East Roof is a converted barn with spectacular views situated in an elevated position near the village of Gunnerside. The area is famous for its Lead mining history and offers an abundance of walks straight from the door over the moors and along the valley bottom. Making it a perfect place for exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Surrounded by open countryside, East Roof offers a quiet and peaceful location. A 5 minute walk takes you to the unspoilt village of Gunnerside with it's licensed restaurant and cafe. On a Friday night around 7.00pm the travelling fish and chip van comes into Gunnerside. A short car journey takes you to the villages of Muker and Reeth which offer good food, pubs and shops. The cottage has it's living space, toilet and 1 single bedroom on the ground floor with the other bedrooms on the lower ground floor, allowing you to enjoy the best of the fantastic views. The sitting room has an open coal fire with all fuel included in the rent.
We provide a mobile phone for emergency use. There are EE and 3 mobile phone signals at the cottage.
My parents came to farm at Gunnerside in 1965. They decided to diversify in 1990 and converted one of our barns into a self contained holiday cottage. East Roof as it was named became a home from home from then on. Many of our guests still return today bringing with them their children and grandchildren.
When my parents retired, my husband, two daughters and I took over the running of East Roof. We live near Richmond and return each week to clean and maintain the cottage.
I love to come back to East Roof and the area where I grew up, the view across the dale never changes apart from the effect the seasons have upon it.
Diane Raw purchased this cottage in 1960
The property has been in my family for over 50 years.
The best part of the cottage is its peaceful location, with stunning views from every window and walks from the door step. With the popular village of Gunnerside only a five minutes walk away with its Cafe and Pub both serving good food.
Where do I start..!!! A lovely warm welcome by Diane and her daughter on our arrival at the cottage. We were shown around all the rooms and facilities. The cottage was spotless and in a beautiful location. All the equipment that we required was available.Towels, tea towels, dustbin bags, washing up liquid, dishcloths, anti bacterial handwash, toilet rolls etc. There was even some homemade shortcake biscuits waiting for us when we arrived. They were lovely with a cup of tea after our long journey...!! :-)
The cottage was in a beautiful location.Only a stones throw from Gunnerside which has a pub and a coffee shop.
There was also plenty of information at the cottage of activites and walks in the local area. Some of the walks can be completed from the cottage. These included Gunnerside Gill,Muker and Keld. All lovely walks with beautiful scenery. We had trips out to Hawes (Wensleydale creamery),Richmond,
Askrigg and Leyburn. We would recommend the Black Lion Hotel in Richmond for afternoon tea.It was £9.95 for afternoon tea for two. This included a sandwich of your choice,a strawberry tartlet and a scone with jam and butter as well as a drink (soft drink, tea or coffee). We loved it.
I would recommend this cottage.Everything was first class from the first booking contact with Diane up until the finish of the holiday.Any queries before the holiday were answered quickly and the cottage was lovely.
Thanks Diane. We all had a great time and cannot wait to get back..!!!
Eastroof was very clean, spacious and everything you needed was there. The central heating was very efficiant and the coal fire was great.
There were panoramic views from every window. We cannot thank Diane enough for letting us stay at there lovely cottage
Very helpful and understanding owner - assisted us all the way - lovely touch of home made biscuits on arrival. The house is well equipped. Very peaceful and child friendly - 4 children age 6-9 years old. Good outdoor fun. Beautiful area to walk in - we all went on a bear hunt (parent will understand the book reference). The beds were very comfortable, we all slept well. The kitchen held up with us staying in and cooking a variety of meals for 6 people. A truly amazing area to stay - James Herriot countryside. It was the best holiday that we have ever had. Partly due to the area but also the house was a home for a week which enabled us to relax and enjoy the time away together. Thank you so much for the accommodation and kindness.
Our stay again at this Comfortable Cottage was outstanding, we always feel like we've come Home when we arrive here for our Family Holiday. We have stayed here several times over last 5-6yrs and never been disappointed with Cottage it's facilities or Weather. The Walks in surrounding Area are Excellent and have a look ways been popular with my Husband and 2 Boys.
We stayed at this fabulous cottage in February. It truly is not only a superb cottage but also a superb location! Everything you could ask for and Diane was lovely. We've stayed in quite a few cottages over the years and this is the best one. All in all a fabulous stay. We will definitely be returning.
Everything about this cottage is absolutely perfect, warm and cosy, spotlessly clean and the location is second to none. The beds and furniture are all very comfortable. Lovely walks from the door and only the cows and sheep to disturb the peace. I would recommend this cottage unreservedly.
