About Dr. Ian Jowett

We are a family of 4, my wife and 2 boys work and go to school locally. The cottage is their home during term time, apart from the summer term.

Dr. Ian Jowett purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Dr. Ian Jowett chose Giggleswick

We bought Lychgate cottage in September 2013 as a second home. My wife works locally and our children go to the school near by. We wanted to create a home from home environment for term time and to save on a 2 hour daily commute. We've managed to achieve this by carefully decorating and refurbishing. Our cottage is only available during school holidays apart from the summer term.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is great! Local pub just 20 yards away (literally within crawling distance) serving good food and great beers! Walking the dog is a a pleasure, lots of routes with great views of the surrounding hills and the River Ribble, starting from the front door. Settle with it's shops, Booths supermarket and weekly market offer great convenience in a friendly environment.

Beautiful good sized cottage and excellent location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this traditional yet modern cottage. It was clean and beautifully presented with everything we needed. Our kids loved the quirkiness of the bedrooms. The weather was really warm when we were there but downstairs stayed really cool. I expect that’s due to the very thick old walls. Dogs are to be kept in the kitchen but a handy stair gate is provided to keep pooch downstairs. The village has a park and playing fields just a couple of minutes walk away and Settle is easily reached on foot. Lots of dog friendly pubs nearby. Great location for exploring the Dales. I would certainly recommend this to couples and families.

A very relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

We’ve just spent a week walking many trails in the area and were pleased to have this lovely cottage as our base. A charming 17th century cottage but with all the modern amenities. Set in a quiet village, with a good pub behind, but only minutes walk into Settle. We would definitely want to stay here again if we were in the area.

Rain? Who cares?

  • 5 of 5

Lychgate Cottage is a delight. Quirky but very comfortable, it feels like a home for living in, not a rental cottage. Giggleswick and Settle are the friendliest of places, while the walks along the Ribble or up Castleberg are really satisfying, and as strenuous as you - or for us, our border collie - want them to be.The Settle-Carlisle railway extends these possibilities without resort to the car. We hope to return. Remember that few people visit the Yorkshire Dales for the weather, but the heavy rain at the start of our visit made the river, and the surrounding waterfalls spectacular.

Great family hilday

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay in this wonderful cottage. Perfect for our family of 2 active boys (and dog). The cottage is superbly equipped and so homely we relaxed straight away. Friendly pub, literally a stones' throw with real ales and good pub grub. Sweet little tuck shop over the road which the boys loved and just a short stroll into Settle itself which has all you would want; supermarkets, individual shops and pubs. There are great walks from Settle and nearby Malham; Ingleton and Clapham. Thanks again Ian and Carole - no doubt we will be back for a 3rd visit in the future.

Perfect for a quiet walking holiday

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I plus our dog stayed in this lovely cottage in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales for a week in August.

We were wanting a place that provided a central base for us to walk each day and return to a relaxing home with good restaurants on our doorstep..Lychgate Cottage provided this and more!

Ian and Carole were excellent in their communication both before and during our stay. The cottage was spotlessly clean on our arrival and with two double rooms and a smaller single room we had lots of space for the two of us.

The cottage is located in the middle of Giggleswick which is a 10 - 15 minute walk into Settle. The village is beautiful and really quiet but with two pubs that provide standard pub food and a small shop just a couple of steps away from the cottage which is ideal for milk and sweets!

The cottage is so well equipped and has all the extras you don't always find in holiday rentals (washing up liquid, laundry powder, oils, herbs & spices). The kitchen has lots of utensils so cooking at home is very easy.

The cottage is ideal if you have a dog and the area is so well catered for dogs we could take ours into most cafes and pubs (Naked Man excepted which was a surprise)

There are so many beautiful walks right on your doorstep or further a field if you wish to drive - we will definitely return to explore the area further.

Thank you Ian and Carole for opening up your lovely cottage for us to use - we had a perfect relaxing break.
