Located on a working farm within the newly designated International Dark Sky Park - perfect for star gazers and anyone seeking a relaxing countryside break. Ideal for friends sharing or a family holiday,

The Hemmel is located only 15 miles from the Scottish Border and enjoys quick and easy access to many of Northumberland's finest attractions including: Hadrian's Wall; Kielder Water and Forest Park; the Cheviot Hills; and Alnwick Castle and Gardens. Old Town Farm sits on the edge of the Northumberland National Park and within the newly designated International Dark Skies Park. There are a multitude of rural pursuits on the doorstep and the owner is a Massage Therapist with a therapy room conveniently located at Old Town Farm. Treat yourself to a relaxing Hot Stone Massage or an invigorating Thai Massage after a tough day of mountain biking, hill walking, fishing or a round of golf!

The Hemmel has two double bedrooms, one with twin/king-size zip and link bed. The house is on one level (couple of steps) and has a large luxurious bathroom with walk-in shower. There are open beamed ceilings throughout and a modern log burning stove. The living area is open plan but there is also a south-facing entrance hall/sun-room overlooking the grassed courtyard. A large patio takes advantage of fabulous views to the north and west across the Rede Valley. This area gets the morning and evening sun, perfect for morning coffee and summer barbecues. The private garden to the rear of the garden is large and securely fenced for well behaved dogs.

Otterburn village is only 1 mile away and has an excellent village shop. Otterburn Woolen Mill and Country Store has a coffee shop brimming with tasty treats. Locally there are pubs and hotels serving good quality meals and Bellingham village (8 miles) has a wider selection of shops, a bank, excellent Children's playground and petrol station.

I was born and brought up at Old Town Farm, which has been in our family for centuries now! Although I have lived and worked overseas, Otterburn is my home and I cannot imagine living anywhere else in the UK. My family also live on the farm, or nearby, so it is still very much a family concern.

Great Holiday

A well appointed property with all the home from home touches you could want. The property is well maintained and clean. The pictures do not do the setting justice, it has amazing views. We arrived to flowers and home made cakes on the table. The owner is friendly and very helpful and nothing is to much trouble. We found it a great base for visiting many National Trust properties, Keilder, Newcastle and the North East coast. Our nine year old son enjoyed the holiday destination and property so much that he didn't want to leave. The destination and property is ideal for families and couples for short or long stays, we would definitely recommend it. We all enjoyed our stay so much we have booked again for next year.

Home from home with amazing views!

The Hemmel is a home from home with amazing views. Modern, clean, fully equipped, fabulous location for us for a wedding, biking around Kielder, lovely local walks and family so it ticked all our boxes and much more. Kate the owner was amazing and even checked in on our four legged family member while we were at the wedding!!! Simply wonderful and would highly recommend - we will be back.

What a beautiful place !! we stayed one week in The Hemmel and found everything to be just perfect(weather could have been kinder ) Kate the owner was a delight and nothing was too much trouble.Our stay was enhanced by a wonderful hot stone massage given by Kate.Would recommend cottage and massage.

We haven't stayed in this part of Northumberland before and loved it. The Hemmel is a beautiful conversion, spotlessly clean, comfortable, very well equipped with lovely views and host Kate is very friendly and helpful. In ten years this is definitely the best self-catering "cottage" we have stayed in. Lots to do within reach (good weather or otherwise) - the coast & castles, Kielder, National Trust properties, Hadrian's Wall, the Cheviots...we stayed two weeks and, walked 100 miles and could easily have stayed longer. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property and would definitely return.

Excellent holiday home

The Hemmel is absolutely gorgeous and perfect for the relaxing holiday we were looking for. It's spacious, very well designed and patio doors at each side make the living room light and airy.

We were lucky enough to have brilliant weather the week we stayed there, so we were able to spend time in the garden, chilling out and taking in the fantastic views around us.

Kate, the owner, was the perfect host and very helpful when we had any questions.

We had a brilliant time at The Hemmel and would definitely like to stay there again.

Just wonderful!

This is one of the best holiday houses I have ever had the pleasure to stay in. On arrival a plate of home-made scones with jam and fresh cream was waiting for us, and that really set the tone for our stay. The Hemmel is spacious and stylish and has been tastefully and thoughtfully designed with every comfort you could wish for. We didn't want to leave! The owner was friendly and helpful but never intrusive, and we felt very much at home. The location is superb, right in the middle of nowhere in fantastic countryside. There are lots of great walks you can do, and several fine pubs nearby if you don't fancy cooking. We had a very restorative few days - thank you!

Fishing available on the river Rede, a twenty minute walk across farm fields. Guests may fish free of charge and by arrangement with the owner


The closest beach is Druridge Bay just south of Amble and is about a 50 min drive. a fabulous 5 mile stretch of beach, perfect for dog owners!


Newcastle Airport is only 26 miles, Newcastle central train station is 35 miles and the Tynemouth Ferry terminal is about 40 miles. There is a daily bus service from Newcastle/Edinburgh that passes through Otterburn


Otterburn is 1 mile and has an excellent village shop. Otterburn Mill has a large range of outdoor clothing and a coffee shop full of tasty treats and good value lunches

Bellingham is 8 miles and has a reasonable sized Coop, butcher, fruit shop, banks/cash machine, petrol station, 3 pubs/hotels, Chinese take-away, hardware store, craft shop , small local art gallery and bike hire

The Hemmel can be booked online. A bank transfer can be arranged over the phone but credit card payments not yet available unless used via the online booking system which also accepts paypal. Good old fashioned cheques are accepted!. A £100 deposit is taken to confirm the booking and the balance is due 1 month before arriving.

Notes on accommodation: The property shares a communal walled garden with another holiday cottage but there is also a large, securely fenced, private garden where dogs can run. It is available to rent alongside adjoining Nutwell View holiday cottage which sleeps 2 (+ 2 on a comfortable sofa bed) Perfect for extended families or friends holidaying together. An internal door separates the properties so they run together easily.
