|Minimum Stay||4 - 7 nights|
Meadow Barn is in the heart of the Cornish countryside, and minutes from superb beaches at Porthleven and on the Lizard. The fishing village of Porthleven is a 3 minute drive, or 20 minute walk away and has a growing reputation for superb restaurants. It hosts an annual food festival. A bigger selection of beautiful beaches on the north and south coasts are within a 10 to 45 minute drive. Meadow Barn is fortunate to be situated close to a number of sub-tropical Cornish gardens, and National Trust properties. The gardens offer something to see during every season, but are at their spectacular best from Easter through to the end of summer. Helston, home of the famous Flora Dance which takes place on May 8th, is very nearby. Walkers have a wealth of footpaths to chose from right on our doorstep. The best is a 6-10 mile loop around Loe Pool and the Penrose Estate, taking in woodland, farming, clifftop and beach landscapes. Maps kept in Meadow barn, and our own local knowledge can guide you. The owners, Jane and Antony, are on hand to give recommendations to suit the precise needs of guests - from boat hire to the best beaches, and from family-friendly pubs to the best pasties.
Meadow Barn itself is a beautifully rebuilt listed farm building, with four bedrooms and modern, open plan living space. There's plenty of space in the garden, and in the yard which contains a games room. As well as table tennis, croquet, table football and a climbing wall we also keep a well stocked library of DVDs. We leave the ingredients for a cream tea in the fridge so our visitors can revive themselves after their journey. We provide dishwasher tablets, but not washing powder, since we feel this is a more personal choice.
There are a number of great local events which visitors enjoy combining with their stays: Flora Day on May 8th in neighbouring Helston is a must-watch event, where thousands of couples dance through the streets in their finery, and there's even a touch of pagan spectacle; for aeroplane or military enthusiasts, Culdrose Air Day at the end of July is a fascinating (and loud!) day out; and right on our doorstep in Porthleven, there is an annual food and music festival held in April, and an RNLI Lifeboat Day in August.
Meadow Barn sleeps six, plus a baby in a cot. We love dogs, and have our own black lab/springer cross who often gets 'adopted' by visitors in the garden. However we have decided to keep the barn itself a dog free zone, so have a no pets policy.
We tend to stick to a Friday changeover since we like to be able to enjoy our weekends as a family. However it is possible for us to be flexible, particularly away from the peak seasons, September-May. So if you want to try for a different changeover day, please do get in touch, and we'll see what we can do.
We live in the neighbouring farmhouse with our two teenagers and dog. Away from our 'day jobs' we enjoy doing the sorts of activities Meadow Barn's guests enjoy while on holiday: beaching, surfing, walking the coast paths, and messing about in our kayaks.
We love our little corner of Cornwall, and make the very most of what it has to offer. We hope our visitors will do the same.
jane reynolds purchased this barn in 2007
When we bought it in 2007 Meadow Barn was one of only a few unconverted sets of former farm buildings around. In its courtyard setting, with another barn, and farmhouse, and surrounded by fields, it seemed like an opportunity we couldn't miss. The conversion was a tortuous process - the farm is Grade II listed, and just before we started work we discovered the sorts of problems which would raise Kevin McCloud's eyebrows. But we're so glad we persevered. We could never have found a better location: close to the beautiful fishing village of Porthleven, yet nestled in classic lush farmland.
We love the fact that we are close to the bustle of Porthleven if we need it, but are otherwise quietly rural. We also have a really good choice of beaches within half an hour of us, and can chose according to tide and weather conditions. We love telling visitors about our favourites - many of which are known only to locals or to people who have been holidaying here for years.
After a day exploring beaches and sights, more energetic visitors can continue their fun and games with a friendly game of croquet or table tennis.
Over the years we've found Meadow Barn is particularly popular with families where grandparents come too. The older generation takes the ensuite room at one end of the barn, leaving the younger generations to share the other 'wing'. That said, we've also had couples, who've revelled in the space, and even, memorably, a crew of Estonian lifeboatmen!
We visited in February half term and had a fantastic time playing table tennis and watching a well chosen selection of films in front of the log burner. A very comfortable house. When the sun came out we enjoyed taking walks with the dog, Bilbo, and eating ice cream in Portheleven, which has lovely restaurants, a beach and good surf. The owners, Jane and Antony, are very friendly, and offer great suggestions of things to do locally. An awesome place to have a holiday! Thank you. We're looking forward to staying again! L,R,E,W,J
We have loved our stay here. Walking to the village was very do able if you don't mind the hill back. We found the village lovely to wander around and we were very central to surrounding villages. Loved the scones and cream as a welcome treat and Jane it was so lovely to meet you and your hubby. We could not ask for a better and more helpful host. No wifi was a pity but it was widely available In The village. Such a spacious home and a welcome respite after a busy day. Enjoyed the peaceful garden, great showers, warm interior, fab and ample kitchen and even a laundry - very welcome as most places didn't have one which is tricky as an overseas visitor. Thank you again, we will definitely recommend you to our friends.
We stayed for a week in July with friends and had a great time. The barn is huge, the photographs don't really do justice to the light and airy open plan living space, the rest of the rooms are a good size and I particularly appreciated the superking size bed. Really well equipped as well, the bbq and outside table was well used, a good choice of DVDs and books and the table football is a nice touch. The garden is great for kids and feels private and peaceful, the owners helpful and friendly. Really well situated in a beautiful area with the charm of Porthleven and the facilities of Helston a short drive away. Perfect base for our holiday in a beautiful part of Cornwall.
We had a great week, the Barn is in a beautiful setting and extremely well equipped and easily accommodated our 2 families. The furnishings are to a high standard, the kitchen is very well equipped with everything thought of, especially the Cornish cream tea on arrival. The Barn has plenty of outside space for the children to play and a lovely patio area inclusive of a fire pit which our husbands enjoyed as did the children toasting marshmallows. The play barn entertained both little and big kids (adults) as did the football table in the lounge. The Barn is in a lovely location with easy access to some beautiful beaches, Perranuthnoe in particular. We can highly recommend the barn and will return next year.

We returned for our second week at Meadow Barn in May. It's a wonderful cottage, loads of space, clean with good facilities. The kids love the football table and outdoor play barn, plus bilbo the dog. Lots of outdoor space and the owners make you feel really welcome. There is loads to do in the area, even after 2 weeks there we still have more places to go and visit.
Porthleven beach is 2 miles away. The long sandy Praa Sands, with its gentle surf is just 7 miles away. The Lizard, which contains many beaches, coves and fishing villages is a similar distance. The North coast's bigger, more rugged beaches such as Gwithian and Newquay which often have bigger surf than the south coast are 12-30 miles away. Most of the beaches we recommend have lifeguards, but there are other, more inaccessible, quieter ones, known mainly to locals, which we can tell you about.
