Traditional Turkish cottage imaginatively brought up to date by Sara, its English artist-owner and husband Chris a gardener, with stunning views of lake and mountains. A large balcony overlooking olive and citrus orchard serves as an extra room, ideal for relaxing with a book, sipping wine during the dramatic sunsets eating meals or enjoying, perhaps some yoga. Sara and Chris, who live in Turkey all year, are on hand to provide ideas about trips and advice on places of local interest. These range from Greco/Roman ruins at Kaunos and hot springs, to rugged gorge walks rewarded by stunning rock pools ideal for a cool swim. There is plenty to do locally; the huge freshwater lake itself is particularly beautiful, delightful for swimming. The beaches, every bit as beautiful as you might imagine, are not far away and there is a spectacular coastal walk. The cottage is outside the town of Koycegiz, a five minute drive north from the centre. This is not a tourist centre, though the lake deserves to be widely known. From Koycegiz you can take a boat across the lake to the hot springs and Dalayan, then down the river to the turtle beach. Plenty of restaurants line the shore and there is a bustling market every Monday. More touristy towns can be found nearby, such as Fethiye (1 hour) and Dalayan (30 mins). Dalaman airport is 40 minutes away; there is a good bus service (Havas) but it is wise to hire a car to explore this fascinating area. Hints of Turkey's rich history are tantalising - and in many places there to see.
I am an Artist living in Turkey with my Husband Chris. We both love exploring wild places and have found this area to be full of secret treasures. We are very relaxed and delighted to share this special place with other adventurers. For fellow Artists, Easels and basic equipment can be provided. There is much to inspire out here!
We bought this property in 2010, a small traditional stone built house surrounded by citrus trees. We lived there while we designed and built our new house inspired by old Mugla architecture using a lot of wood instead of concrete.
We lie between major tourist areas, very few visitors come here preferring the more crowded Dalyan on the other side of the lake. We have abundant fresh water flowing all year which provides many secret swimming spots. We have a healthy flora and fauna resulting from its high winter rainfall and conservation status.
Our local market is a wonder to behold, small holders and farmers sell their wonderful fresh produce so it is almost impossible not to have a healthy diet. Gocek and Dalyan are within easy reach for a taste of the high life and tourist shops etc.
Car hire is a must as we are too far from shops and the market to walk easily. However you will benefit hugely from having a car as the places I can recommend are only accessible by road. We have wonderful gorges to explore, the most beautiful beaches are 30 mins away, hot springs, a spectacular greco/roman ruin at Kaunos and the drives to these places are also wonderful.
Koycegiz is a sleepy town unbothered by tourism. There are a selection of good restaurants along the lake side, when sipping a cool glass of wine and watching the sun set, it is impossible not to feel happy. we dont have a swimming pool, preferring to go wild swimming but there is a lovely marble plunge pool for the really hot times which is very refreshing. House book is full of information.
I have nothing but good things to say about our trip to Sara and Chris cottage. Immediately upon arriving we were greeted with warmth.
Sara gave us a number of excellent recommendations ranging from day trips to the Kaunos ruins and the Sultanye hot springs to some delicious restaurants by the lake. We were lucky enough to visit Koycegiz in mid april so the weather was perfect. Could not recommend staying at this cottage enough. Truly a lovely, lovely experience and an absolutely wonderful town. Picking fresh lemon and oranges right outside our door was definitely a plus!
Sara and Chris cottage is perfect, a quiet oasis amongst fruit trees and surrounded by chickens, where you can really relax and take in rural Turkey. The cottage was cool, comfortable and well equipped and we spent our days lounging on the balcony, dipping into the cold plunge pool and exploring. There is so much to do within half an hours drive of Koycegiz. A brilliant place to which we hope to return.
My husband and I recently stayed at Sara and Chris's cottage and had a fantastic holiday. The property is full of character but has all the facilities that are needed. There is a lovely vine-covered terrace as well as another outdoor seating area and kitchen, a garden and the use of a plunge-pool. Inside, the cottage is nicely furnished and includes a dining kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. In comparison to nearby Dalyan, Koycegiz is a a less-touristy town set on a large lake with stunning mountain scenery. The cottage is located on the fringe of the town towards the mountains and it offers lots of peace and the feel of real Turkey. Sara and Chris are very friendly and on hand to offer tips and advice on places to visit in the area, whilst also respecting the privacy of their guests. They have two very friendly dogs, Luna and Lady, along with a handful of chickens who roam around the fruit trees and flowers in the garden. We hired a car to explore the area, and used a car hire company recommended by Sara - Metro Car Rental - their office is in Dalaman itself and so they collected us from the airport, which saved us the trouble of having to navigate the airport roads and car parks ourselves. The location of the cottage is close to the coast as well as the mountains, and we visited a number of lovely places such as Eckincik and Gocek. We like to visit less commercialised places and found the area around the cottage to be exactly that. Locals were friendly and keen to see us - we had a particularly interesting encounter with a drink-seller at the local waterfall, who sold the best home-made lemonade! All in all, if you want to experience the real Turkey this is a great property to stay in.
We have just had a lovely few days in Sara and Chris's wonderful cottage. The cottage is surrounded by the most beautiful scented trees and flowers, the balcony is a lovely shaded place to sit and relax and the plunge pool was very refreshing, especially in the July heat!
Sara and Chris were both very welcoming and had some fantastic tips for local visits to great waterfalls, river swims, mud baths with thermal pools and the beautiful lake to swim in.....fantastic.The local town is a short drive to a lakeside with some great restaurants.
We will definately be back to soak up the relaxing, calm atmosphere of this lovely cottage.

To the local lake beach it takes 10 mins by car. The two other nearest beaches, Ekincik and Iztuzu beaches are both around 30 to 40 mins. Both spectacular drives. This is all in a conservation area, largely due to the nesting sites of the logger head and caretta caretta turtles. We also have a rare Nile turtle inhabiting the lake, found only in this area and in the Nile.
Our local airport is Dalaman, a 40 minute drive south east from here. Car hire is easy from here, I can recommend you a competitive car hire firm, who will meet you at the airport. Car hire is essential for your visit here, you would be quite stranded without one.
Dalayan, a pretty town can be reached by boat across the lake (day trip), or a 30 minute drive. Kaunos our local Greco/Roman ruin is in a spectacular setting looking out across the delta, it is about 45 mins drive there through wonderful mountain and lake views. Drive to Gocek (30 mins) and take a boat trip around the beautiful bays, great shopping and restaurants there. Swimming river and Waterfall 15 mins. Ekincik beach 40 Mins. Local town of Koycegiz 10 mins. Dalaman airport 40 mins.
Koycegiz is a sleepy town but well served by ATMs, banks and jewellery shops to change money. Good restaurants along the lake side abound, and cheaper Turkish basic eateries are great for snacks. We have well equipped supermarkets and an amazing fruit and veg market every Monday. This is a truly wonderful spectacle, it is a local holiday and you will bump into many turks dressed well for the day. Local small holders will sell their home grown produce, cheese, olive oil, walnuts, peppers, a cornucopia of delicious healthy food. We can provide a shopping trolley! Fresh fish and poultry are there too and much to tempt you. There is also a clothing section where you can sometimes find good shoes, T shirts, jeans etc. at bargain prices. For swimming enthusiasts there is plenty to delight. Early morning swims on the still lake are a high point, also plunging into the deep clean pools of our local river or if you're feeling brave a waterfall cliff jump. Sara and Chris are on hand to explain local walks, many with dramatic coastal views.
