Spacious Medieval Barn part of Grade 2 listed property near Dartington, South Devon, England - Near Beaches, Rivers and Dartmoor National Park

Gybbes Lodge is a beautiful and spacious medieval barn which forms one side of the courtyard of a very old Devon manor house. It is furnished with antiques in a comfortable and homely style. It is family friendly and there is plenty of space outside for kids to run around and explore.

The property is two miles from the village of Dartington and is also near the historic town of Totnes where there are great shops and restaurants serving everything from Devon cream teas to locally sourced fresh produce. Within easy driving distance there are numerous gorgeous beaches and Dartmoor is only ten minutes away. You can take a boat trip down the river Dart to the pretty town of Dartmouth, you can go sea fishing from Salcombe, walk the South West coastal path or take a steam train along the river Dart.

The area is famous for its delicious food and there are numerous old pubs to discover or seafood restaurants serving local delights of all sorts. There are great farm food shops and cafes with produce direct from local suppliers. There are activities to suit all ages and tastes. The area boasts many historic homes and castles to explore, small coastal villages to potter around, walking to suit all abilities, cycling trails and sailing trips of all kinds. In the summer Dartington also holds literary and music festivals but all year round there are numerous cultural activities going on as the area has a rich history in the arts. Dartington Hall Gardens, which are open to the public, are beautiful all year round.

Gybbes Lodge is part of a historic property listed in the Devon Rural Archives as dating back to the 14th Century. It is rural and peaceful yet close to a wealth of wonderful places to explore.

Thank you Teresa and Jonathan for your warm welcome. We felt very comfortable immediately. The house is wonderfull! Restoration and renovation have been carried out with great care and a lot of taste. Unfortunately we couldn't stay longer. Thank you for your suggestions where to go and what to see. We had a wonderful relaxing weekend at the barn. The barn is beautiful and spacious, and comfortably housed six adults. Towels and linen were top quality and all the beds were so comfy! It's really conveniently located - a 5 min drive from very nice shops and 10 minutes from Totnes and the train station. Teresa was a very welcoming host and was available to answer any queries in the run up to our stay, and as she lives close by was also around while we were there. I would definitely stay again!

A wonderful place to stay. Fantastic open plan living space and 3 beautifully decorated bedrooms with comfortable beds. Teresa had thought about lots of little details- from the cake, juice and milk on arrival, lovely wild flowers on the dining table, good information on the local area and the very well equipped kitchen.

Coast/Beach:

Gybbes Lodge is within driving distance of numerous beautiful beaches. The beaches are approximately 20-40 minutes drive from us and range from town beaches with facilities and shops, a good local surf beach at Bantham and lots of lovely child friendly beaches for paddling and swimming. The South West coastal path will also lead you to less visited coves and glorious coastal scenery.

Travel:

The nearest airport to us is Exeter which is approximately 40 minutes drive away. Bristol airport is about two hours drive. Both are reachable by train from our local station at Totnes. The nearest ferry port is Plymouth. Totnes station is on the main intercity line between London and the South West. It is about 3 hours to London by train. Drive from London 3.5 - 4 hours. There are buses that go past our house to Totnes but a car would be recommended to fully enjoy the local area.

Distances:

Dartington village is about two miles away and has a village shop with post office, garage, bus stop and small shopping complex - The Shops at Dartington.

Totnes is our local town which is about three miles away. This has a large range of shops and restaurants, leisure centre, tourist information and banks.

Further Details:

Totnes is the departure point for River Dart cruises and the Dart Valley steam train. It also has a very picturesque High St and ruined Norman castle, lots of pubs and cafes and waterfront dining. There is a bustling market every Friday.

For seaside towns try Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe. You can take a boat out for a mackerel fishing trip or browse the shops and have fish and chips on the beach. We also suggest a drive up on to Dartmoor simply to admire the spectacular scenery or for a walk or a swim in remote river pools.

Dartington Hall has beautiful gardens and a cafe, bar and restaurant - great for sitting out in the sunshine in the garden of a Medieval house.

For the energetic - try a surf lesson at Bigbury on Sea, or a cycle tour through the woods at Haldon forest.

Totnes is also a centre for all things alternative - you can find yoga classes of all types, massage and a huge range of therapies and treatments on offer.

Excellent long weekend stay

Well equipped kitchen. Comfortable house, beautifully furnished and suitable for all ages( our group included my 18 month old grandson). Very welcoming host and colleagues. Set in a beautiful area - an idyllic getaway spot.

Gorgeous Manor in Devon Countryside

We stayed here for 3 nights in September. The house was spacious and the bedrooms were comfortable. It's an old 15th century house, so there are a few drafts coming in, but we turned up the heating and started the fire, to compensate! It was not a deal breaker for us. Prior to arriving, communication was excellent and we were greeted post arrival, by the lovely Bundle and her daughter, Barley! For the size of the house, I think it's a bargain rental price! We will most definitely keep this property in mind, when returning to Devon. Thanks, Teresa!

Spacious property, great beds, lacks privacy and quietness.

The property is less a lodge, than a large lateral apartment (someone lives in the apartment beneath). The beds are great, the living/dining area spacious. The kitchen is well equipped with a second fridge situated in the seating area. Good information/maps/books etc regarding the area. Good functional base - but not a house to holiday in as such.

Good to Know

The property is located on a busy A-Road. The garden (only partly enclosed) is situated directly next to this road away from the property across a shared car park (used by several residents of the adjoining properties) so lacks privacy and quietness.

Unlike comparable properties in this price range, there was a lack of professional attention to detail and maintenance - only one board game with half its contents missing, only one picture on the wall (in the main bedroom pictured), no dressing tables in any of the rooms, and no shelving for personal items in bathrooms, broken shower attachment, etc. Teresa was not present during our stay, but communicated directly via email and promptly.

Owner's Response: I was saddened to read this review but unsurprised. We obviously hope that everyone who stays with us has a fabulous time and that they will enjoy the property - and we do try very hard to make sure that this is the case as anyone who reads the other reviews will see. We have been full for the whole summer and have had 5 star reviews and happy customers throughout. This guest complained from the moment she arrived and did not find anything positive at all to say during her stay despite our best efforts to attend to all her requests. As a host I am aware that everyone looks for something different in a holiday home and perhaps we cannot please everyone all the time but so far, we seem to have pleased everyone else who has stayed with us over the last three years. To address some of the points : there is a large garden and woods between us and the road. The parking is shared with the Manor only. We have had many, many reviews saying how peaceful it is - so that's a matter of opinion. We don't have dressing tables as we prefer to leave the extra space for guests who come with travel cots for babies [we have thought about this] At least the beds were great...
