Welcome to Sycamore Tree Farm, Mallerstang, Cumbria

A Peaceful Country Cottage

Sycamore Tree Farm, Mallerstang, Eden Valley, CumbriaSycamore Tree Farm is an 18th century farmhouse perched high on the Mallerstang fell side with magnificent views over the Eden Valley. The famous Settle-Carlisle railway runs through Mallerstang higher up the fell.

The cottage is at the end of a private road that winds through a working farm up towards the fells - an escape from the stresses of everyday life.

It's a walker’s paradise with immediate access to Wild Boar and the fells. The cottage looks onto the grandeur of High Seat and the famous Howgills are only minutes away.

Sycamore is an ideal spot for bird watchers and nature lovers. There are pheasants, rabbits and red foxes in the garden and the trees behind, and down by the River Eden, our two resident herons.

Entrance hall. Sitting room with beams and open fire. Downstairs toilet. Well equipped farmhouse kitchen. Walk-in pantry. Garden room with patio doors leading to a secluded garden and small beck.

First floor

3 double bedrooms, one of which leads through to another.

Facilities

Electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, kettle, toaster, iron/ironing board, Video/DVD player with TV but please note that there is no TV reception at the farmhouse. Selection of books and walking maps for local areas.

Electricity

is included inthe tariff during the summer months but we ask for an additional £25 from October to May.

Night storage heaters and convector radiators throughout.

Secluded garden set in the Mallerstang fell side.

Parking in barn adjoining house at owner's risk.

Children welcome. Cot available.

Dogs/Pets

We welcome family dogs but dogs and livestock don't always mix. Please do not walk your dogs in a field containing livestock.

Smoking

No smoking in the farm house.

Water Supply

We have our own water supply which comes from a spring on the fells. It is filtered but can become discoloured in rainy weather. You may prefer to use bottled water for drinking.

Arrival/Departure

Friday changeover. Arrival time 3.30pm. Departure time 10am.

Fish for trout from the river bank or go horse riding on the bridle ways that cross the fells.

Golf courses are within half an hour's drive - or if you're feeling adventurous hire a mountain bike or try para-gliding.

The ruin of Pendragon Castle, built in the 12th century and reputed to be the place where Uther Pendragon, King Arthur's father died, is situated within Mallerstang a short walk from Sycamore Tree Farm as is St. Mary's church, in Outhgill, built by Lady Anne Clifford, Lady Anne's Highway, and the famous Andy Galsworthy Pinfold.

Sycamore Tree Farm, Mallerstang, Eden Valley, Cumbria The market town of Kirkby Stephen is about 5 miles away with Hawes, Sedbergh, Kendal, Penrith and Barnard Castle an easy drive. Each of these small towns offers visitors a selection of pubs, restaurants and places of interest together with a variety of shops and activities.

Hawes, in upper Wensleydale, is about a 20 minutes drive. This small market town has been awarded the English Tourist Board Silver Award for 'Best Day Trip out'. It is well worth a visit.

Kendal offers cinema, theatre and other entertainment at the Brewery Arts Centre together with extensive shopping opportunities. St Oswald's church at Ravenstonedale is famous for its triple pulpit, its collegiate pews and the Gilbertine monastic house excavations in its grounds.

A perfect get away

We have just got back from a lovely relaxing stay at Sycamore Tree farm and really wish that we had stayed for longer. With local shops and amenities a short drive away it really is in an idea spot!

A great spot!

Such an amazing location with the most breath taking views.

The cottage itself is perfect for couples, friends and families, It has everything you need and a great kitchen to dine in. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to other people. We will most certainly be back!

Beautiful House, amazing location.

We had an amazing few days staying at Sycamore Tree farm. The cottage was ideal and well equipped and we couldn't have asked for more from its location. Lovely scenic views and a beautiful cottage to relax in after a hard days walking. We can't wait to go back!

Sycamore Tree Farm is situated in the picturesque upper Eden Valley near the source of the River Eden. The Eden Valley is considered by many to be the hidden gem in the crown of Cumbria, a region of outstanding natural beauty. It is less crowded than the nearby Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. With fewer people and less traffic the Eden Valley continues to offer the peace and tranquility lost to other more popular tourist destinations.

The upper Eden Valley offers uncrowded space amidst beautiful rambling countryside with a scattering of villages, some with pubs, some without. The nearest pub to Sycamore Tree Farm serving food is the Moorcock Inn, about 4 miles away, near the famous Ribblehead viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle railway. There are other pubs that serve bar meals and have restaurants at Nateby, Hawes, Ravenstonedale and Kirkby Stephen.

From M6

Exit at J37 & take the A684 to Sedbergh. Continue to Garsdale & Garsdale Head. The road passes under the Settle-Carlisle railway & there is a road leading off to the left (B6259), turn left. After 6 miles there is a road on the left signposted to Shoregill, turn left. Keep left when the road forks over a small bridge & past farm buildings on the left. After passing the farm there is a gate across the road, continue up the hill until Sycamore Tree Farm is reached at the end of the road.

The nearest market town to Sycamore Tree Farm Cottage is Kirkby Stephen, about 5 miles away, where there are a variety of pubs and restaurants offering good dining. There are also many shops supplying groceries, gifts and antiques. There is a Tourist Information Centre. Kirkby Stephen is a recent winner of the Calor 'Best Village in Britain' award.

Ravenstonedale

The picturesque village of Ravenstonedale lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty. While the surroundings are idyllic and offer visitors peace and tranquility Ravenstonedale is an ideal location from which to explore the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

Sedbergh is a small town nestling in a valley at the foot of the Howgill fells. It is becoming increasingly famous as for its annual book festival. Sedbergh is an ideal base from which to explore the Howgill Fells, a compact cluster of hills rising to about 2,000 feet about 40 square miles in area between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

Hill Walking

The Howgill fells are nearby and offer excellent opportunities for walking. The Howgills are less crowded than the central Lake District fells and gradients are not usually as steep. One of Wainwright's books is dedicated to the Howgills. A little further afield are the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks which offer walking amid spectacular scenery.
