Luxury Stone Cottage in St Andrews, Scotland - Idyllic rural retreat perfect for a romantic break, golfing holiday or just getting away from it all
About Karen Driscoll
Peter and Karen Driscoll own The Brake House. We moved to The Brake House in 2013 with our two children and Soutra the Labrador. With grand plans for a self-sufficient smallholding, we quickly bought chickens (Dipsy, La-La & Po!) and sheep (Dolly,Flossie & Lady Ba Ba) who had our first lambs last spring and are currently in lamb again for April 2017. Meanwhile work on the garden, vegetable garden and poly tunnel goes on in between school runs and Peter's work in the NHS. We know how hard the day-to-day grind can be and therefore the importance of a really good holiday. We look forward to welcoming you to our little piece of "The Good Life".

Why Karen Driscoll chose St Andrews
The Brake is located in a beautiful and peaceful spot that is so convenient for St Andrews. It gives us all the space and tranquility we need and as a part of the history of the area, The Brake House is simply a wonderful place to be.
What makes this Cottage unique
This area used to specialise in growing flax. A brake is a basic wooden machine used to break the tough outside of the flax stem and release the silky fibres inside. The Brake House was where the brake was kept, drawing in the growers from miles around. The views of the fields, the old barns and weather vane along with the stables and trees (one we think is 280 years old and planted when the house was built) make for amazing views whichever way you turn. Brake Cottage was originally a stable block, built from the same stone as the house and converted into a one bedroom apartment with separate kitchen, sitting room and shower room, and having its own walled garden.

Lovely cottage. 10 mins from St Andrews, Crail, Kingsbarns. Great area for a break with lots of lovely beaches and beautiful walks.
What a gem of a cottage. Beautifully presented to a very high standard, spotlessly clean with nice touches of fresh flowers and shortbread. Lovely quiet location but only a short distance from St Andrews. The enclosed walled garden is an added bonus and perfect for a dog.
Karen and her family are very friendly and the perfect hosts, we also loved their adorable labrador. We can't wait to return.
GREAT WEE HOOSE
Excellent location - so quiet but only a 5-10 minute drive to St Andrews, Anstruther Pitenweem etc. Lovely house with everything you need. Will be back.
Kev & Julie
Just outside St Andrews and a great location to see everything in area. The cottage was perfect. Thank you opening your home.
Great little cottage just outside city limits
Karen and her family were great hosts. The cottage was very cozy and just as seen in the pictures, but actually larger than it looks. The kitchen has everything needed for cooking meals and several large grocery stores are just minutes away. Comfortable bed, large shower/bathroom and living room TV is nice size with a good variety of channels. Great location for golf outings. The old course is a 15 minute drive and the castle course is even a bit closer. We would definitely stay here again!
Super huisje, mooi gelegen, vriendelijke gastvrouw, zeker aan te raden!!
