About Melanie Smith

I grew up in Edinburgh and spent lots of time on Gullane beach. I took my future husband there on our second date and he fell in love with it too. We've had fantastic family holidays there with our children, and wanted a more permanent connection.

The Laurus House is a holiday home for us, that we'd like to share with you. We fitted it out to the standard that we would expect, and want you to have as good a time as we have when visiting Gullane, and hope that you fall in love with the place as we have.

Melanie Smith purchased this apartment in 2014

Why Melanie Smith chose East Lothian

The beach at Gullane is one of best we've found in the country. There's enough space so it never feels crowded, the sand is beautiful and it's nice and clean.

Gullane itself is a really friendly place with some great restaurants and shops. There's plenty to do in the local area, and with Edinburgh not much more than a half hour drive, you'll never get bored.

For golfers, you'll know far more about the courses than I do, but I know that when I mention that Muirfield and Gullane Golf Club are within a ten minute walk, eyes tend to light up!

What makes this apartment unique

We chose the property for it's location. To have the beach, the golf and all the local shops and restaurants within a ten minute walk was perfect. Great links to Edinburgh and North Berwick a ten minute drive, it really is a perfect place to spend a week.

After a long drive, when we arrived at the apartment, we found it very relaxing, comfortable and peaceful. Very good location.

Definitely recommend this place to everyone. We are planning to go there again in summer.

Perfect birthday holiday

  • 5 of 5

We went to the Laurus House in Gullane to celebrate our son's 7th birthday. He and his younger brother had a fantastic time, and so did we! The apartment has been beautifully refurbished to high standards, and was very clean on arrival. In reality, the Laurus House exceeds its listing description and photos. The neighbours were particularly friendly and helpful, and we had the wonderful communal garden to ourselves most of the time. Everything in Gullane is within walking distance, and we especially enjoyed the stunning beaches, the ice cream van, the German bakery and the busy local takeaway. We have already highly recommended this property to friends, and we hope to return at some point in the future to celebrate another birthday.

Laura's House

  • 4 of 5

We were very impressed with Laurus House. 2 lovely bedrooms and two Bathrooms. Very clean and well equipped. My son plays on the European tour and we were staying for the Scottish Open week. It was perfect to walk to the course. The neighbours were also extremely friendly and helpful. We will most certainly be back to stay in the near future just for a relaxing few days. Doggie friendly too! Perfect! Highly recommended from the Fleetwoods! Thanks Mel.

And relax.............

  • 5 of 5

I drove directly from Southampton via a thousand traffic jams, and so was pretty tired when we got to the apartment. However, as soon as we walked in all the stress ebbed away: A lovely apartment, clean and fresh, and well maintained.

Gullane had the shops we needed for all the basics for our self -catering consumables.....there is a fantastic cafe/bakery 2 minutes walk away....be very careful of your waist line as it does gorgeous cakes, pastries and breads.

For the sightseeing part of our holiday we drove into Edinburgh a couple of times and a couple of times I drove part of the way and then used the park & ride,(an inexpensive and very short train journey- I'd recommend this - The family train fare is cheaper than parking in the city and a lot easier too).

From the owners website you will already know how close the beach is and I can confirm it's only a ten minute walk: And what a beach!!! Fantastic!

We never go back to the same place twice on holiday as we always think that there are so many different places to see around the UK. However, this place could make us break our rule!

Lovely family break

  • 4 of 5

I decided to take my two children away for the week as my husband was working and I was lucky enough to be able to book this lovely apartment. In the end I had my mum to stay, my friend and at the end of the week, my husband turned up so we had lots of entertaining! The property is located in the beautiful town of Gullane and has been freshly refurbished by the owners. The facilities in the town are really good (the Falko German Bakery is world class) and other places to explore with a short car or bus journey (the big blu pizza truck at Dunbar harbour is fab). The apartment itself is tasteful and cosy and has a pretty shared garden - although we felt like we had it to ourselves. The nearby beach is beautiful. Any queries we had were answered straight away by the attentive owners and it made all the difference to our enjoyment of the holiday. We will definitely keep this in mind again for another family holiday.

Hidden Gem, Fantasic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Myself, my husband and our 2 boys had a week here in May 2014, and we had a fabulous time. I usually get homesick after a few days, but could have happily stayed much longer! The apartment is comfortable, and has been newly renovated to a very high standard. It was spotlessly clean with lovely fresh bedlinen and fluffy towels. The bedrooms are spacious and the ensuite is a bonus! The selection of dvds and games was appreciated, aswell as the lovely secluded garden which is accessible straight from the living room. I cannot stress highly enough how stunning the local beach is, with soft golden sand backed by sand dunes, and lovely walks along the coast to Aberlady. Simply gorgeous, I highly recommend a romantic walk on the beach at sunset! There is loads to do and see locally, North Berwick is a lovely town with excellent shops and restaurants. The swimming pool at Dunbar is good for a wet day with a wave machine and slides, great fun. We took our bikes and enjoyed some easy bike rides as the area is quite flat. I recommend a website called Map My Ride for ideas. Gullane itself is quite small but has everything you need, we never had a problem parking and the locals were very friendly. We didn't play golf, but the courses seemed very popular and were always bustling with people. The local takeaway is excellent, and serves everything from fish & chips, to pizza, pasta and burgers. Overall, a memorable holiday for all the right reasons, highly recommended!!

Coast/Beach:

Undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Scotland, the north and west facing Gullane Bay, backed by dunes, sweeps round from Gullane Point to Black Rocks providing breathtaking scenery and fantastic windsurfing. Longer walks are available, with the stunning John Muir Way coastal walk passing through Gullane.

The blue flag sandy beach is a gentle ten minute walk but if you plan to be loaded up with picnic and beach activity gear, a large car park is less than a five minute drive.

Travel:

Gullane is just under 20 miles from Edinburgh, and the pleasant coastal drive takes between 35 and 40 minutes.

The train is probably the fastest way into Edinburgh from Gullane. There is no station in Gullane itself, but North Berwick, Long Niddry and Drem are all within a ten minute drive and trains run approximately every hour.

At the time of writing, the 124, X24 and X5 buses run from Edinburgh to Gullane and run approximately every half hour.

Distances:

Edinburgh - 20 miles

North Berwick - 5 miles

Musselburgh - 14 miles

Further Details:

Five miles from Gullane, less than ten minutes by car, is the beautiful seaside town of North Berwick. Packed with great places to eat and drink, the town hosts the Scottish Seabird Centre, the National Museum of Flight, offers great beaches (and boat trips to nearby islands) parks and gardens and provides the opportunity to climb North Berwick Law, a volcanic hill that offers amazing views of the surrounding countryside.

The main event, however, is of course Edinburgh. A city which is both modern and cosmopolitan, yet historic and welcoming. With world class attractions including the castle, the zoo, the National Museum of Scotland, Arthur’s Seat and the Edinburgh Dungeons, there’s plenty to do all year round, and not just when the International Festival is underway.
