THE HEART OF ENGLAND / PEAK DISTRICT / DERBYSHIRE REGION...The scenery around Matlock is magnificent. Originally a hamlet with one of only a few crossing points along the length of the River Derwent which carves its way through a ridge of limestone just south of Matlock in order to reach the lower ground to the South. This part of the valley is spectacular, steep-sided, winding and wooded, with high cliffs such as High Tor towering above attracting many rock-climbers, walkers, fishermen and bird-watchers. Some of this dale is a National Nature Reserve representing some of the best examples of wildlife habitat and geology in the White Peak area of Derbyshire being renowned for its range of rare flowers, otters and buzzards. The area is perfect to explore on foot or cycle. The Peak District is a walker's paradise. We are extremely fortunate to live in one of the many beautiful parts and within a stones throw are stunning walks by the river.
All within an easy drive are Matlock Bath, Chatsworth Stately Home, Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Youlgreave, Spa town of Buxton and the whole of The Peak District National Park on your doorstep.
I'm a born and bred northern lass born in Sheffield, unfortunately a fair few years ago now! I moved to London in my late 20s and stayed there for quite a few years, studying interior design and working on Bond Street as a stylist. This gave me the chance to meet rather a lot of famous people!
I moved closer to home in 2001, relocating to Derbyshire and I have lived here in this stunning region ever since.
I somewhat fell into renting my properties for holiday makers nearly 10 years ago now and I love it! Starting with no experience and no guidance it has been a real journey. Of course, working on the most prestigious and famous street in the UK, when I was at the top of my game within sales, I certainly know how to sell a break but the most important thing that I have learnt over the years since becoming a Holiday Home owner is ensuring that my guests have the most wonderful break. I love making people feel welcome and special and I think I’m on the right track! The comments I read from the guests who have stayed are simply heart-warming and it makes all the hard work and worry of being responsible for someone’s hard earnt break worthwhile!
Hopefully I will see you soon!
P.s no refunds mind for bad weather :)
Debbie Brown purchased this house in 2004
Built high on the north side of the Derwent Valley and with magnificant south facing views of Matlock Town and beyound, this is a very special Victorian building with a truly wonderful and unique feel to it; it feels so calm and peaceful. There’s an interesting little story to go with it too!
A local man, back in the Victorian era called John Smedley was on honeymoon in Switzerland when he became seriously ill and returned to England to recuperate at a hydropathic establishment in Yorkshire, and later to take the waters at Cheltenham. From then on, hydropathy was the greatest interest in Smedley's life. When local thermal springs were discovered John Smedley was the first to recognise and exploit the effects of water treatment on various illnesses and Matlock soon developed as a spa town. People began to flock to the town in seek of treatment and eventually twenty four Hydro Hotels were built to accommodate. These hotels offered guests a variety of hydrotherapy treatments using the local spring water and this building was one of those hotels!
Originally this beautiful stone built house was one of 24 Hydro Hotels built around Matlock in the Victorian era offering hydrotherapy treatments using the local spring waters. It was converted into 4 apartments after the 2nd world war but the building still looks like a large stone built house. It's a peaceful building situated in a sleepy residential area and Little Larsas Retreat is on ground level and benefits from a terrace where you can sit outside and enjoy those magnificent views. Being on one level it's great as there are no stairs too! The original detailed cornice and ceiling roses still remain, as do all the large sash windows. The lounge includes not only an east facing window but a large south facing bay window too. The room floods with light and it’s wonderful to just sit and gaze out at the valley across.
Every home comfort supplied with local and care. Very comfortable accommodation. Well placed to get to know the Peak District. Added bonus is a proper pub just round the corner serving real ale and good food.
We stayed at this property recently and we were very impressed overall. Our emails were responded too quickly (very annoying when you have to wait hours!) and booking was straight forward and hassle free. The accommodation is beautiful, spotless and well maintained. We were drawn to this property at it didn’t look like a typical holiday let and we weren’t disappointed, it felt like a well-loved home. The area is great for visiting attractions and you can pick up walks practically from the door. There is a selection of restaurants in Matlock and we would particularly recommend Maazi (Indian).
We recently just got married and wanted a short mini moon break with our children before they head back to school. This was a last minute booking and got such a amazing deal for such a beautiful location. We had good communication with the owner and when we arrived at the property, we were greeted with played jazz music and a table set up with tea, jam & cream scones. As well as that we also got a card welcoming us to our stay. The property is beautifully furnished and smells nice :) We were not far from town but would advise to drive if you have children rather than walk, unless your children are much older.
I would absolutely recommend this property and hopefully will come back at the near future
We've stayed in many holiday lets but this has to be up there with one of the best we have stayed in. Beautifully decorated throughout and spotless. Our welcome was just perfect; tea and homemade scones, fresh flowers, music playing! Debbie the owner couldn't do enough for us, even before our arrival she helped me to organise a surprise my husbands birthday. It's a great location for visiting lots of attractions and we both love walking so took a walk over Stanage Edge which was breath taking. There are lots of folders for you to look through on "things to do", "where to eat" etc. and walking books to borrow. We also had a super meal at Stones in Matlock (though book in advance). Overall our break couldn't be faulted.
Just got back from staying at Little Lhasa's Retreat. Perfection. Beautiful viewy from Solarium and balcony. Cottage beautifully decorated and spacious. Lovely home to come home to after venturing out to beautiful countryside each day. Would recommend to anyone! Immaculately clean and tea and dessert await you on arrival.
This delightful flat in Matlock was perfect for our weekend break. It was airy and bright, very modern, but retained the charm of the era in which it was built.
We booked on the very last minute and had a problem with the directions (corrupted file) which is why I had to say the directions were poor, but once we were able to view them they were fine.
Other than that, the property itself was bright and clean and excellently maintained, the location was perfect for the activities we had planned for the weekend and next time we go back to the area we will certainly be hoping that this property is available to rent.
