About Charm O'Kelly
We are a family from Devon who have enjoyed camping and caravan holidays in the South Hams with our extended family for a number of years. 9 years ago we rented a lodge on the Salcombe Retreat for an October half term holiday and fell in love with the place. We were lucky enough to be able to buy our own lodge in 2013 and it has already become for us an invaluable escape from our busy family and working life. We would like to share our home with people who will enjoy the peace and quiet as much as we do and treat it as their own 'home from home'.
Charm O'Kelly purchased this Chalet in 2013
Why Charm O'Kelly chose Malborough
We love the peace and quiet of the site within easy access of beaches and the coastal footpath. Great pubs and restaurants nearby. Water sports within easy reach for our boys. Towns of Kingsbridge and Salcombe close enough if needed. Only an hour and 20 minutes from home enabling us to come for a weekend or overnight break. Can join up with family members who camp or caravan at Higher Rew campsite just across the airfield and others who stay at Soar Mill Cove Hotel.
What makes this Chalet unique
The balcony / open plan living areas are ideal for relaxing alone or as a family. Great views over the sea and farmland. Binoculars, local maps, books and games. Wifi and DVD's. Area for disposable BBQ for warmer evenings. Safe area for our daughter to scooter or hang out with friends in the play field where the phone signal is very good! Small shop on site selling local produce and crafts.

Thank you for posting a review. I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay.
A very nice place with some minor issues
Overall, we had a very pleasant stay at number 11. The lodge is well situated and spacey inside. We were mostly impressed with the general cleanliness of the rooms and range of utilities provided, as well as the speed of email responses from the owner, on the run up to, and during the stay. The TV channels available and signal was excellent, as were the provided games, DVDs and books. The bathrooms were clean and had excellent showers. The park location is very pleasant, superbly situated for stunning views across to the sea on a clear day. The walks are also lovely. Access to the larger towns is easy and the convenient CoOp nearby is a short drive away. The park is safe and has a nice green space and play area for children.
However, we experienced some issues and have to consider value for money based on our expenditure, as experienced guests of cottages around the UK. Hence only 3 stars.
The issues we experienced at the lodge were surprising and frustrating, as we had paid summer holiday prices for the week’s stay so we’re expecting a high level of service. Issues included: dirty supplies (e.g. toothpaste holder, crockery and glasses), a dishwasher that did not clean very well, a broken front door lock (very, very hard to unlock for some people), a stiff rear sliding door which we needed to use a lot, and very intermittent WiFi, which, in 2018 either needs to be provided as completely reliable and effective, or made clear about the limitations in the advert. This was very troubling especially as our phone signal (for at least two leading providers) was zero, making researching things to do in the area or dipping into work duties difficult. It kicks you off, then includes an annoying coffee shop style browser splash screen as you try and reconnect.
We did report the door issue very early on and received a prompt reply from the owner. However, the maintenance team on the park did not visit us or resolve the issue in the remaining 4.5 days of our stay, so it was clearly not a priority to them.
Ultimately, it is just unfortunate that the TLC and attention to detail we were expecting from the property was not entirely realised.
Thank you for your review Andy. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay in the area but sorry that some aspects of the lodge did not live up to your expectations. I am particularly sorry that the door did not get sorted during your stay - it does now have a new handle.
A great place to stay if you want to explore that part of devon
The lodge was clean and well kitted out. It was modern and had great facilities. It was peaceful and relaxing and easy to get to places like salcombe, Hope cove, thurlstone and many other bays.
Beautiful sandy beaches all along this part of the coast. Soar Mill Cove is a 10-15 minute walk (downhill). Further beaches at Hope Cove, South Milton, Thurlstone, Bantham and Bigbury all within 9 miles. Salcombe centre 3 miles drive/ Kingsbridge 4 miles. Walking to South Sands/North Sands in Salcombe approx 40 minutes depending on route - via woods/fields or coastal path. Boats from Salcombe across to East Portlemont and Golden Sands.
The use of a car is recommended. Good transport links, with Exeter Airport about an hours drive. Intercity links from London Paddington to Totnes (30 minutes away by car). A38 Devon Express way which links Plymouth and Exeter to M5 is about 30 minutes via county lanes.
There is a small shop on site selling local produce. Malborough is the closest village (1 mile cross-country walk or cycle or 1.5 mile drive) with small supermarket and in-house bakery, petrol station and 2 pubs. Salcombe is 4 miles with a range of boutique style shops, pubs, restaurants and beaches. It has a water sports centre. The market town of Kingsbridge is 20 minute drive and has 2 large supermarkets, shops, pool, restaurants and takeaways. (Online supermarket deliveries available to Salcombe Retreat)
This beautiful area of South Devon offers many land and water based activities. Mackeral fishing; sailing; kayaking; surfing; walking; bird-watching; cycling.
