Overview

About the property

Chalet Ty Tom, Turracher Hoehe, Styria/Carinthia border, Austria - Gorgeous views, snow six months of the year, jacuzzi while snow falls, 10 minutes walk to the pistes

Chalet Ty Tom is a luxury ten bed chalet situated in the beautiful high altitude Alpine village of Turracher Hohe, in the Nockberge mountain range. It has been built to the highest sustainable principles in the middle of the stone pine forests. Its wonderful location provides views of the surrounding mountain peaks and overlooks a number of the ski pistes.

With jacuzzi and sauna, and a fire and balconies, it gives an authentic 'alpine chalet' experience. This area is quiet and relaxing. Small enough to explore, but big enough to always have something more to see and experience. A great place to chill or exercise - you choose. Turracher Hohe is located at 1800m and has snow for six months of the year and due to its location in the east it also has hot summers.

The village has over 40km of ski slopes served by modern gondolas and chairlifts with a mix of blues, reds, one black and ski routes. It is an ideal resort for families, with a great ski school in the centre of the village. Chalet Ty Tom is only ten minutes walk from the ski lifts but is also served by the regular ski train which stops about 20m away. there is also cross country skiing, skating (on the frozen Turrachsee), dedicated tobogganing runs, the Nockyflitzer toboggan ride, snow shoe walks and ski touring trails. The lake also hosts an ice polo game, and the ski butler service provides drinks all season from skidoos - on the slopes!

In the summer, the area is warm and sunny due to its location up from the Italian border. As a result it has developed into a popular destination for hiking, walking, running and mountain biking, with trails and routes marked out and indicating length of time to complete and grading the degree of difficulty. For the more sedate there are signposted nature trails linking lakes with flora and fauna and passing mountain huts for sustenance along the way. The Turrachsee is bordered by a number of decent restaurants and bars, some on the water's edge, and each bar terrace has views across the lake to the mountains and forests. The lake sees swimmers, paddle boats, surf paddlers and float bicycles all enjoying its cool waters throughout the summer months.

Turracher Hohe is also located in the middle of a ring of fascinating urban centres to visit on day trips - Salxburg (2hrs), Vienna (3.5hrs), Graz (2hrs), Trieste (3hrs) and Venice (3.5hrs).

Chalet Ty Tom is also linked to the Alpenpark Turracher Hohe, which provides a main reception building for all staying in its member chalets. The reception is only ten minutes walk from the chalet and has extra accommodation, a bar area, ski storage facilities, a cash point and games area. The reception can also order you fresh bread, croissants, milk and supplies delivered to your door every morning in time for breakfast! There is a small store in the village for general items, but only 15 minutes drive away is a larger supermarket at Ebene Reichenau, and there are also similar ones in Predlitz and Stadl an der Mur, 30 minutes away. The village also has a bank, a tourist information centre and a spectacular crystal museum, showing the wonders of the geology of the area.

The wider region has a large nature park, which borders the village and has a spectacular road running through it. Nearby are also many other tourist attractions and golf courses. The village has a wide range of hotels, restaurants and mountain huts to choose from in terms of eating and drinking. The majority of hotels are found around the Turrachersee, many with terraces on the lake edge. Restaurants range from traditional Austrian food, to international cuisine to pizzerias. The mountain huts are found further out of the village, strategically placed near the hiking paths in summer and ski pistes in winter. Most do a delicious menu of Austrian and more international dishes.

The village is located at a high mountain pass which reaches 1795m, with mountains surrounding it climbing up to over 2400m. The area has three lakes, the large Turrachersee (19.4ha), the higher, open Schwarzsee (2.6ha) and the forest-ringed smaller Grunsee (1.48ha). All are surrounded by the largest stone pine forests in Austria, and consequently home to a large variety of wildlife. Red deer, chamois, roe deer, marmots, fox, badger, pine marten, polecats, weasel and red squirrels. One red squirrel frequently visits the balcony of Chalet Ty Tom each morning - we have nicknamed him 'Tufty'. There are also local populations of golden eagles, goshawks, sparrow hawks, kestrels, peregrine falcons and many species of owl and woodpeckers.

About Robert Firth

We are a family who love the Austrian and Swiss Alps.

In Chalet Ty Tom you will meet Tom Arth, our resident bear, who has promised to look after any children who stay in the chalet. We named the chalet after our son, who loves the mountains too - either hiking or skiing.

