Helford Barn Rental Photos and Description

Kestle Barton, Helford River, Cornwall, England

A large award-winning contemporary barn conversion set in an ancient Cornish farmstead. The retreat sleeps eight in comfort and has a spacious living area with well equipped kitchen, a generous dining table and lots of comfy seating — plus exclusive use of a large garden. You'll be close to Frenchman's Creek and numerous beaches.

If you are looking for larger-sized holiday cottage on the Helford with a wow-factor, in an unspoilt location near the coast, and with plenty to do on the doorstep, then Avallen Barn is for you. This is a very special barn in a very special place, with its own large garden opening out to an orchard and wildflower meadows, and a footpath leading in one direction to Helford village, and in the other… to Frenchman’s Creek! Avallen is the largest of a small group of adjoining barns at Kestle Barton, an ancient Cornish farmstead situated above the spectacular Helford River. All of the buildings have been lovingly restored or imaginatively converted to the highest sustainability standards — one is a small, high-quality art gallery. As soon as you arrive, two things will strike you about Avallen Barn. The first is the extraordinary amount of care that has been taken in the conservation. All of the original doors and windows have been cleverly incorporated into the new layout and all of the old hand-cut roofing tiles have been re-used and beautifully re-laid. Secondly, whilst Avallen is historic, it is also stunningly modern, with glass and steel architectural features and abundant technology to cook and entertain with. That ancient and modern can live together so happily is testament to the vision and commitment of the owner, and the skill of the award-winning conservation architect who created this holiday haven.

There are various beaches on the Lizard peninsular ranging form big sandy ones with facilities to tiny quiet ones up tucked-away creeks... Google "Lizard beaches" to find out more about; Kynance Cove, Kennack Sands, Church Cove, Gillan, Cadgwith etc... Helford river with its famous sailing waters are 1 mile by road, less by footpath. You can hire boats across the river at Helford Passage (leave the car and go over on the brilliant little foot-ferry).

20 minutes by car from the traditional market-town of Helston. 40 minutes from nearest train station at Redruth. 1 hour + from Newquay airport, where you can hire a car.

There are two local villages, Helford and Manaccan — both are very beautiful. Helford village is right on the river. It has a brilliant Helford Village Stores with home-made bread, as well as The Shipwrights waterside pub. Manaccan has an excellent deli and stores, The New Inn (good reputation), and South Cafe (popular with both visitors and locals). Both are about a mile from Kestle Avallen. There are good restaurants at Trelowarren, Mawgan-in-Meneague, and Porthleven, from 15-30 minutes away.

Further Details:

As well as Helford and Manaccan, there are numerous other villages on the Lizard peninsular, most of which are picturesque. Plenty have great pubs, cafes, small shops etc. St Anthony is great to hire a boat, St Keverne has a traditional butchers, Lizard village is famous for pasties and gift shops, and Mawgan has a good local store. If you want Sainsburys, Tesco, ATM etc... pop up to Helston, with its 800-year-old charter, it's officially the second oldest town in Cornwall.
