Compact, quiet, and comfortable

  • 3 of 5

This is a lovely little cottage set in a superb location with an outlook down the leafy valley. The cottage is generally well appointed and comfortable, and has a big comfy bed.

The garden is private, sunny and secure, and being a dog friendly property, this makes it an ideal garden for dogs.

There is WiFi in the cottage and good phone signal in the area

We found the kitchen facilities rather lacking as the kitchen is dominated by a huge "range" cooker which was of limited use, being slow to heat up, (We couldn't get the hotplates to work). The cottage has two additional gas hobs which were useful, but it does not have any grilling facilities. We enjoy cooking when on holiday so found the cooking facilities limiting.

Kitchen storage comprises of open shelves only, meaning glassware and crockery remains out in the open. There is no covered cupboard storage to put things away, (so nowhere to store food away from doggy noses)

The cottage is advertised as having a freezer, but this is just an "ice box" inside the fridge.

Otherwise the cottage was well presented and very comfortable. It is set up the hill making it a quiet location, yet it is only a few minutes walk into the town centre.

The cottage is in a good location for touring the Cotswold's, and also fairly close to the Mendip's and the Welsh Borders, and also to Bristol and Bath for those wanting to travel a little further afield.

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay at PHC. Nicely secluded in the tree tops it was very peaceful and quiet. Well situated to the bustling little town of Nailsworth, which is just a 3 minute walk away, and a perfect location for sampling the many restaurants that Nailsworth has to offer, all within walking distance of this charming home. We loved the private little courtyard garden, and whiled away many hours sitting admiring the view. Hope to return next year.

Very cute cottage

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pensile Cottage. The cottage was clean, well appointed with an absolutely super bathroom. It is enclosed meaning our dogs could wander safely. I can whole heartedly recommend this cottage for a stay in the Cotswolds.

Map

Travel:

Pensile House Cottage is about 1 hour and 40 minutes from West London, via M4 junction 15 at Swindon, the A417, and Cirencester. Train stations can be fund at Stroud, Kemble and Swindon - with taxis available to Pensile House Cottage taking 10-15 mins, 20-25 mins and 40 mins repectively. Heathrow airport is 90 minutes drive away; while Birmingham is a little closer and Bristol about the same.

Distances:

Cirencester and the rest of the northern Cotrswolds are close-by: 15-20 minutes to Cirencester; 40 minutes to Cheltenham; 40 minutes to Bourton-On-The-Water and 50 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold and Winchcombe. Bath is 35-40 minutes south of Nailsworth - probably the most cosmopolitan shopping out of London.

Further Details:

Nailsworth itself is just 2-3 minutes down Pensile Road and provides plenty of wonderful food and present shopping as well as some great restaurants.

Hobbs House bakery (star of the Fabulous Baker Boys TV show) is just at the bottom of the hill - perfect for your daily bread and all manner of other delights, as well as an upstairs daytime bistro restaurant. Just across the road is Williams - possibly the best deli/fish shop-restaurant in Britain or indeed the world - buy your fish, veg, deli counter staples, or stop by for oysters and champagne for lunch in side their wonderfully atmospheric restaurant or out on the sunny terrace. There are plenty of other restaurants - with Mark @ Street and the Wild Garlic being the pick of the bunch. For coffee, there is also a bit of competition: the Canteen is very special indeed with its amazing decoration and secret courtyard; or just wander around 4 or 5 other independent coffee shops. Or head to Domestic Science an amazing homeware shop (featured regularly in the press), the yellow-tail bookshop or an array of antique and jewellery shops. Or drop in to Raffles Fine Wine for a glass of wine by the fire and to buy your week's individual tipple.

Further afield, Minchinhampton itself and its fantastic 'common' is up the 'ladder' (an alpine zig-zag of a road) from Pensile Road - here for walking, kite-flying and just joyous existence. Stroud with its award winning Saturday morning farmers market and alternative feel has endless possibilities and is just a short 4 mile drive over the common or along the valley below. Or borrow some bikes, and ride along the old railway (now a maintained cycle route) to Stroud in about 30 minutes.
