'Deck 2 Sea' Salcombe Retreat - Holiday Lodge in Soar, Nr Salcombe, South Devon, England - Rural Location, Short walk to the Beach, Extensive Decking, BBQ, Newly Updated in 2014

This contemporary 2 double bedroom luxury holiday lodge is located in a rural setting within the peaceful hamlet of Soar, just a short walk down to the dog friendly (all year round) beach at Soar Mill Cove. There are stunning coastal and country walks from the front door of the lodge and easy access to the South Devon Coast Path and surrounding beaches and towns of the South Hams area of South Devon. The beautiful estuary town of Salcombe is just a 10 minute drive away, with its boutiques, pubs and restaurants. Alternatively it is possible to walk to Salcombe from the lodge - a stunning coastal walk with coffee stops on the way and highly recommended if you are feeling energetic. Hope Cove, South Milton, Bantham and Bigbury are easily accessible by car. The historic naval town of Dartmouth is within easy access. Up to 2 well behaved dogs are welcome at a small extra charge. 2 kayaks available for hire.

About Lindsay Russell

We are a professional couple from Oxford and have been visiting South Devon and the South Hams for over 20 years. In 2010 we decided to rent a lodge in Salcombe Retreat for a weeks holiday, fell in love with the place and ended up buying our own lodge. In 2014 the opportunity came up to buy another lodge - number 32, which we named Deck 2 Sea (the clue's in the title) and so we are now the proud owners of 2 lodges, one we enjoy with family and friends the other we are delighted to share with guests from up and down the UK. Our first year renting out Deck 2 Sea in 2014 went extremely well and having completely redecorated the lodge we were delighted with such fantastic feedback from guests. Looking forward to welcoming new and returning guests in 2015.

Why Lindsay Russell chose South Hams

The location of Deck 2 Sea is second to none! The views from the deck are hard to beat and the sunsets often quite spectacular. Having easy access from the front door to the beach at Soar Mill Cove and coastal walks on the South West coast path, you can't beat the location. If you desire some retail therapy, a visit to a spa, a gorgeous cream tea or a good pint in a local pub are all just a short drive away. As dog owners (we have a Welsh Springer Spaniel) you simply can't beat the surrounding area for tumbling out of bed in the morning and striding across fields to the cliffs or down the lane to the beach. We have some fantastic memories of sunny days spent on the beach with a bottle of wine and BBQ!

What makes this chalet unique

Our lodge offers spectacular, uninterrupted views of the sea and surrounding countryside. The decking area is very large and fully enclosed with a gate and a perfect place to enjoy a BBQ! We own two kayaks and are very happy to make these available to visiting guests for a small charge, perfect for a bimble on the estuary or on the waves. We've even caught mackerel for our tea in the past! There are only a small number of lodges at Salcombe Retreat that have uninterrupted sea views but Deck 2 Sea has one of the best views from the large deck. We welcome up to 2 dogs and there is nothing better than watching your 4 legged friend sniff the air on a summers evening as you watch the sunset with a glass of something chilled!

Notes on accommodation: There is a large children's area on the site with swings, slide and plenty of open space for games, kite flying etc! There is a separate, fenced dog exercise area. Please note: Dogs must be kept on a lead on the site. No smoking is allowed in or immediately around the lodge. Outside: Double doors from the living room open onto a very large deck with outside table and chairs. The deck, probably the largest on the site, has stunning, uninterrupted views across open National Trust Land to the sea. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and bed linen are included. The lodge is cleaned and towels/bedding changed on a weekly basis and prior to the arrival of new guests. Other: There are patio doors opening from the living area onto a large decking area with stunning, uninterrupted views across National Trust land to the sea. The deck is equipped with outside furniture and gas BBQ.

Fantastic accommodation

What a beautiful lodge laid out perfectly with a large living area and doors opening onto the balcony with beautiful views of the sea. The location is perfect we hardly used the car as most of the walks we did were straight from the lodge.

Places of interest for us were Salcombe with stunning views and lots of dog friendly places to eat. Hope cove, Bantham beach and Slapton sands is definitely worth a visit just a short drive from the lodge.

The lodge itself was well maintained and very welcoming. Lindsay was very helpful in providing us with lots of information about the area and interesting things to do, she also made the booking very easy. I would definitely recommend the lodge to friends and hope to visit again sometime in the future.

Amazing Lodge in amazing location

I have just spent the Christmas week at the lodge with my family.

The lodge was very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed - a home from home😊

Lindsay and Adrian made it extra special with some Christmas lights and decorations🎄. The prosecco and chocolates were a nice surprise for us too.

A highy recommended place to stay and perfect rural location for having that peace and quiet but close enough to Salcombe (a favourite of mine) and other lovely areas of South Devon.

Lindsay was a great communicator and was at hand for any questions we had prior to our arrival.

We were extremely lucky with the weather and watched some beautiful sunsets.

