The property is in a building with only two apartments inside and the upstairs apartment is lived in by our nephew and his wife, who will also give you the keys when you arrive ,and would be available to help in the event of any emergency. The apartment is situated on the first floor and there is a private balcony accessed via French doors running along the length of the front of the house. On the ground floor there is a large shared terrace where it is possible to have lunch or dinner alfresco or just relax and take the sun.The apartment has fantastic mountain views. The Spa town of San Pelligrino famous the world over for its water is only 5km away and possible to reach on foot or bike along a scenic walkway. Bergamo with its beautiful Cite Alta is approx 25 km. Local speciality Tallegio cheese is produced at the nearby village of the same name. The beautiful lake of Como with the pretty towns of Lecco and Bellagio are less than an hours drive. There are hourly buses from San Giovanni to Bergamo city which takes about 45 mins. However to really appreciate the the surrounding area including the lakes of Como and Isea access to a car would be a bonus. Milan Bergamo is one of Ryanairs main bases in Itay and there are flights from several British and European airports which is about a 45 min drive away. From Bergamo there are road and rail connections to Milan and all over Italy. Come and explore this beautiful region with its mountains access to Bergamo and delicious locally produced food and wine and I am sure you will come again.

Absolutely Brilliant

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was even better than we expected from the description. Clean, tidy and vey spacious and the views over the village and down the valley were to die for when sat enjoying a coffee first thing in the morning. The drive up the Valle Brembano and over the San Marco pass towards the northern end of Lake Como was a must. Then to drive down the lake shore stopping off at the various villages along the way. Our first trip to Lombardy but hopefully will not be the last.

Altogether a lovely area and we especially enjoyed the "smaller" Lake Iseo.

Pleasantly situated property

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely property in a quiet village. Large bedrooms and balconies which give great views of the valley and mountains. I would say a car is essential in this area of Italy. The village has one trattoria which is excellent value for money and serves superb Italian food. The owners are very welcoming and despite having limited English actually bothered to have the menu translated for us. Our second stay here

Great place in mountains above Bergamo!

  • 4 of 5

Highly recommend a stay in this flat in the little village Roncaglio Entro only 1.7K north of San Giovanni Bianco which has a delightful church, two supermarkets and some characterful eateries and little shops.

Price? Great value for time in such a spectacular landscape which stimulates all your senses.

The flat is a great base for hiking, cycling or driving in the local valleys or over the local mountains where there are some amazing alpine views from picturesque villages.

Scenic views up the valley from the flat itself are great (watching eagles soar in the valley above from the balcony was a highlight on my trip). Listening to sheep bells echo up the valley was another sensory delight as was the clean air!

The locale is very accessible - good bus links if you don't drive - to Bergamo or Milan. If you do drive, there are spectacular drives eastwards over the mountains to picturesque Clusone (good market Mondays with great local meats and cheeses). Another great drive is westwards to Lecco or further north to Verenna gets you boats onto Lake Lecco/Como for ferries to the delightfully special town of Bellagio on Lake Como - quickest route if you don't want to spend hours on a boat, is to drive northwest over the mountains to Verenna and take a swift foot ferry from there to Bellagio. Well worth the trip for extraordinary scenery including mountains and the famous lake of Como.

Sunday warning! Like many European areas, Sunday morning/afternoon is a day for 1000s of cyclists and motorbikes to be on the roads - in this area they travel northwards up the valley - even though the riders are well stewarded at major junctions it may be best to avoid any drive north up the valley on Sunday before 16.00.

Like spas? This flat is a short 5K walk (on a safe walking path - paved former railway line) to the amazing QCTerme in San Pellegrino - famous for its healing waters - one of the best spas I've ever encountered!

Beautiful apartment

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful, extremely spacious, clean and luxurious apartment. The views are absolutely stunning. It is very quiet and peaceful with excellent walking all around. The little restaurant up the road does great food at very reasonable prices. The Village has everything that one needs. We were a middle aged couple with 2 small dogs who enjoy walking and it was perfect for us.

Great place to unwind and recharge body and soul

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful property in a majestic location, heart of the Bremba Valley. Spotless, superbly maintained and very very well equipped. With three bedrooms, separate living and kitchen area, generous sized bathroom. It was the first time we didn't feel 'squeezed in' on a holiday.

The owner Alastair, couldn't have been more helpful on the phone, leaving us plenty information and maps, e mailing us very helpful directions, tips, places to see, etc.

If you like walking, if you don't like busy tourist geared places, if you have a bit of Italian or want to try it, if you want the real local people, gentle and smiling and helpful, this is the place to go. Also, the bus service is excellent, and the walk into San Giovanni, only 20 mins, means you get the exercise, keep your costs low, as the bus is cheap; and can explore San Pelligrino, very very impressive), and not be all day on a bus. San Pelligrino is only a few KM away, and Bergamo, an absolutely wonderful city, that is so easy get around, only 40 mins. There are other places worth exploring too, if you have the time.

Our holiday combined Bergamo and Roncaglio Centro/San Giovanni, so we got the mountains and the city.

Our teen kids were disappointed there was no wi fi. We weren't as we were able to wean them of their smart phones and actually have decent conversations with each other. Also there is a good swimming pool in San Pelegrino.

If you want a quite get away, in a beautiful non touristy part of Lower Alpine Italy, and still have decent supermarkets and restaurants, where you can manage without a car, with good bus links to Bergamo, (There are hardly any taxis), this is the place, this is the place for you.

If you have kids who only want to be in 'fun' water parks, theme parks, etc, and or on their devices with wifi, this is not the place to go. That said, my wife and I hope to return, and even the kids, at the end of the day, will remember a holiday where we were actually a family and weren't glued to technology, social media, or ripped off with fees to over packed them parks, entertainment venues' or whatever.

Also, beautiful Catholic Church in San Giovanni, indeed many wonderful churches with amazing frescoes in Bergamo and the region in general. Easy to get Mass and get a place of quiet time away from the madding crowd!

Our thanks to Alastair for a great break for body and soul.