Robert Firth purchased this chalet in 2013

Why Robert Firth chose Murau

As a family we have taken a ski holiday and a hiking holiday almost every year in the Alps, and realised that we should get a property which allowed us to do both, in comfort, in our chosen environment, with friends and family or on our own. We fell in love with Turracher Hohe. Quiet, high altitude, loads of snow, very warm in summer, great skiing, modern facilities, wildlife everywhere, next to a National park, and in reach of day trips to Salzburg, Vienna and even Venice.

It is not a party place. It doesn't have masses of black runs or off piste skiing. It doesn't have many British visiting. All good!

It has some excellent restaurants. It has great weather, whatever season you choose. It is clean and tidy and it cares for the environment. Even better!

We love it, hope you do too

What makes this chalet unique

Chalet Ty Tom has everything you need for a full on skiing holiday, or a relaxing walking/hiking or cycling break in the mountains.

The sauna and jacuzzi are a great addition in easing aching muscles, chilling or drinking a celebratory schnapps at the end of the day.

The balconies are wide and south facing for soaking up the sun or eating outside. With fresh croissants delivered to your door each morning you will feel spoilt. With a fully equipped kitchen the cooking can be a real pleasure too.

We have furnished the chalet with simple materials, warm colours, our own photos, antique skis which tell their own stories and maps and artwork.

We have also added toboggans, DVD's, books, CD's and an information book for the convenience and pleasure of our guests. We hope you feel a

Guestbook comments from the owner

A brilliant New Year's break - loads of snow and sunny days for glorious skiing. Highlights were the New Year fireworks, riding the Nockyflitzer and sitting in the jacuzzi with snow falling outside. Zoe loved the bear and the chalet was a great place to chill out with schnapps and games.

Thanks for the week Chalet Ty Tom - we will be back!

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Chalet Ty Tom is finished to a high specification. Timber to ceilings and walls, slate floors, with slate tiling to bathrooms and strong, comfortable beds. Triple glazing and high insulation means it stays warm through the winter, and cross ventilation and extensive balconies allows the cool breezes to cool it in the hot summers. The chalet is arranged with the majority of the sleeping accommodation on the lower floor, and the living accommodation in the upper eaves, giving a real 'chalet' feel to the living spaces, including the floor to ceiling feature chimney. Controls for the heating, fire and kitchen appliances are all very simple to use, if needed. Two car parking spaces are next to the chalet to allow two families to park outside. From Christmas this year (2014) we will have a new wifi system installed for the chalet. Outside: As part of the chalet there are two main south facing balconies, with views towards the mountains, forests and ski slopes. Both balconies have two steamer chairs and a small table, and the top balcony (adjacent to the living area) has a breakfast table and six chairs for 'al fresco' eating. Both balconies have lighting. The entrance porch faces up towards the forest and contains the lockable store, a bench seat for putting boots on (or taking them off), lighting and an external tap. Adjacent to the chalet plot are two car parking spaces. The plot on which the chalet is located is quite a steep slope, so is currently left to pine trees and plants. Utility Room: Entrance lobby has rubber floor for wet ski boots and clothes. Hanging storage for boots, coats and equipment. Boot warmer for cold or wet boots. Full length mirror. Washing machine. Notice board for messages. Drying racks, mops, brushes and bucket. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: A cleaning service, laundry service, towels and linen are all provided, although extra towels for the jacuzzi is recommended. The chalet will be clean on arrival, and extra cleaning, towels or laundry can be supplied if requested during the stay. Other: Balconies are south facing with views of the mountains and ski slopes and have steamer chairs and breakfast table and chairs and lighting. Lockable external store has toboggans, sledges and snow shovels. Porch has a bench seat, lighting and water tap.

Clean, stylish, well equipped chalet with superb jacuzzi, sauna and comfortable bedrooms.

  • 5 of 5

Great skiing holiday. Plenty of room for everyone and only a ten minute walk from the main lift. Facilities were excellent. Three bathrooms, four bedrooms, a well equipped kitchen and a sauna and jacuzzi with a view of the mountains. The boot room heater kept boots and gloves warm and dry and the store had sledges and toboggans for evening fun!

All in all a superb week.

We will be back.