I would highly recommend Deck 2 Sea at Salcombe Retreat, it is a lovely place for any age.

Superb lodge in a stunning location

What an amazing holiday at Deck2sea. Our family have really enjoyed our stay the lodge, the views are incredible and it is fully equipped with everything required. The location is perfect for exploring the local areas which are absolutely stunning. Leaflets in the lodge give info for the local shops, restaurants & beaches. Can not recommend enough ☀️⛵️ great communications with the owners.

Great place great week

Nice quiet secure location, lovely little park for the boys to play and space for the dog to run. The lodge was modern beautifully furnished with everything you need. Salcombe retreats are perfectly situated close to all the beaches and to Salcombe which is beautiful and idyllic. Great walks and so much to do. Must also say Lindsay was so helpful and made everything really easy.

Amazing holiday destination!

If you crave stunning sea views from your very own private deck then this amazing holiday destination is the one you're looking for. This luxury five star lodge is a wonderful combination of New England chic and Devon Coastal styling; cream leather sofas and recliners with foot stools and plush fur throws, warm oak flooring and large patio windows which let the light flood into the large

open plan living space. A very well appointed kitchen area, with dishwasher, washing machine, large fridge/freezer and lovely oak dinning table seating four/six very comfortably.

The two generous double bedrooms each have their own stylish en suites; one

with a full sized bath, the other with a power shower. There are very spacious

fitted wardrobes to one bedroom whilst the other comes complete with it's very own dressing room! With all my shoes, bags and holiday clothes, I was in seventh heaven, no shortage of storage space here girls!

Very comfortable beds, lovely fresh bed linen and plenty of soft towels helped to increase our sense of feeling relaxed and at home from the moment we arrived and we were so impressed by the the owners thoughtful attention to detail.

There were maps, recommendations for walks, places to visit and places to eat and drink. We so enjoyed the fact that the South West Coastal Path was right on our doorstep and the information supplied by Lindsay and Adrian meant that we could plan our trips out and about, seeing places we had never visited before, although we thought we knew this area well.

We would thoroughly recommend this lovely property to family and friends; it really does deliver everything you could possible want by way of luxury accommodation and it's position is just stunning; huge blue Devon skies, the sparkling sea, bird song and peace and quiet in your own little piece of heaven.

Thank you so very much Lindsay and Adrian for giving us such a wonderful holiday experience, we shall certainly be booking with you again!

A wonderfully relaxing get away

What a truly wonderful place this is! We enjoyed a relaxing 5 days here and have come away feeling very refreshed. The lodge is clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The views from the deck are unbeatable and can be enjoyed with a glass of something chilled! There are lots of lovely walks, beautiful beaches to explore and plenty of yummy places to eat in and around Salcombe - we particularly enjoyed the Oyster Shack and the Winking Prawn. We went with our 9 month old son and our dog and both had a wonderful time - our little dog was in heaven! The whole area is very dog friendly, the Victoria Inn in Salcome even has an A La Bark menu for dogs and a doggy beer! The owners are lovely and communication has been great from start to finish making the whole process stress free. We will definitely be returning, I can't recommend this place enough!

10/15 minute walk to the beach and rock-pools at Soar Mill Cove, which is dog friendly all year round. Other beaches around the South Hams are all within a short drive, including North Sands, South Sands, Bantham, Bigbury, Hope Cove, Slapton, Blackpool Sands.


There are good transport links, with Exeter Airport about an hour away, Intercity train links from London Paddington to Totnes (about 30 mins away by car). The A38 Devon Express way which links Plymouth and Exeter to the M5 is approximately 30 mins away via country lanes.


Malborough, the closest village with a supermarket, is 1.5 miles by car or a 1 mile cross country walk. Salcombe is 4 miles away and has a range of boutique shops, pubs and restaurants. Kingsbridge is 5 miles away and has an excellent range of local shops, supermarkets, pubs and restaurants.

Further Details:

This beautiful part of South Devon is perfect for activities on land and on the water. There are regular sailing activities from Salcombe during peak season - Mackeral fishing is a favourite. Visitors can hire kayaks or learn to surf on the beach at Bantham. The lodge is located in an area where there is an abundance of wildlife. Guests keen on wildlife will regularly see buzzards, kestrels, peregrine falcons, buntings, yellow hammers, skylarks, the rare but locally common cirl bunting, red deer and hares - often from the lodge itself. Occasionally you might also see gannets along the coast.

Although Salcombe Retreat does have free wifi please remember that this is a rural area and therefore the wifi is generally only suitable for accessing emails and the internet and the signal can be temperamental.

2 kayaks are available for rent at a small additional charge for guests staying in the lodge. Life jackets and all necessary equipment provided. Guests wishing to rent the kayaks will need to have a roof rack in order to transport the kayaks. Please enquire about availability at the time of booking.

Cycles can also be hired locally.
