House near Lucca, Tuscany, Italy - Peaceful Location, Yet Only 15 Minutes To Lucca
Castello is a small hamlet perched on a hillside commanding wonderful views over the Serchio valley. The house overlooks hills, terraced vineyards, olive groves and wooded slopes whilst to the northwest are the high peaks of the Apuan range. Access to Castello is by the narrow, winding road from Valdattovo, a distance of 2kms away. It is off the tourist track in this relatively undiscovered area of Tuscany, but is an excellent base from which to explore all that Tuscany has to offer. The house has been carefully restored over recent years retaining many of the original 18th century features. It is approached by the front stairway to a large balcony from which the entrance to the house leads to an impressive sala, a very spacious and beautifully proportioned room with high beamed ceilings. Eating al fresco is a must from the lovely balcony where you can soak up the magnificent views across the Tuscan countryside.
The house faces the southwest which means that both the private courtyard to the rear of the house and balcony enjoy all day sunshine. Life takes on a different and slower pace at Castello, providing you with the time and space to reconnect with family and the outdoors. Right outside the front door are trails for biking, hiking, or just taking a leisurely walk along the mule paths which were the once the only way to access Castello. Whilst there are no shops or bars in the hamlet of Castello, there is great local food shopping within the towns of Valdottavo and Borgo a Mozzano. The shopping ranges from freshly butchered meat, baked goods, fresh pasta, pizza, and of course local wines.

About Kate Kennally and Rachael Rothero
We live in Cornwall in the UK with two teenage children who love Italy as much as we do. Whilst we do not speak Italian (yet - we are having lessons) we have not found that it is a problem as the local people are only to happy to help you out. What surprised us most is that there is a large Scottish / Italian community in the local area. So don't be surprised to hear a broad Scottish accent including from Elizabeth who looks after our house and you when you are staying at Casa Castello.
Kate Kennally and Rachael Rothero purchased this House in 2014
Why Kate Kennally and Rachael Rothero chose Borgo a Mozzano
We have owned Casa Castello since June 2014 wanting our own piece of Italian heaven. We fell in love with the area after having our first holiday in Italy in 2013 and we think that Casa Castello is the most idyllic spot for winding down and getting rid of the stresses and strains of day to day life. We bought this house from two UK owners who had had the house for 14 years and named it 'il sogno' which in Italian means the dream. We hope that you too will enjoy this beautiful spot, holidaying with us at Casa Castello.
What makes this House unique
The property is ideally situated for a short break or a longer stay, winter or summer. Located just 45 minutes from Pisa Airport (lots of low cost carriers fly here), you can easily get to this charming spot. Lucca, with its complete city walls is 15 minutes away, whilst Florence, Sienna and San Gimignano are reachable from the house. 45 minutes away are the fashionable seaside Tuscan resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio. But closer to home, you can experience the magnificent landscape of the Garfagnana, with scenic mountain walks, the towns of Barga with it's summer music festival and the 19th century elegance of the spa resort of Bagni di Lucca. In winter, Tuscany's largest ski resort at Abetone is 45 minutes away on easily accessible roads.

we had a lovely stay, but would ask that there is better signage to find the property.
Lovely accommodation well equipped and clean and tidy, views outstanding such a restful peaceful stay.
Nice home with stunning views.
Had a wonderful week in this home. The road gets some getting used to but it wasn't a problem. The views were stunning and this location is great for sightseeing in Lucca, the Borga valley (Devil's Bridge) and even Florence. We did have to go out an purchase what I would consider some standard items like dish soap, soap, paper towel and we had to clean a few things. There is no wifi BUT we didn't complain...it truly was a break away from things. Very nice, thank you!
Beautiful Tuscan Hideaway
Having searched for a suitable destination, we happened onto this property in the tiny hamlet of Castello. We wanted "peace and quiet" and we certainly found these here.
There were warnings provided about the road up from the village to Castello, and it was certainly not for the uninitiated. Having driven in Devon and lived in the Derbyshire Peak District, it was easily handled, so don't be put off.
The property was exactly as described and the photographs were true representations of what we found. There is lots of charming character and a "quirkiness" that may cause you to ask "why" when you see some of the construction.
Directions to the property were good, although we did have some difficulty finding the actual "apartment", given that there are in the region of 13 other units in the converted "castle". A slightly more prominent number by the door would have helped.
Inside we found comfortable furnishing and there were adequate utensils in the kitchen, although some of these are somewhat "passed their sell by date" and could do with some replacements. The main bedroom is lovely, but watch your heads, there are some really low beams which caught us out in the first day or so. Also be aware of the big step up into the bedroom, particularly when heading for "rest stop" in the middle of the night! We did light the kitchen fire once, but found it created a smoky atmosphere in the whole house, so relied on the CH for the chill evenings. The bathroom is also adequate, although not large, but a lovely big shower made up for this.
There is a nice selection of music CD's and tapes, plus numerous DVD's if you need to watch TV.
The folder giving property and useful local information was extensive, although somewhat out of date. We were disappointed to not find a guest book, as we'd hoped to view other visitor's suggestions.
We were there in early October and found it really difficult to locate restaurants that were actually open in the smaller towns. This may have been partly due to us not getting into sync with the local habit of closing at the times we were looking! We solved the problem by buying food from the Esselunga supermarket near Lucca, and then taking lunches with us. Occasionally we found a lovely restaurant open and saved our picnics for the next outing. To give us more flexibility, we cooked our evening meals; easier and far cheaper.
At the end of our holiday we both decided that we had made the right choice and would return.
We had a superb holiday here, the house is very nice and comfortable, and the location is splendid!
Incredible location and lovely house
What a great apartment. Loads of room and the views from the terrace in the morning are just incredible. Everything we needed was there and it's just a short drive from Lucca for restaurants and bars. Absolutely nothing bad to say about it. Just perfect.
Beautiful get away from it all location
We had a lovely stay here in the summer, the road there took some getting used to! but was well worth the effort, a spacious comfortable apartment with spectacular views awaited us. We particularly fell in love with Lucca and the swimming pool at Bagni de Lucca
Thank you very much for taking the time to review our property. We are glad you had an enjoyable stay. Best wishes Kate and Rachael