The perfect skiing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We spent a glorious week in chalet Ty Tom which is spacious, comfortable, well appointed and perfectly located. The ski conditions were ideal for the family and the resort was family-friendly, inexpensive and provided everything we could have wanted. I would have no hesitation in recommending, and indeed we fully intend to return as soon as possible.

Stunning location, comfortable chalet.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Chalet Ty Tom with another family and had a fabulous time. The owners had thought of everything - comfy beds, attractive decoration, plenty of cooking utensils and loads of tableware and glasses etc. The shed had several sledges which our children spent ages playing with in the trees across the road from the chalet. Also shovels etc to dig our cars out!

Turracher Hohe was such a friendly resort and worked well for us - our kids (aged 9-15) were all beginners but had lessons every day with Snow Love and by the end of the week were really confident on red runs. The most experienced skiier in our group wasn't bored - even though this is a small resort there is plenty of scope, and they had recently opened up a new chair lift. We had loads of snow while we were there so the pistes were fantastic. You can ski back to the chalet - we didn't, but the route seemed to be clearly marked. There are loads of places to eat in the village, but not much of a supermarket so it's worth stocking up before you get to the chalet. But I think its only about 20 minutes or so to the nearest proper supermarket.

As others have said, the views from every room are stunning and those from the jacuzzi bath simply phenomenal - that was such a treat after a hard day on the slopes! We had a lot of snow, but not much sun so sadly couldn't enjoy the lovely terraces.

We flew to Strasbourg and the other family flew to Zagreb, which was further to drive but apparently popular with travellers to Southern Austria.

The owner, Robert, was really helpful with tips for our stay and I would certainly recommend this chalet.

Utterly stunning and incredibly comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Ty Tom is the kind of home you wish you were clever enough to create! Its warm, and inviting but with every comfort and luxury you could want.

We arrived after a long journey and were instantly charmed by the entire Chalet. It was dark when we arrived so we peeked from room to room enjoying all the lovely personal details such as the gorgeous photography and then bedded down for the night. Upon waking i can only describe the view out of EVERY window as breathtaking. And don't get me started on the view from the jacuzzi tub.....

Our week was just perfect. The skiing was amazing, the ski schools brilliant for the kids, by the end of the week my eldest son was happily skiing off down black runs with me having never been on skis before in his life. The restaurants were fantastic when we ate out and when we ate in, we had everything we could wish for the create a lovely meal at the Chalet followed by a cosy DVD from the in house collection on the TV with a better surround sound system than we have at home.

We honestly fell in love with every aspect of Turracher Hohe and Chalet Ty Tom really was the icing on the cake - i couldn't have dreamed up a more perfect holiday.

Absolutely stunning chalet with fantastic views!!!

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Ty Tom is beautiful, very welcoming, well furnished and clean with wonderful showers and comfortable beds! And not forgetting the fantastic views. Robert was very helpful from the start with the numerous questions I had and he answered immediately, with even more information which really helped us plan our holiday. The lack of snow this year was a worry to us on arrival but the pistes were in perfect condition all day and were probably some of the best conditions we have skied in. We had a wonderful week which flew by far too fast. We thoroughly enjoyed the skiing, the bars in the village, the chalet where we cooked our evening meal each night and even the 10 minute walk to the slopes! ( which definitely warms you up) We look forward to coming back. Thank you again Robert

Turracher Hohe village has a small local store for essentials, next to the Tourist Information Shop and a Raifessenbank with cash point machine. A baker is located in Turrach, ten minutes down the road, but he also does deliveries to the chalet, and can deliver bread, croissants, milk and juices before breakfast to the chalet door. Fifteen minutes drive away to the south is Ebene Reichenau which has a supermarket for all foodstuffs and household goods, and there are similar ones in Predlitz and Stadl an der Mur (about 30 minutes drive to the north).

The village has an enormous range of leisure facilities, for both winter and summer activities. In winter these include skiing, cross country skiing, skating, polo (on the ice lake), snow shoe treks and tobogganing. In the summer this includes walking, hiking, running routes, cycling routes, mountain biking routes, swimming, paddling, nature watching and bird watching.

In the village there is the Nockyflitzer toboggan - an exciting, twisting track with rails holding the toboggans in place, which plunges down the mountainside. There is also the Crystal Museum which exhibits and sells some of the wonderful crystals found in this area.
