We are a family with three growing children.

In hunting for a home of our own, we decided to look for a house with outbuildings or a second home nearby. When we found "Den Ouden Speelberg", my long-held dream of opening a B&B became a holiday home. We spent 2010 to 2012 renovating the property and in 2013 we were finally able to welcome our first guests. We always do our utmost to offer visitors a wonderful experience. Would you like information on points of interest in the region, or local insider tips? We would be happy to inform you as accurately as we can. Would you prefer to be given the privacy to discover things for yourself? We can certainly respect that as well.

PETRA DE SMET purchased this house in 2002

Why PETRA DE SMET chose Belgium

The location of the holiday home makes it well suited for visits to commemorate World War I. The In Flanders Fields Museum in Ieper (Ypres), the site of the Christmas Truce in Ploegsteert, the Bayernwald Trenches in Wijtschate, the Mine Crater Memorial in Mesen, the commando bunker in Kemmel, Hill 62, the many cemeteries and notably Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passendale, the Tower of Peace in Mesen, Talbot House in Poperinge... So many familiar names from the history books. And well worth a visit!

What makes this house unique

We renovated the house itself with loving care, creating the kind of holiday home that we would want to rent for ourselves: not cluttered with bric-a-brac, just discreet luxury, with a place to sit outside no matter what the weather, privacy and plenty of breathing space.

We may be a little biased, but we think our holiday home is something special: for the house itself as well as its location.

Will we soon have the pleasure of welcoming you to "Den Ouden Speelberg"? We certainly hope so!

Kind regards,

Bart & Petra

Modern, Clean & Perfect location for exploring WW1 History

  • 5 of 5

My Family and I greatly enjoyed our 4 nights in this modern, clean and welcoming holiday home, located literally a few metres inside Belgium, overlooking the French border. The location was perfect for exploring all of the WW1 battlefields, museums, monuments as well as Ypres being just a 20 minute car journey away. The 10 minute car journey back into France for the nearest large supermarkets also made life easy to purchase food to cook back at the house. The main living area was spacious, so too was the very large shower / utility room. Both bedrooms were equipped with a double bed and full size bunk beds (suitable for adults if required!). I would say the only facility missing from the property was the lack of TV / DVD player. It would have been nice to be able to "wind down" after a busy day exploring by watching a film etc. Petra speaks/writes excellent English and was extremely helpful both before and during the stay. I would thoroughly recommend this property to any family or small group looking to explore the Flanders region and will definitely look to hire this property again for a future trip to the area. Thank you Petra.

Perfect - we will be back

  • 5 of 5

We loved it. We were doing a family history trip and it's a perfect location literally on the boarder on France and Belgium and perfect for Ypres and the WW1 trenches. The traveling distance to Ypres is only 20 minutes away, Bruges and Ghent is 1hr 15 away. The house was perfect for our needs. It was warm and clean. The beds are comfy, plenty of information regarding the surrounding area in various languages. The owners are really friendly and welcoming. We will be back and will be certainly be recommending it to our friends and family. If we could change one thing about the house and it would be to have a conventional oven. The oven that is at the house is a microwave / grill oven. It's a small point which didn't effect us as there are plenty of restaurants around and we ate out every night. But otherwise PERFECT

Family holiday visiting Ypres and surrounding area

  • 4 of 5

We spent the week visiting Ypres and the surrounding area. Property was in a rural location but was ideally situated for everything that we wanted to see and do. Property was charming and rustic, very clean and owner was very helpful.

Another great visit

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from our second visit in twelve months to this lovely house, and again had a great time.Very pleasant location and close to lots of WW1 history. We would recommend a visit to Hill 62 and the Menin Gate Ceremony which takes place every night at 8pm. House is owned by a lovely couple (Petra and Bart) who made us very welcome (again) .Les/Myra

Beautiful farm cottage in Flanders

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at Petra's lovely cottage for it's central location while also being more secluded and away from any of the larger cities. Petra was there to greet us and showed us around the house, which is beautifully restored. It has the charm of an older cottage with the conveniences of modern upgrades. There certainly is a lot to see in the immediate area (Ypres, WWI sites, Poperinge). The place is also well situated for short drives to other well known locations. During our stay, we took day trips out to Ghent and Bruges, which are both must-see place when exploring Belgium. For the Belgian beer enthusiast, this is also a great location to explore some of the more well known breweries in Flanders, including the St. Sixtus Abby in Westvleteren, which is only a 20 minute drive away. We absolutely enjoyed our stay there and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in a quiet place that is also close to the motorway and interesting attractions.

Perfect Cottage in an ideal location

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family chose this cottage for its location as we wanted to visit various cities and Christmas markets in France and Belgium and it was ideal. Pretty close to the motorway, quiet location and very well kept property. The owner was ready waiting for us when we arrived and showed us around, it felt as though, if we had needed anything all we had to do was ask. My kids loved feeding the chickens that are next door and we will be coming back here in the summer to explore the trenches and ww1 history around the area. Worth every penny
