18th Century Cottage with views and walks

Bedrooms 1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

The cottage is on our small holding which is also home to our goats, sheep, chickens and bees. The cottage is beamed with lots of interesting features. The bedroom has a large double bed and a small double bed. We can also supply a cot and an additional single bed. There is an additional large sofa bed downstairs. The outside seating/eating area is shared with our liveries when they are tacking up to go on a ride. There is a bridle path outside our gate which takes you on walks through fields and woods. We are pet friendly but ask that your dog, should you wish to bring it, is kept on a lead outside the property because of the livestock.

The cottage is 20mins drive from the coast.

The nearest town, Battle, is 1.5 miles away. Battle is the historic site of The Battle of Hastings. It has many good restaurants and cafés and, of course, Battle Abbey.

Other local attractions include Bodiam Castle, Pashley Manor and Bewl Water.

Other interesting towns in the area include Rye, Hastings, Bexhill on Sea, Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells.

London is 1hr and 20mins by train from Battle Station and Brighton is also about 1hr 20 mins by train or 1hr by car.

Glyndebourne Opera house is 1hr drive away.

There are theatres in Hastings and Bexhill.

If you enjoy walking the Hastings Country Park and the South Downs are a must.

Many of the bars in Hastings have live music.

About Virginia Sheldrake

My husband and I are science teachers. We have both left full time teaching. Ted, my husband, now looks after our small holding and I work part time for an educational charity. We have two grown children who are also teachers. Must be in the genes! Ted grew up in Hastings. I grew up in London. We met when he interviewed me for my first teaching post in Hackney, London. We love the area we live in.

Virginia Sheldrake purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Virginia Sheldrake chose Battle

Beautiful cottage, quiet, & gorgeous location.

  • 5 of 5

Couldn't fault the property - it was charming, and beautifully presented throughout. Everything you expect from a cottage in the woods. Location is a few minutes drive from central Battle with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops, and of course Battle Abbey (recommend the audio tour!). Owners are fabulous and really make you feel at home. We fell in love with the two goats Viggo & Orlando who are very friendly and always a welcome face when you wake up & walk out the door! Hastings beach is a short 20 min drive from here too, where we spent Sunday in the sunshine! Plenty to do for a week or a weekend. We will return! Thanks Virginia & Ted xx

Owner's Response: Thank you Katie. What a lovely review. We really enjoyed meeting you both and we hope to see you again. Vigo and Orlando are pining for you. We particularly liked the advice to future guests as to how to cut up the carrots for the goats.
