Blackgang Chine is nearby, the oldest themed attraction in the UK, and within easy reach are The Needles and Alum Bay. Attractions include Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Isle of Wight Pearl, Dinosaur Isle, a donkey sanctuary and Calbourne Water Mill which has a 17th-century working watermill. Osborne House and Gardens (Queen Victoria’s holiday residence), and Carisbrooke Castle are a short distance away. The Isle of Wight was never a place I thought we would call home until a surprise birthday trip organised by Robert for my birthday.

We fell in love with the beauty of Ventnor and by chance spotted Clarence House in the window of a local estate agent.........

And so here we are.

With our Elegant, Victorian Manor House in the heart of Ventnor with 4 holiday apartments and gorgeous views over Ventnor Park.

We fell in love with Ventnor and the friendliness of "The Islanders".

It truly has a different feel from the mainland and yet is only 1/2 an hour away by Catamaran or Ferry.

A drive through the country lanes brings lots of Ohhhs and Ahhhs at the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the quaint thatched villages.

A superb destination for walkers, cyclists or the hearty tri-athletes. There is much to be seen on the Coastal Path with striking chalk geology featuring heavily here in the south. There are great views out to sea and many interesting places to visit, reflecting the island's heritage and royal patronage over the years. Isle of Wight boasts many wonderful cycling and riding routes around the island's dramatic coast line with varying degrees of difficulty.

Fabulous apartment

My husband and I recently stayed in the Osborne apartment ,most definitely the best choice of stay. The apartment is finished to a very high luxurious standard and is extremely comfortable . The kitchen is very well equipped with tea, coffee and even dishwasher and washing tablets, everything you need. The bathroom also included toiletries and lovely fluffy towels.

The living area is perfect , bright and surprisingly spacious with a large flat screen Tv. There are beautiful coastal walks, plenty of places to visit. Gillian left a wonderful list of recommended places to eat within walking distance . This really is a fabulous place to stay. I would definitely recommend Clarence House to anyone.Thank's Gillian and Robert for a perfect stay.

Osbourne Apartment Top Quality

On arrival it is always, have I made the right choice is it what was on the description. Both of these are a big yes at Clarence House. Gillian greeted us with a big smile and kind words, she took us to Osbourne Apartment which was very clean, airy and very luxurious with little details like fresh flowers. With the apartments being in easy walking distance of Ventnor town and the list of eatery's given by Gillian you can't go wrong.

Thank you Gillian and Robert for a fantastic week at Clarence House, I will have no hesitation in recommending you to friends and family alike.

Very comfortable base for IOW exploration

My wife and I found the apartment just as seen and described on the website. It was bright, very clean, well equipped and comfortable. The kitchen was compact but contained all of the required utensils, crockery etc with the added bonus of a coffee machine and a little box of complementary teas and coffee pods. The living room was bright and a comfortable place to sit when eating meals by the window or on the sofa enjoying the large flat screen TV. The bed was comfortable, especially after long days walking and it was nice being able to have the old sash windows open at night. Nothing was lacking in the. toilet/shower room (apart from maybe an extra few centimetres space to dry oneself!) with lots of hot water when required.

We found that our phones were useless around Ventnor (Vodafone 3G network) so it was always handy using the Clarence House Wifi network to catch up with everything when returning in the evening.

The other two apartments in Clarence House were also occupied at the same time but we heard nothing of them. Although parking is on the main road outside Clarence House we never had a problem getting a spot on the not very busy road. We were easily able to walk in to Ventnor for the shops and beach front but it's slightly more challenging coming back (up the hills or windy roads). It was nice being opposite the park and being able to walk through it and up and over the hill on to the coastal path and walk down in to Ventnor or Steep Hill Cove. It was handy having the Spyglass Inn at the bottom of the hill where they served nice food as well as the usual array of drinks. We also enjoyed a walk down the road from Clarence House to the Ventnor Botanical Gardens where we had a great afternoon walking around their non formally laid out gardens along with tea and home made cakes!

On our most adventurous day we walked the coastal path right up to Sandown Pier and back; a 14 mile round trip through various terrain with the odd stop off at strategically placed tea shops along the way. In the car you can usually be anywhere on the island within 40 minutes. In our week's stay we covered the whole coastline and particularly enjoyed Freshwater Bay, The Needles country park, Yarmouth, Cowes, Bembridge and Seaview (very tasty dinner at the Boathouse pub). Shanklin and Sandown were nice and probably better if you have kids in tow.

I would definitely recommend Clarence House as a comfortable base from which to explore the IOW. Thanks Gillian & Robert!

Fabulous Flat

Accommodation is highly commended for its location, decor, facilities, cleanliness and comfort. Owners have clearly paid a lot of attention to detail when considering everything visitors may need to make them feel at home. Had initial concern about parking in the street, but this didn't prove to be a problem at all. Really understanding customer service with super fast responses to emails. No hesitation in recommending Clarence House!

Perfect in every way....

We stayed for seven nights in The Carisbrooke Apartment. We were absolutely delighted with the accommodation .... newly refurbished and tastefully decorated throughout, Gillian and Robert really have thought of everything to make this a 5-star stay! The apartment is very spacious and airy - it is impressive but does not skimp on comfort. We certainly would not hesitate to recommend it to our family and friends and our first visit won't be our last ..... we would love to return. Clarence House is located opposite Ventnor Park with the town, beach and Ventnor's Botanical Gardens within comfortable walking distance.

Wonderful apartment

We stayed in the spacious two bed roomed apartment, beautifully clean, plus beautiful high quality furnishings. Everything had been provided for us, toiletries, bottled water, chocolates by our bed and, as stated in a previous review, it was as good a quality as a five star hotel. A super place to relax, with views across to Ventnor Park, and from there good walkable access to both Ventnor Beach, Steephill Cove, and the Botanic Gardens.

The owners went out of their way to provide an extremely positive experience for us. We will be back!

Of special interest is the vast array of cycling, walking and swimming spots on the Island.With advice and information available from Robert who is a keen cyclist and open water swimmer.

Coast/Beach:

More than half the Isle of Wight has been designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty, and there are 65 miles of coastline to explore. Along the more beautiful south coast there's a beach to suit everyone. A 5 min stroll down the winding path and through the cascading gardens, you are on the golden beachfront of Ventnor, which has something of a riviera feel. The tide is strong here, but the beach itself is clean, mainly sandy, easily accessible, and has rockpools to poke around in at either end.

Travel:

There are several ways to get onto the Island. From Lymington,Southampton and Portsmouth both Red Funnel and WightLink provide a very good ferry service.

Distance from Ryde or Fishbourne to Ventnor is apprx 12 miles of lovely countryside driving. ( or cycling for the more adventurous )

We are in the heart of Ventnor so all amenities are accessible by walking.

Notes on accommodation: Please bear in mind that Ventnor is a steeply sloping town from the hills at St Boniface Down toward the sea, and therefor so is Clarence House. We have slowly graduating steps up to the house, and slightly steeper ones around through the garden to the Apartments. It is not suitable for the mobility impaired and there is unfortunately no wheelchair access. It is also not suitable for small children and therefore we have a minimum age limit of 12 years old Outside: The sheltered location of Ventnor on the cliff of the Island's south coast means we experiences a microclimate with more sunny days than much of the British Isles, and fewer frosts. This has allowed many species of subtropical plant to be successfully planted and maintained. Do not be surprised to see growing in the garden plants that are native to New Zeland or the Canary Islands. Osborne Apartment at Clarence House has use of a lovely secluded sun trap garden with tables and chairs to enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine
