Barn in La Gondie, Saint-Martial-d'Albarède, Dordogne, Aquitaine, France - Very Peaceful Location, But Only 4 Km's To The Nearest Town
'Le Tilleuil' is a recently converted detached stone barn in an outstanding hilltop location with beautiful views.
For those who would like to get away from the hustle and bustle, whilst still being within easy access of many towns and villages. The owners live next door and are on hand for local information. The property has direct access to a fully fenced 6m x 12m swimming pool, which you are welcome to share with our family of four, or have exclusive use if you prefer. There is a large private garden, and access to our 11ha's of meadow and woodland, including direct access to 100's of km's of woodland trails and vast array of wildlife, including badgers, deer, kite and hoopoes. Top quality Mountain bikes, Touring bikes and Kids bikes are available for guests by arrangement (we also run a cycle hire company). Locally, Excideuil and Tourtoirac (4km's) offer great cuisine, whilst the larger towns of Hautefort, Thiviers, Perigueux, Brantome and Montignac are all under thirty minutes drive.

Lovely place to stay and excellent hosts
We had a lovely 2 weeks in this lovely barn conversion. Set on the edge of a forested area with good walking paths and cycling tracks. Great swimming pool and deck area overlooking the fields - red deer coming right up to the fence and badger sets in the next field. A pine marten invasion made for acouple of incredibly noisy nights but dealt with so effficiently by Mike and his high frequency noise! Close (5k) to Exeduil and the little village of Tourtoirac - great caves. Would thoroughly recommend - Anna was waiting with food and wine for us when we arrived very late and very tired on a drizzly cold evening but the sun came out and we had a super holiday.
Hi Guys. The trials and tribulations of countryside living (and now we now how to get rid of pine martens in the loft!) Thanks so much for your lovely review. We so enjoyed meeting you all - do come and see us again if you are ever in the area.

A wonderful peaceful stay
We spent a wonderful week here this August and my only complaint was that I wish I had booked for longer! Anna and Mike, are the perfect hosts, on hand for those who want it to give information about the local area, recommendations for sight seeing and places to visit. The gite is lovely, it had everything we needed as a family of four to make our stay feel "home from home". Anna has provided a folder in the gite with lots of local information and things to do from main tourist attractions to some less known gems, she also emailed this to me in advance so we could start to plan our trip. I would happily recommend this gite and hope that we can return one day to stay again.
Perfect barn with better than perfect owners!
from the first contact by mail to the last goodbye, Anna and Mike have been perfect. The accommodation is simply stunning and spotlessly clean with three good sized bedrooms, two with beautiful views over the countryside. The living area is comfortable and really versatile for any groups' needs. Finally, the pool and outdoor space tops off a great place to eat, chill and have fun. Anna and Mike live next door with their two lovely children Daisy and Millie and they could not have been more helpful and welcoming. They advised us on chateaux, markets, caves and loads of things to see. They helped with canoe hire, cycle hire and even a trip to the doctors when our French let us down. I cannot think of a single thing which would have improved our stay! Definitely take the time to take A walk from the barn, lovely little trails in the woods. I would recommend this barn to anyone who wants peace and quiet, a place to have fun or as a base to explore a quiet and beautiful region, even in the height of summer. I do not think you will find a better place to stay in the whole area....Thanks again Mike, Anna, Daisy and Millie for a Perfect holiday and letting us share your special home.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this lovely review! (especially the bit about the more than perfect owners!) We loved having you all and we are really happy that you enjoyed your holiday at Le Tilleul!
Anna and Mike
I had the pleasure of staying at Le Tilleuil with my wife and daughter for 2 weeks in July/August 2015. As an avid birdwatcher and amateur naturalist, I had picked this property because it looked clean, modern, and well equipped, and for its rural location with its 10 acres of adjacent meadows with access to adjoining woodland. I was not disappointed on either count, and as a regular visitor to France, Le Tilleuil ranks among the best gites I have stayed in.
The facilities were good and were more than adequate for our needs--- even including English Freeview for those wanting to keep in touch with their favourite programmes. The bathroom and wet-room were excellent; the kitchen was well equipped; the open-plan living room was comfortable; and the decking area was excellent for basking in the sun, wildlife watching, or enjoying drinks on the dark, silent nights.
For my wife and daughter, the large pool was the highlight and they enjoyed its use at least two or three times daily irrespective of the weather. It was just the job for cooling down on the hot August days we enjoyed here. For me , the highlight was the wildlife , but particularly the profusion of butterflies in the meadows, many absent from or rare in the UK.
The hosts Anna and Mike were unobtrusively friendly, attentive and helpful, a definite plus for visitors who prefer to have assistance on hand if required. Their charming daughters, being explorers, were interested in all the moths, butterflies and creepy-crawlies that I could show them. A rare plus for me.
Although rural in nature, the gite is literally only 5 mins. from a large supermarket on the outskirts of Excideuil. Excideuil we found to be a quiet, charming little town with a good variety of shops and cafes, a weekly market, and a fine restaurant. It has a 12c castle, and good walks alongside the River Loue. If not wishing to travel around, there is enough locally to keep one interested. Further afield there are plenty of lovely villages, towns and chateaux to explore, and Le Tilleuil is an excellent base for exploring this northern part of the Dordogne.
I have no hesitation in recommending this property to prospective visitors.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this detailed and wonderful review! We so enjoyed having you, and the girls were thrilled to see at close hand some of the beautiful moths you were able to name for them! We are working on a photo collage thanks to your amazing photography which will be displayed in the gite so that all our other guests can enjoy your work too! Our very best wishes to you all, and sincere thanks for the review! Anna, Mike Daisy and Millie
So good we've visited twice
This was our second stay with Mike, Anna and the girls ( we've already booked for next year ) and we loved our holiday even more .
The gite is lovely and knowing the area slightly from our previous visit we were more adventurous in getting to know the surrounding towns and villages.
We were a party of six ranging from a very energetic eight year old through to two fifty something's and there was something for everyone.
The pool is immaculately maintained and the gite is a perfect place to relax or a base for exploring the local countryside either on foot or mountain bike.
Mike and Anna are the perfect hosts and are there if you need advice or suggestions on local villages ,events or restaurants.
We cannot reccomend the gite highly enough .The interior is very comfortable and spacious and the exterior with the pool and access to the meadows and woods a joy. A myriad of wild life ,wild flowers and at night star gazing on the sunbeds with only the occasional bat for company .Idyllic !
We can't wait for next year !
aaaah! thank you so much guys! we were so happy to have you back this year, and honoured that you are coming back to stay with us again next year! can't wait to see you all again, and we promise a 5 star welcome pack with some fizz this year to celebrate! love to you all xxx
Absolutely stunning property in perfect location
We had an absolutely wonderful holiday here and have already booked to go back next year! The property is sympathically restored with lovely attention to detail. There is everything you could possibly need. It is set in a very peaceful and beautiful location yet with plenty to do on your doorstep. Anna, Mike and the girls are perfect hosts and were always on hand to assist or recommend but in a quietly, unobtrusive way. Their local knowledge enhance our holiday and our children said it was 'the best holiday ever!' Which we totally agree with. We are already counting down the weeks until our next visit.
Thank you so much for the simply beautiful review! We sooo loved having you all, and can't wait to see you all again next year! Do keep in touch over the year - we love hearing from you, and the girls would live to know you the children are gettting on! see you in July next year!!
