About the property

Barns in Nidderdale, Nr. Harrogate, Yorkshire, England - Secluded, Rural Location, Yet Only 15 Minutes from Harrogate, Stunning Views Over Owners Lake

Mount Bark Farm is a small-holding located in a tranquil corner of picturesque Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Scott and Sarah Fisher have recently completed the conversion of a large barn into two luxurious self-contained cottages on their isolated small-holding. Barn Owl Cottage comfortably sleeps up to seven and Little Owl Cottage offers a romantic retreat for a couple or cosy accommodation for up to four. The original barn dates back to the 1800s and the character of the old stone building is mirrored in the cottages with high, open ceilings and wood beams throughout. The cottages are finished to the highest standards with wood burning stoves and oak floors adding to the feel of real luxury. The cottages are south-facing and enjoy wonderful views over the surrounding countryside and our lake, where you can watch the antics of a wide range of resident and visiting birds. Both cottages have pretty gardens and barbecue areas. An evening stroll up our long private track or a walk through the fields to say goodnight to our Badger Face Sheep can help to round off a busy day. We are sure the cottages will provide everything you need for an enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

About sarah fisher

Hello, we're Scott and Sarah Fisher. We are born and bred in Yorkshire and enjoy the outdoors on our small-holding with our two young daughters, a three-legged Lurcher, elderly Labrador, a mixed-bag of sheep and lots of chickens.

sarah fisher purchased this barn in 2001

Why sarah fisher chose North Yorkshire

We had always wanted to live on a small-holding in beautiful Nidderdale - described as Yorkshire's forgotten dale. Mount Bark Farm was in a sorry state when we bought it. Our water came from a well up on the hill and electricity from a noisy generator. We lived in a static caravan for 2 years and slowly converted the farmhouse and then turned our attention to the old barns. We have converted them into the sort of holiday accommodation we love to stay in, with beams, oak floors and wood-burning stoves. Mount Bark Farm is in a remote rural location, but Harrogate is only 15 minutes drive away, the best of both worlds!

What makes this barn unique

We promise peace and quiet in a secluded, country setting in luxurious barn conversions. Barn Owl Cottage is popular with larger families or groups of friends. Little Owl is ideal for a cosy, romantic getaway for a couple or a real home-from-home for smaller families. You might be visited by our sheep and lambs or witness a fly past by the Barn Owl and Red Kites, or even a Hen Harrier if you're lucky. We're ideally situated for outdoor enthusiasts, with lots of space for bikes, canoes, wind-surfers etc. Outdoor dining over-looking our fields and lake is popular and the deer sometimes make an appearance. We're close enough to civilisation for shopping trips to Harrogate and York. Fountains Abbey, Bolton Abbey, Harlow Carr Gardens, Ilkley and Skipton are on the doorstep.

Beautiful cottage in peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

Little Owl Cottage was very well equipped - everything you could possibly think of included. It was extremely comfortable. The cottage was immaculate. The location was superb - you felt like you were in the middle of nowhere when sitting on the lovely suntrap patio but in actual fact it was very close to Harrogate, Ripon, Skipton as well as loads of villages like Pateley Bridge, Ripley etc There were loads of lovely walks nearby - particularly liked the Fewston Reservoir walk. Loads of places to eat nearby too. All in all a superb place to stay and highly recommended.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you had a relaxing holiday in Little Owl Cottage and you enjoyed the nearby reservoir walks...we often pop down there of an evening and are often rewarded with Kingfishers and Red Kites. We're very proud of Pateley Bridge after it won Best Village High Street of The Year Award and The Tour of Yorkshire pedalled through, albeit at speed, just recently. Thank you for your kind words. accessibility difficult but rather well appointed

  • 3 of 5

A clean, very well equipped little cottage. Thermostat not fully explained. Oil burning boiler with some oily smell in entrance hall. Nice location but half a mile of stony track to get there.

Yorkshire August weather predictably grotty.

Owner's Response: Mr and Mrs Brownridge, thank-you for your review, although we were naturally disappointed to read of your concerns and have looked into these as a matter of urgency. As we are very rural, we can't access mains gas, so oil is our only option. However, all heating, electricity and logs are included so our guests can be as warm as they like, with unlimited hot water. I've checked the Visitors Information folder and can report that the info about how to change the thermostat is all in order. We live next door to Little Owl and I always pop round to say hello to our guests and to emphasize that if there is anything at all they need, just to ring our bell or message me. Our lane is half a mile long, well away from the main road and we maintain it regularly so there are no pot holes or ruts....we are the only property on the lane and our guests enjoy strolling along it to enjoy the views down the Washburn Valley and it's safe for little ones to cycle along. I'm sorry the weather was troublesome, but hopefully it offered a great opportunity to batten down the hatches and get cosy in front of the log burner. Thank you for your feedback to us. Well presented and equiped cottage in excellent decorative order.

