driving from England it is very straightforward. Bordeaux airport is less than 60 minutes away and serviced from many UK airports. Car hire is excellent value in France and all the usual car hire companies are located just outside the arrival gates.

Holidays are for 7 or 14 nights and must commence on a Saturday.

What makes this cottage unique

Easy access to main road links but also very close to the tourist routes through stunning countryside. Within reach of Bordeaux, Saintes, La Rochelle, St Emillion, Cognac, Talmont. Royan, St George de Didonne and the Cote de Sauvage and Cote de Beaute.

Easy access to village shops and the real feel of French life close by.

The property is of a very high standard, newly fitted shower room and kitchen. High class bedding, king size beds. The kitchen is fully fitted to enable all cooking to be done with ease. Comfortable lounge area with flat screen TV and a wide range of DVDs and books. Free Wi-Fi.

A fabulous pool 10 x 5 metre with excellent patio and views across the countryside. Full range of garden furniture and sunbeds. BBQ supplied. Lovely tended garden.

Safe and private.

Holidays are for 7 or 14 nights and must commence on a Saturday.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Roberts family: This is a wonderful property and ideally located in the Charente Maritime area. The gite is equipped with everything you could possibly need and the attention to detail is amazing. We spent so much time enjoying the fantastic pool and patio area that we are coming back next year to explore the area a bit more! However having such warm and generous hosts was the highlight of our stay and to see what Steve and Loraine have created in such a short space of time is truly amazing! See you in 2016!!

WOW! Amazing cute - fantastic location. We have had the most relaxing two week break in complete luxury! Thank you so much to you both for giving us a fantastic holiday.

Jim and Sarah August 2014.

We all wish we had another week to explore this beautiful part of France. We loved Jonzac and our evening at the night market, enjoying moules and a French band playing American soul music! great fun. The drive to the Cote Savage was worth it, miles of golden sand and terrific waves. But above all we loved our little gite here in Chez Vieuille, beautifully furnished with everything we could possibly need. Thank you so much Steve and Loraine for making us feel so welcome. We loved talking to you. You are wonderful hosts, so very kind and your house is magnificent. xx

We were contemplating squatters rights at the end of our stay! We travel a lot in France and have stayed in many places - this was one of our favourites. Within easy reach of the A10 but feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, it felt accessible but remote at the same time. While we enjoyed lovely quiet days by the pool, we were able to go the Côte Sauvage, Bordeaux, Saintes amphitheatre, markets - and the huge thermal water park/spa just 20 minutes away in Jonzac was fantastic fun for the family too (especially in cooler weather).

Steve and Lorraine were so welcoming, we never felt as if we made too much noise (we have 12 & 13 year old boys) or imposed on their beautiful garden. The heated pool was fabulous - a godsend as it was a bit cool.

The actual gîte was very well equipped, beautifully decorated, beds were comfortable and it was spotless.

We would return in a heartbeat. Thanks Steve and Lorraine for wonderful memories.

A haven for relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for a fantastic holiday. The Gite was lovely, the gardens beautiful and the pool wonderful. Steve and Lorraine were the perfect hosts, always on hand to offer advise and assistance if required. From the moment we arrived we were blown away by the tranquility and relaxing nature of this property. It's location was perfect for beaches, historic towns and markets. Royan is lovely, Saintes has a great Roman Arena, Blaye has a Citadel and fab Saturday market and Talmont is a lovely village on the estuary- to name but a few. I heartily recommend a stay hear. It's always a gamble when looking at property details and it can take hours of clicking and short listing to come up with potential holiday destinations. Don't worry about this one, it's the real deal. Go for it, you won't be disappointed!

Beautifully appointed, dressed with taste.... simply perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived to a wonderful warm welcome. Because of our late arrival Lorraine kindly made us a delicious supper to eat at our leisure 😊?.

Where to start.... The bedrooms have fabulously comfy beds with beautifully soft pure cotton linen. Fans were provided to help keep us cool at night. Fab bathroom with a decently powdered shower ... which is a great bonus 😉?.

The kitchen is my husband's area and he gave it the thumbs up! Good cooking facilities and utensils. We used washing machine and dishwasher... All making our stay .. just like home.

The lounging area is really comfy... Lots of cushions to laze on. Not that we did much of that as we were blessed with fabulous weather.

I have to add that our daughter and granddaughter accompanied us on our stay. Izzi is 7 yrs old. She loved the garden and the pool but most of all she loved uncle Steve! She was provided with lilos and water squirters and various other games. Not to mention picking cherries from the trees in the garden. 🍒? Totally spoilt!

There are some lovely places to visit nearby and we found a wonderful restaurant "1407" in Mortgage Sur Gironde some 20mins away - well worth a visit if you like good food. 😍?

We loved our stay with Lorraine and Steve... already booked again for next year... two weeks this time.

My advice... book it and enjoy! 🌞?

Totally 5 star!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived after a long journey; it was cloudy, we had driven through a storm and we were both very much under the weather. Steve and Lorraine's welcome lifted our spirits and the freshly baked cake certainly went down well. The welcome pack was perfect, especially the chilled beer and fiz! Their generosity and desire to ensure that we had a good stay extended to offering us a tin of Heinz beans when that was all we really fancied - what more can you ask for!

Our first impressions of the gite were that it was charming and so beautifully decorated and dressed. Huge attention to detail had been paid to ensure that guests are immersed into the "French life" and style. The linens and towels were so crisp and of high quality that going to bed was a luxury. The bed was extremely comfy too - we slept like babes!

As we recovered we appreciated more and more of the facilities. The pool was amazing and the loungers so comfy we decided to spend hours on them! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this gite to fellow travellers. We have been visiting France and staying in gites for over 16 years and this has to be the best we have ever stayed in. 5 star accommodation - definitely! The kitchen is extremely well equipped too, so if you are planning on cooking, everything you need is there.

A beautifully presented and comfortable gite, ideal for a relaxing holiday.

  • 5 of 5

A very comfortable place to stay. Steve and Lorraine go out of their way to be helpful and give advice on local attractions.

There is a wide choice of things to do in the area from country walks to town sightseeing.

The local markets are well worth a visit, the food and drink available in the area is outstanding.

The gite is easy to find yet tucked away from the main highways. The pool is a real treat, clearly Steve's pride and joy, its a great place to relax after a hot day out and about or with a book and glass of wine.

The Gite is equipped with everything needed for holiday catering. The beds are comfy, towels and linen all supplied and replaced when needed. The living/dining room works well and there is a lovely garden for alfresco dinning.
