Cottage in Romagne, Vienne, Poitou-Charentes, France - Quiet Rural Location But Close To Essential Amenities
Situated in a quiet rural setting Lime Tree Gite is ideal for a family holiday or romantic get-away for two. The owners live next door and are on hand for information or advice. There are six other houses in the hamlet one being a working farm. A short walk takes you into the village centre where you will find a bar/pizza bar and boulangerie, also a post office and hair salon. There are many restaurants in the surrounding area, the nearest being in Sommiers, the next village. The church was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and a previous church is thought to have stood on the same spot. Romagne was a Roman settlement and seven legions were camped nearby. From Poitiers a train ride to Paris takes from 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes depending on time of day. Angouleme is within an easy car drive, another ancient fortified hill town with an excellent shopping centre. Cognac is about 1 hour 15 minutes drive where you can take a trip round one of the many distilleries. There is a large market in Cognac every weekday which takes over most of the centre of the town. La Rochelle and the Ile de Re and within driving distance for a day at the seaside. A modern bridge gets you onto the island where you will find specialist seafood restaurants.
We do not require a "breakages" deposit and do not charge for broken items.

Relaxing holiday in lovely gite and with a pool. There were some food and wine supplied on day of arrival which was a nice surprise and hosts were helpful but not intrusive.
Many thanks for staying in our gite and for the nice review. It was great to welcome you here and to hear that you had a good holiday. We would also like to thank you for leaving the gite in such beautiful condition. Best wishes from John and Valerie
Wonderfully relaxing fortnight
We were blessed this year (albeit not by the weather). A very nice, clean and well-appointed gite, and a very helpful and hospitable host. The fresh garden produce was a very welcome extra!
Many thanks for staying in our gite and for the very nice review. We hope you had a very pleasant journey home and thanks for the DVD player, they have come a long way since we bought one. Best regards.
Just what we wanted
Really enjoyed staying here. We wanted a peaceful relaxing holiday and that is exactly what we got. John and Val made us welcome on our arrival and made sure we had what we needed. The Gite was comfortable and clean and we settled in straight away. Its worth either taking your own bikes or using the ones that are available at the Gite to explore local area just to soak up the rural atmosphere. The only downside to the holiday, and this was beyond the owners control, was that the local bar and restaurant had decided to close. But other bars and restaurants in the other villages made up for it (hence the need for bikes!).
Thanks David the the great review. The bar will be open again in the spring by the way and we can but hope there will be a new owner in which case it will be back to being open permanently.
Thanks again and best regards and thanks for staying in our gite.
A fabulous sunny week in Romagne
The property was just as described with plenty of room for the two of us. We enjoyed using the big garden and made good use of the pool to cool off. Val and John were most hospitable looking after us well and inviting us to the local auberge for a fabulous moules-frites evening with their friends. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet and relaxing holiday.
Thanks Sarah for the nice review. We are glad you enjoyed your holiday here. The restaurant may be open permanently again we hope in the not too distant future.
Thanks again and best regards, Valerie

Well equipped and cosy
The gîte was well equipped and very warm. Even though the weather was overcast we had a lovely break. The hosts were on hand if we needed and provided clean towels mid way through the week.
The bottle of wine and baguette waiting for us was a welcome touch after a lengthy journey through rain and hail.
Thank you for staying in our gite and for your nice comments. We're so glad your enjoyed your stay here.
About 1 hour 40 minutes La Rochelle and the ile de Re
A vehicle is essential but can be hired from Poitiers airport or the railway station by prior arrangement. We are a 35 minute drive from both and about 1 hour 15 minutes from Limoges airport. The port of Caen for travellers from Portsmouth is about a 4 to 5 hour drive. The airport at La Rochelle is about a 1 hour 40 minute drive.
We are a 35 minute drive from Poitiers and about 45 minutes to Angouleme. Couhe is about 10 minutes drive and the towns of Gencay and Civray are about the same. The Vallee des Singes or Monkey Valley is nearby (we can sometimes hear the monkeys) where you can see a family of gorillas and all sorts of other primates close to. The park covers 86 acres of farm and woodland and is a unique attraction in France.
For that special meal the "Moulin de Condac" an old watermill on the river Charente is a must. A twentyfive minute drive, dining on the terrace over water is a truly unique experience. A most beautiful setting with fantastic food at a very reasonable price.
Further Details: There are excellent restaurants and British owned bars within a short drive. There is also a bar serving pizza where snacks can be eaten inside or out on the terrace. The boulangerie is in the village for that delicious fresh French bread, cakes and pastries.