We spent a week there late June 2017. The cottage is ideally situated for a number of National Trust properties. Harrogate is close by for shopaholics. We spent a wet Wednesday at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle. Wholeheartedly recommend this property. Brilliant for two, but equally suited to a family of four

It was nice to have the added touches, like salt and pepper, dishwasher tablets and washing machine solution provided. There was also milk. tea, coffee sugar and biscuits, for that much needed drink, on arrival.

The Little Owl Cottage is immaculately kept and has everything you need for your holiday. The cottage is located down a farm track which is well away from the road so the area is very peaceful. Just down the road from Harrogate you have the best of both worlds. Harrogate is a lovely town and the cottage is just by the Nidderdale area of natural outstanding beauty.

Brilliant stay at Little Owl Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Arrived in the morning & unpacked before heading off to Harrogate for the Christmas market. The cottage was warm and cozy on arrival and spotlessly clean! Everything we could possible need was available. Plenty of toilet paper, fluffy white towels, dishwasher tablets etc. Outside there was a plentiful supply of wood and to our surprise the wood burner had been set up for us ready to light, this was a great touch as were not the best at lighting fires but it amazed us how easy it was to keep the fire burning! The view was to die for! Not every day can you say you have chickens rabbits and sheep in your back garden! It was great feeding the chickens and watching them run round with the sheep! The bed was so comfortable with lovely quality linen and the quaint little window alongside meant we could view the animals antics whilst we stayed in bed! My husband was in his element with 3 toilets, 2 baths and 2 showers to choose from! The owners dog Tig was so well behaved, he popped round often ( although I admit I did encourage him to do so!) Our city life is so hectic, Little Owl Cottage provided the perfect retreat to relax. The only negatives are 3 nights are just not long enough also we would have loved an honesty box in the yard so we could buy the lovely free range eggs. Fully recommend this lovely hideaway x

Owner's Response: We're so pleased that you had a restful break in Little Owl Cottage, despite a naughty puppy visiting occasionally! The honesty box for eggs is a great idea; we support the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and egg money would be a good way to raise a little more money for them. We've tried to make a holiday in our cottages as relaxing as possible, so we provide all consumables, like toilet paper and dishwasher tabs etc, so our guests don't have to be bothered with packing these items. We don't like worrying about how much electricity we use when we're away on holiday, so we don't charge our guests any extra, we want you to be warm and snug! Hope to see you again soon! This is a first-rate property, recently fitted out, with brand new 'white goods'--washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, dishwasher, and a huge double oven. The whole place was immaculately clean and obviously well cared for. There is plenty of kitchen equipment and essentials such as foil, clingfilm, washing-up liquid, kitchen towels, etc etc, are lavishly provided. Beds and sofa are very comfortable, and we loved the 'one-touch' table lamps. The countryside setting is very peaceful ,although the views were somewhat restricted by mist and rain! We were glad of the tip about the Wellington pub, as we thought it was excellent. The owners are discreetly low profile but very ready to help if needed. Booking Little Owl with the next-door Barn Owl Cottage was ideal for our family reunion.

Mount Bark Farm is ideally situated for enjoying all that North Yorkshire has to offer. Nidderdale is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a wealth of stunning scenery. We want you to have a super holiday and are happy to point you in the right direction to pursue your chosen activity whether you want an energetic holiday (water sports, caving, horse riding, mountain biking, rock-climbing etc) or a more relaxing break (bird-watching, hiking, fine dining, museums, historic houses and gardens etc). Scott is a keen walker and would be happy to advise you on some of the more remote walks to sites of ancient mines and waterfalls or around our local historic reservoirs. The Yorkshire Dales are close-by and the North York Moors and stunning East Yorkshire coast are within easy reach.

Head east to the beautiful spa town of Harrogate with its elegant facades, theatre culture, cosmopolitan shopping and take tea at Betty’s Tearooms. Enjoy historic York with a walk on the ancient walls and through the fascinating Shambles, discover its viking past and stunning water-fronts, or maybe have a flutter on the horses at the racecourse. Picturesque Ripley village is nearby and we’d recommend exploring Ripley Castle with its interesting and gruesome history followed by a meal at the Boars Head pub and restaurant.

Head south for the lovely market towns of Otley, for a mooch around the jumble of cobbled streets and Ilkley to take a walk on the famous moor, brave a dip at the open-air pool and then enjoy a Fat Rascal! Saltaire model village is a World Heritage site and well worth a visit. A short drive further on takes you to Bronte country and picturesque Haworth with its ethereal moorland. Pop down the motorway to Leeds to explore Yorkshire’s rich textile heritage or visit the Royal Armories and enjoy the diversity of shopping from Harvey Nics to alternative boutiques under the Dark Arches

Westwards will take you to the market town of Skipton, the Gateway to The Dales, to explor
